Ritual - Call the Named Thing

Thanks Alex for the message and allowing me to post it here!

This last session the Call the Named Thing ritual got used and it’s the point where the undead should stop feeling like enemies and start feeling like a system.

The party has been dealing with coordinated undead movements for a few sessions now with bodies gathering around ruins. They finally acted on it by using Call the Named Thing (i let them choose rituals before the session as a random roll), after finding a carved name that didn’t read as cursed or divine, just weird and wrong. The ritual made every corpse in the area froze. I kept the sensory details subtle like pressure behind the eyes, a soundless tone, the sense that something had briefly paused to look at them stuff like that. The information came through as impressions rather than answers. The dead weren’t being raised they were permitted, something ancient had noticed a discrepancy, and the world itself wasn’t broken but more like it was interpreted wrong.

After the ritual the zombie started moving again, but they acted different now. They avoided certain places without explanation, stopped attacking randomly, and some simply stood motionless as if waiting for instructions that never arrived. The players walked away realizing what was happening but didn't know why which was exactly the effect I wanted.

From behind the screen, this was the first time the party meaningfully interacted with a forgotten AI system still trying to preserve life by rules that no longer fit the world (hence the undead because the AI is supposed to "keep humans living"). Calling the Named Thing didn’t summon an entity, it flagged the party as something worth tracking. Now the undead aren’t the threat anymore because the AI realizes keeping those humans alive was activly hurting these "new" humans. They’re evidence that the world has been quietly trying to correct itself for a very long time.
