The current work on Pure

I'm proud to present you a new way of drawing clouds in the sky!
The current state of Pure 0.75 has already a nice color composition and more ways to have good tonemapping. It already has various solutions for old AC problems, like Autoexposure and the way weather is created. It is also way more advanced than Sol code-wise.

But the current 3d clouds are lacking quality, if the are generated to use less gpu/cpu consumption. Many people wish a port of the 2d clouds from Sol to Pure.

I will not do this! Sol's 2d clouds also stressing the system. There is another method, which will bring much better skies, but causing nearly no additional consumption of GPU and CPU.

The next Pure puplic development preview will feature 360° skydome. This are very high resolution skydome pictures, projected at the sky shader's dome.

They only taking space in the VRAM, but with the usage of DDS files in Nvidia's BC7 format, a 16k (16384x4096pixel) file will only cost 64 MB of VRAM. Also with BC7, which was introduced in CSP 1.76, the loading into the VRAM is extremly fast, because its made by the GPU not by the CPU. So such a 16k BC7 picture loads into VRAM in parts of a second, while a BC5 picture takes over 5 seconds.

But on the other side, you wouldn't notice this loading time, because this is done in the asynchronous thread, so AC will not notice it and so there is no frame flow influence.

Those skydome picture has some disadvantages:
You will not see the sun, because its a picture infront of it. Maybe i can solve this in the future, by editing the skydomes and making the plain sky parts transparent.
Another one is, that they are static. They just rotate with the sun.

But after some tests, those disadvantages are minor in comparison to the much nicer look of those real skies.

I also added a new shadow mode for these 2d clouds. A very simple 3d clouds layer draws some shadows on the ground. You don't see those clouds,  only their shadows! This will give you a great immersion, having the nice real sky domes and fake 3d clouds shadows.

We are currently working on an unloading of textures from the VRAM after usage. This will give people with all kinds of graphics card the ability to use very high resolution sky texture, even if they have limited VRAM. It then needs at maximum just 128 MB of additional VRAM.

I think this clouds render method will have a boost for all people, esp. in VR.

Last but not least:
The new method is already build to give modders the ability the create their own skydome sets. Pure will have a default set and maybe an advanced set with much more texture. Those sets are managed via an individual script per set. Sets are selectable in the Pure Config app. I hope this will open a whole new catagory of graphics mods with AC!

best regards

Peter

Hey Peter, This might not be the right place to ask, but you are in contact with Ilja, and I've been seeing some Discords and Subreddits sharing a "1.79" version of CSP, despite not being in Ilja's patreon. Is it definitely some bootleg stuff? I'm kinda concerned at the rate people are sharing it.

D
Daniel Rubarth · May 30, 2022

Dear Peter, i think many of us are a bit nervous about the silence of Ilja - more than 3 month of complete silence. are you in contact with him beause - as you said - Sol 3 with pure as base will need a new version of CSP - so no update from ilja means no update from you, correct? thanks for any feedback.

P
Peter Boese · June 1, 2022

Ilja said, CSP 1.78 is nearly ready, but he is working an some bugs with the new PBR track shaders. If. Those are fixed, the new CSP will be released. CSP 1.78 will bring the support for skydomes and custom wfx shaders. So imo I can release things more often than now. I'm sorry for the long delay, but all I can say is. Pure 0.102 is ready for a release, but it would make no sense without CSP 1.78...

P

Thanks Peter for the confirmation, I had lighting issues with the .78 preview in the Shutoko Revival Project Tunnels, the lamps did not illuminate at all, but the 0.1.77-preview1 (your reccomended version) illuminates just fine, not sure what is going on, I did reinstall of whole CSP, Sol and Pure.bat but the lights would not correctly illuminate on the 0.1.78-preview1. Just reconfirming that the downgrade to 0.1.77-preview1 works full and correctly for me

M
Mr. Panjandrum · April 13, 2022

@Peter Boese: What VR-Specific issues are you looking to solve? I've been running SOL 2.2 and CSP v0.1.76-preview136 for some time now at extreme resolutions in VR (Pimax 8k-X, so I'm pushing AC to the HMD at just over 5000x3000 pixels per eye, but I'm happy in seated VR at 60fps, so it's doable). Performance impact from SOL 2.2 is definitely substantial. I'm going to try Pure v0.75 (is the latest?) soon - hopefully as soon as this evening. Do I *need* to update CSP to v0.1.78-preview1? I'm cautious about switching to a different version of CSP as there are a LOT of version that don't work properly at all in VR. Let me know if there are some specific issues you want us to look for as VR users and I'll try to come back and answer. One quick question of my own; on my system the default AC FXAA function does *nothing* - it simply does not push this to my HMD. I have always thought this is normal (and have read numerous times that this is the case) - if you are using the FXAA rendering pipeline won't this mean that those of us in VR will never see any of your effects that use that pipeline?

M
Mr. Panjandrum · April 13, 2022

Observations thus far: I was able to follow your very clear instructions (thank you!) With CSP v0.1.78p1 and Pure 0.75 my performance was reduced by right around 9% compared to CSP v0.1.76p136 and SOL 2.2. That's a critical 9% however; from a minimum of 60+ (around 63) to around 57ish; meaning that it's currently too demanding for me to maintain that critical 60fps I use for AC (Pimax 8k-x in 60hz mode for seated racing sims, although I test at 90hz so I can see how far above 60 I am peaking). I also noticed that the entire display dims to an unacceptable darkness whenever fireworks were active. Since there appears to be a mode that does not require Post Processing I turned that off for a test and jumped in performance tremendously - by about 25fps to the lows 80s for the most part. There were so many issues however (fireworks were white, for the most part, but had color in the mirrors and reflections) that it's not really a usable mode at this point. Great start though, as the performance would be massively beneficial if you can get it working fully. For reference my rig is a 3080ti and AMD 5900x driving a Pimax 8K-X (at just over 5000x3000 pixels per eye in the case of AC and 104% Steam SS).

M
Morten Eriksen · April 9, 2022

I can not wait to try the new sky domes. How does the sky dome handle stars at night? Is it a separate sky dome for the stars?

P
Peter Boese · April 9, 2022

The stars are a full 360°x360° texture from the beginning of CSP. It's freely downloadable at NASA's website. In Sol and Pure it's delivered at 8K resolution. For the new Pure version i will add the 16k version. Here is the NASA starmap project: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4851 Skydomes are handled the same, but sure the positioning is different. sykdomes are just 360°x180° textures. They have a mask to make the clear sky transparent, so sun, moon and stars are visible through this texture.

Q
Quikslvr · March 1, 2022

Just wondering, Peter -- with the skydomes, will we still be able to have those beautiful pink/orange-tinted skies and clouds at sunrise and sunset?

O
Oliver Deppeler · February 28, 2022

thats definetly a new level. congratulation.

P
Peter Boese · February 28, 2022

Those new skydomes are crossfaded into each other, dependent on the weather and sunangle. So we have still the 24h day/night cycle but with fading skydomes. You can adjust the fade time from 1 to 20 seconds yourself.

S
Stanley I · February 28, 2022

Awesome! Thank you

S
Stanley I · February 28, 2022

Definitely pros and cons. As a few have already mentioned, losing the ability to see the sun and get the dynamic sun rays is a bummer. I too enjoy tremendously the golden hour. How would these sky-domes interact with the passage of time? If its a static image, would it be blending into a different one as the time progresses, or do we lose that as well?

P
Peter Boese · February 28, 2022

Gladly I can tell you we got managed this in yesterday. Ilja was able to code an additional alpha mask. So we can use an opac picture, but define the transparent part with a much simpler mask and so we have the sun back. BTW. It was only the shape that was missing before. The godrays were still visible, so it was not a real downside. But now sun, moon and stars are controlled by this and so we can use those skydomes in nighttime too.

Q
Quikslvr · February 27, 2022

Looks incredible, and your ingenuity just never ceases to amaze! Like Frank, though, not being able to see the sun would be a major disappointment for me. I love the sun glare as the day ends at Daytona, or streaking away from the line at Brands Hatch in the morning -- love seeing the godrays coming through the trees. I really loved the previous direction for Sol/Pure and was hoping that would be perfected, as I think I would/will continue to use that. The sun effects and dynamic clouds are more important to me than photorealism. For me, all that's currently missing with the current configuration is the lightning with Pure; otherwise, it's got everything I need. Nevertheless, it's always exciting to see what you have up your sleeve! :)

Sweet!! Maybe for the "windy" setting you could slowly rotate the dome to make it appear as if the clouds are moving. No pressure, but I hope we don't have to wait long for this, LOL!

P
Peter Boese · February 26, 2022

The rotation is reserved for the sun position. Actually i'm in the texture licence work. After that i need to edit them and composite the default set. So its alot of work still to do...

This looks incredible Peter. Can’t wait to try that out in game. But I’m wondering how it’ll work with transition between weather and time progression as the sun set, etc… Will it be a fade between two domes ? 🤔 In terms of realisms this is the way to go, but I’m afraid of the limiting factors of domes. iRacing used that technique for a long time before moving to dynamic skies for day/night transitions purpose. Looking forward to it !
