Chapter 33: Marginalia - Part 2
Isabella waited at the edge of the Academy grounds, spine straight against the wrought-iron gate, the picture of someone who had not been standing there impatiently for several minutes.
"You are late," she said, though her gaze had already shifted past Aria to settle on me.
"We're fashionably late," Aria said. "It's different."
Isabella ignored her. "You are coming?"
Not a question, the way she phrased it, but her eyes held the actual one underneath.
"Yeah, she is," Aria said, looping her arm through mine before I'd opened my mouth. "Asked her earlier. She said yes. Like, actual yes, no negotiating, no 'I have reading to do.'"
Isabella's brow lifted a fraction, the closest she came to visible surprise. She studied me a moment longer, cataloguing every detail before committing to a conclusion.
I shrugged, the motion pulling my tail into a slow arc behind me. "I said yes."
"Does this concern Valentina," Isabella said. Flat, precise, the question already half-answered in her own head.
"I said the same thing," Aria put in. "Well. Not those words exactly. More like, are you sure she didn't curse you or slip something in your drink. Same energy though."
"It's not Valentina." I found myself almost amused at how quickly they'd both landed on the same suspicion, as if my saying yes to anything without a fight required an external explanation. "I just wanted to see what the fuss was about. That's all."
Isabella considered this as if looking for contract clauses, turning it over for hidden cost. Whatever she found, she let it go. "It is difficult to describe accurately," she said. "Words tend to undersell the experience."
"That bad or that good?" I asked.
"Neither. Simply insufficient."
Aria didn't wait for further philosophy. She caught Isabella's arm the same way she'd caught mine, tugging us both forward, her tail flicking once with impatience she hadn't bothered hiding. "Okay, come on, we've delayed enough, the night's not gonna wait around for you two to have a whole seminar about it."
"We only just left the gate," I said.
"And every second is a second you could spend changing your mind and running back to bury yourself in a book instead," Aria said, cheerful and utterly serious at once. "Do you know how rare this is? You saying yes on the first ask? No arguing, no 'let me think about it,' no disappearing into the library for three hours first? I'm not risking it. We're going now, while the yes is still fresh."
"I'm not going to change my mind halfway down the street, Aria."
"You say that now." She hooked her arm tighter, practically hauling the two of us into step beside her, hips already finding some rhythm only she could hear. "But I've seen you talk yourself out of dessert. Dessert, Lily. So excuse me if I'm not taking chances tonight."
Isabella's mouth twitched, not quite a smile, and she fell into step on my other side without complaint, her silence more amused than the words would have been.
I let myself be walked, arms hooked between them both, and didn't argue.
*
The Pleasure Dome rose ahead of us, all curved obsidian and warm crystalline light bleeding through the walls like something breathing under the skin of the building.
"It's not the big one," Aria said, nodding toward the structure. "Main District's got the flagship, three times the size, way more theatrical. But this one's better for a first go. Less overwhelming. You want the training wheels version before you do the full track."
Training wheels. Right.
I felt the regret arrive somewhere around the entrance steps, a slow creeping thing that settled into my sternum. What the hell had come over me, saying yes without interrogating the offer first. Twenty-six days of careful calculation and I'd thrown it away over an afternoon of feeling unusually agreeable.
Aria's grip tightened on my arm, as if she'd caught the shift in my weight before I'd fully committed to it. "Nope. No backing out. We're past the point of no return, Lily. You said yes, yes has consequences."
"I'm not backing out," I said, which was almost true.
Isabella's voice came low on my other side, pitched for me alone. "There's no need to worry. We will ease you in." A pause, calculated. "You may be Lilim, but even purebloods relax here on occasion. No one will think less of you for indulging."
Ah. She thought this was about propriety, about royal dignity fretting over a den of vulgar pleasure. Let her think that.
I took a breath that did nothing to steady anything and walked in with them anyway.
The light adjusted around us, warm and low, gold instead of the crystal white outside. The air carried a thickness I recognized now, the kind that used to unsettle me and now simply registered as atmosphere, like walking into a well-heated room.
A succubus met us just past the threshold, dressed for hospitality rather than seduction, though the distinction in Hell was thin. Her gaze found me first, lingered a beat too long, the appraisal of someone cataloguing pureblood markers. I watched her attention catch on my glamoured horns, my glamoured wings, then slide off entirely once the math didn't add up. Her focus moved to Isabella and stayed there.
"Welcome. What can we offer you this evening?"
"The VIP pass," Isabella said, without inflection, without needing to check price or explain herself. "So we may explore at our own pace."
"An excellent choice." The hostess's smile widened, professional and genuine at once. "Will payment be settled now, or shall we send the invoice to your household?"
"Send it to the household."
The hostess nodded, already reaching for something behind the podium, some ledger or token I didn't bother tracking.
"My friend is a first-timer," Isabella added, tilting her head fractionally toward me. "Please make certain she is introduced properly to the amenities."
Aria's smile bloomed wide and immediate, delighted in a way that made my stomach drop.
I looked at Isabella. She looked back, entirely unbothered, the ghost of amusement pulling at one corner of her mouth.
"A first time should be memorable," she said.
"Yes," Aria agreed, far too readily.
I leaned toward Isabella, keeping my voice for her ears only. "Traitor."
*
Aria bounced on her heels, tail flicking in wide arcs behind her, already scanning the corridor beyond the entrance like a kid at the mouth of an amusement park. "Okay, okay, so, what do we do first? There's like a hundred options and you've never done any of them, which is honestly kind of amazing when I think about it—"
A pair of succubi drifted past us down the hall, one leading the other by a thin gold chain clipped to a collar, both of them laughing about something I hadn't caught. Further in, past an archway strung with beads that clicked like teeth, a mortal knelt at someone's feet, forehead pressed to the floor, utterly still except for the rise and fall of his shoulders. The air carried a low chorus underneath everything, moans layered on moans, the kind of sound that stopped registering as individual voices and became something closer to weather.
"There's the Feedback Chamber," Aria said, counting on her fingers, "which is like, mutual amplification, everyone feeds off everyone at once, super intense for a first time so maybe not that. Or the Aether-Vapor Lounges, which is more chill, kind of a haze thing, you just float for a while. Ooh, or—" her eyes lit up in a way that made me instantly suspicious "—the Chastity Gauntlet. That one's fun. You'd love it. Or hate it. Probably love it."
I had no idea what any of those words meant strung together like that, and I intended to keep it that way. "No."
"There's also the Tentacle—"
"No."
Aria blinked, then laughed, a short bright bark of it. "Right, sorry, forgot. You hate tentacles." She said it the way someone might mention an allergy, filed and moved past without a second thought.
Isabella hadn't so much as turned her head through the whole recitation, gaze tracking a passage further down the hall where warm light spilled gold across the floor. "Perhaps we begin with something less ambitious. A massage. We can expand from there once Lily has acclimated."
Aria snapped her fingers, pointing at Isabella like she'd solved something. "Good idea. Simple. Chill. Nobody drowns on their first swim, right?" She turned to me, hands finding my forearm, thumb tracing an idle line there while she waited. "What do you think, Lily?"
The question landed easier than I expected it to. Massage. A concept with edges I understood, one that didn't require me to imagine what a Chastity Gauntlet might physically entail. "Massage is fine."
"Then it's settled!" Aria's grip shifted from my arm to my hand, fingers lacing through mine with the casual certainty of someone who'd never once considered I might pull away. She was already tugging, already moving, tail swaying loose and pleased behind her. "Come on, let's go pick the masseur. This part's actually kind of fun, they've got like a whole wall of profiles, it's very shopping-for-a-good-time energy—"
Isabella fell into step on my other side, unhurried, the picture of someone who'd expected exactly this outcome from the start. She caught my eye once, and something in her expression came close to a smile.
I let Aria pull me down the corridor, past the beaded archway, past the low gold light and the sounds that no longer startled me the way they once had.

Lily can talk herself out of desert, I wish I had that ability.
Well... I don't think you'd need that ability if you knew what was the dessert Lily talked herself out of.
