Dark Dice Production Updates: Worldbuilding, New Gods, & A New Class
Greetings Adventurers!
First, a quick update to say THANK YOU now that our first RPG Adventure - Domain of the Nameless God - is now a GOLD best seller on the DM's Guild! It's currently on sale as part of an amazing Great Old Ones bundle, so if you pick it up soon you'll get an extra $50 in supernaturally creepy eldritch adventures!
Also for those of you who enjoy pen & paper adventures, we'll be sharing a new class here on Patreon in the next month for your playtesting pleasure in the form of our first ever D&D5e class: The True Necromancer. More info once we release it here for playtesting, however please know that your feedback will directly influence the changes we make to balance and modify the class before it goes to the public. You'll also be credited as a playtester if you send us feedback.
Dark Dice has officially turned two years old, and lot has happened this year in the Actual Play podcast space in that time. Personally, we have grown tremendously thanks to your help (word of mouth from you and your friends), and that growth has allowed us to adapt and evolve our craft over the course of this adventure. The first episode had original hurdy gurdy & accordion, episode 9 featured a choir, and episode 14 will feature a full blown orchestra. We could not reach these new heights without your support and we'll be sharing more behind-the-scenes music things soon! As we at Fool and Scholar Productions continue to grow each of our worlds, we look at limitations for that growth. If we were approached with a serious offer by someone who wanted to theoretically turn Dark Dice into a book, game, or film, what barriers would be in our way? So in the interest of futureproofing our brand we're making a number of tweaks behind the scenes. By our next Dark Dice story, we'll have made the necessary changes to have a fully original world (though we're still going to be playing D&D5e).
But what does that really mean? Well, in specific terms this means that certain species cannot be namedropped due to Trademarks (Dragonborn, Mind Flayers, Tieflings), which is easy enough because we rarely namedrop species or monster names. It also means that we're going to be more clear that our world is not set within the Forgotten Realms, but rather one that Travis created in the 90's, and has been GM'ing ever since, a world in which humanity is not the apex predator. It also means that after season 1 we will no longer reference D&D deities (Pelor, Lolth, Ilmater), instead opting to expand and flesh out our own mythos with the aid of James Lengritch (who co-authored the Liberty deities) and Kaitlin Statz. You've already caught glimpse of key figures like The Allshadow, Ferati, The Unborn, and The Nameless God. Now you'll get to know a bit more about the extended pantheon.
Similarly to the Liberty gods in Meger's notes, we plan to introduce a new deity here each month for Patrons at the Researcher level starting in October.
Ultimately, our stories will still focus on individuals in the dark corners of the world, but these adjustments will allow us to pursue potential opportunities in the coming years. Thank you again for your support! We look forward to sharing more with you soon on all fronts!
Your GM and Ever-Unreliable Narrator,
-Travis
