Playphrase.me — 2025 Year in Review 🚀
2025 was a big year for Playphrase.me. I made a lot of improvements to the website, added new tools, and expanded the database with more content — all with one main goal: help you learn English faster by hearing real phrases in real scenes.
Here’s a quick overview of what was added and improved over the year.
✅ New features & improvements (2025)
1) Contexts — see the full dialogue, not just one line
Sometimes a phrase makes perfect sense only when you see what came right before it.
In 2025, I added Contexts, a new way to explore results with a timeline that shows 10 lines before and 10 lines after the phrase. This makes it much easier to understand tone, intention, and the flow of the conversation.
2) Focus / Crop Playback — hear exactly what you searched for
One of the most practical improvements this year was Focus (Crop Playback).
Now Playphrase.me can automatically play only the exact word or phrase you searched for, instead of the whole scene.
It saves time and makes repetition practice much smoother — especially when you want to replay something quickly 10–20 times.
3) Video Mixer (Web) — create “karaoke-style” videos
I also launched a new tool: Playphrase.me Video Mixer.
It lets you generate simple “karaoke-style” videos directly on the website — no scripts, no editing software, no complicated setup. Just pick your phrases and build a video you can use for learning, sharing, or content creation.
4) Smarter Search — better results + advanced query operators
Search got both more forgiving and more powerful.
In 2025, I improved Playphrase.me search so it can suggest better results even when the query isn’t perfectly typed — fewer dead ends and faster discovery.
On top of that, I added a simple way to search for phrases that contain specific combinations of words:
Use * as an AND operator
Example: give * up → results that contain both words (“give” and “up”)Use | as an OR operator
Example: maybe | perhaps → results that contain either word
This makes it much easier to find the exact type of phrase you want — especially when you remember only part of it.
5) Actor Search — phrases spoken by specific actors
A popular new feature: Actor Search.
Now you can pick an actor and explore phrases they say across movies and shows. This adds a fun “character-based” way to learn — and it’s also great for people who prefer specific voices or speaking styles.
6) Common Phrases 2.0 — fully rebuilt
The Common Phrases section was rebuilt from the ground up.
The new version brings a cleaner system for discovering useful everyday phrases and idioms — so you can focus on what’s actually common in real English, not just random single lines.
7) Vocabulary tab — words by level (A1–C2) with real video examples
Another big addition: the Vocabulary section.
It organizes words by difficulty level (A1–C2) and turns them into something truly practical: each word is connected to real spoken examples, and you can click to instantly see and hear it used in context.
📈 Content growth
Besides features, the database itself grew significantly.
Over 2025, I added around +1 million new English phrases — meaning more coverage, more variety, more natural examples, and better chances to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Use * as an AND operator Example: give * up → results that contain both words (“give” and “up”) Use | as an OR operator Example: maybe | perhaps → results that contain either word... I think you should display the tricks on the site, because I didn't know it if I didn't come cross this post.
