Exploring Hytale as a Virtual Tabletop: An RPG Mod API
I was recently inspired by a video by Slugtalks that explored the idea of using Hytale as a virtual tabletop for RPGs. That discussion sparked a broader idea for me, and as a result I’ve begun work on what I aim to be a foundational, RPG-focused Mod API for Hytale.
The goal of this project is to provide a flexible base layer capable of supporting tabletop and RPG-style systems within Hytale. This includes structured character data and modular gameplay systems, without locking creators into a single ruleset or design philosophy. The emphasis is on making systems easy to extend, modify, and build upon. Think of this as infrastructure rather than a finished game.
Current State of the Mod API
At this stage, the API is focused on core building blocks rather than gameplay polish. Some of the key areas that are already implemented or actively under development include:
Entity and Character Framework
* Persistent character data
* Attribute and stat containers
* Hooks for custom progression systems
Action and Event Abstractions
* Server-authoritative logic suitable for RPG and VTT-style play
* Clean extension points for custom rules and mechanics
System-Level Utilities
* Modular registration patterns for RPG components
* Early groundwork for combat, abilities, and effects
* API boundaries designed to remain stable as Hytale evolves
This is very much an early-stage foundation, but the intent is to create something other modders can build on, remix, or completely repurpose for their own projects. Whether that’s a traditional RPG, a tactics-focused game, or a full virtual tabletop experience within Hytale.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, or concerns as this develops. Feedback at this stage is incredibly valuable and will directly help shape the future direction of the API.

Why not mod talespire or rpg engine? for example?
If I'm not mistaken aren't both of those already TTRPG ready? (Unless I am misunderstanding)
