There is A LOT of symbolism and stuff to react to and dissect. Please. please This is a series of 39 episodes and there is an additional movie called Adolescence of Utena that is a sort of alternate retelling of the story with a different ending too!!! It's like legitimately queer. two women fall in love with one another. It will bring you to the highest highs and lowest lows. It’s so good. even if you don’t react to it, you should still watch it. -optional reading- If I had one wish, it would be to experience this piece of media for the first time again. It’s one of those experiences that changes you, enriches your understanding of yourself. It gives you a new outlook on the effects your past has had on the current you. It instills in you a curiosity for the motivations of others, as well as strong, justified sense of compassion, for yourself, for others. Not the kind you get because it’s what good people should have, a lesson taught by external forces, but the kind that naturally springs forth from the purest part of your human experience. Complimentary, it instills a specific breed of contempt, for yourself, for others. A kind that you don’t feel guilt over, because you understand what exactly it is and why exactly it is and how exactly it has affected other things that are. The kind that helps you grow as a person, and helps clarify your relationship with reality, not distort it. I am perhaps exaggerating a tad. I do love writing and tend to get carried away. There is a specific play on words that, after finishing the show, was a genuinely unironic “Real eyes realize real lies” moment -end of optional reading- I cannot promise it will have the same effect on you, a man who experiences heterosexuality, as it had on me, a homosexual women, but I would be curious to explore how you interact with it. It’s a win-win, you get to experience Revolutionary Girl Utena, and I get to vicariously experience Revolutionary Girl Utena for the first time through you. Also if you do end up reacting to this, the sub is infinitely better than the dub. They tried I assume, but it’s just kind of bland and lacking the emotions and weight of the sub. IMPORTANT trigger warnings: while it is surrealist and hilarious. It does engage in some darker themes regarding compulsory heterosexuality, misogyny, manipulation, coercion, and assault in a few particular episodes. But, in my opinion, it does so very respectfully, in a way that is necessary for the plot and character arcs, with great nuance, and is not explicit or gratuitous. One could very well miss that it happens while watching that scene. The misogyny is very explicit, as is toxic masculinity, however. It is surrealist and light hearted for the most part. KILLER soundtrack don’t even get me started. this was a stream of consciousness and i will not be proofreading. Thank you for your time and consideration. I am sorry if this comes across as annoying or bothersome in any way, I mean no disrespect. I am just passionate about this anime and will jump at the chance to get people to watch it.
