Chasing Sunsets, Firebreak and the Road Ahead
Since Chapter 10 has launched, I've been going through Chasing Sunsets from top to bottom and with the help of our dedicated beta testers, cleaning up bugs, errors, inconsistencies, broken math, and typos.
For those of you on Steam, our Chasing Sunsets trading cards launched yesterday, and you should see them turning up in your inventory based on time played.
No matter what, we fix what's broken before we break new ground, but after that we have something of a fork in the road, and we're hoping our patron base can help guide us here.
One fork leads us to remaster the initial chapters in Chasing Sunsets, bringing the art, animations, character models, and presentation up to the same level as the later chapters in the game. This effort would also result in a simplified variable system and removal of custom code that makes localization to other languages and porting to Android difficult. It could also include an integrated in-game walkthrough mode.
The other fork takes us to our Firebreak project, which is the next story set in the Chasing Sunsets universe.
The third third choice would be to split the difference, working primarily on Firebreak and bringing CS production values up as time permits.
To help with you with that choice, we estimate focusing on remastering Chasing Sunsets would take one 4-6 month development cycle and beginning Firebreak development early in 2026. Conversely, completing the CS remaster while actively developing Firebreak has more unknowns, but there would be synergies. Since Firebreak will be built from the ground up to avoid the pitfalls some custom coding in CS created for us (compatability specifically) it would be a relatively simple matter to plug the CS assets into that when it's ready for prime time.
Regardless, it makes our decision easier if we know the sentiment of our supporters, so that's what this is: An opportunity to be heard and help us choose how to best serve you over the next few months.

Great finale to end CS. If the facts about Firebreak are correct, then the next game seems to be like the Apple TV show: Spoiler Warning!!!: For All Mankind. Which is great, sci-fi/space/space opera/etc are my favorite genres and themes.
I have my preference and I voted for it. But you should do whatever feels right to the two of you. I think all three of those choices are valid and I suspect we will get the best content for both Chasing Sunsets and Firebreak if you guys do what it is you want to do.
I wouldn't mind a refresh of CS when the time permits but I feel the best thing to do would be to start working on TaraQuest... er I mean Firebreak.
My desire for FB is purely egoistical: I need more Tara
While I somewhat prefer you focus on FB, you should go with the option that suits you and your development the best
IMO, the game is already the best game in the field. I love the story. The humor is fantastic and the visuals are stunning. I've never had a problem with the beginning of the game. I'm more interested in the next story.
Follow your heart. :]
I am with the majority vote on this. Work on both at the same time.
Just like others have said, don't worry about getting Chasing Sunsets "modernised." I think the focus should now be on your next game and whatever that entails. If you want to go back and rework some renders in Chasing Sunsets during the development cycle of Firebreak to prevent burnout, then by all means, do so. However, as I mentioned, the focus should be on what comes next, not what was. As Ragnar Lothbrok said, "Don't waste your time looking back, you're not going that way."
I chose option 3. While I'm mostly in agreement with those that don't notice much difference in renders as the game progresses, I am however, a compltionist and would love to have a in-game walk through to help with certain things. I am having trouble as well with getting the Jaye x Mal ending and the achievements guide is confusing for me to follow with all the save here, reload save there. So that would be a nice feature to have for those in my position.
I love this story (still trying, unsuccessfully) to get both Jaye and Mal) but, in my view, it's your baby and you should do what makes you happy. If you want to perfect CS before moving on, then that's what you should do. I can wait. Impatiently but I can wait. That said, it's difficult to disagree with Jonathan Hang and James Choke.
Going with option #1. Don't worry about remastering older CHs of CS. Just focused on FB. I, for one, enjoy when Devs keep their game's older content in. It's nostalgic and brings a certain charm to the game. We get to remember, relive, and see how far you guys have grown in skills and development. All part of the whole overall journey experience 😁. Plus… I replayed CS all over in Feb of this year to get that Jaye & Mal throuple 🥰 (Shout out, Vincent Vega, for pointing it out to me). And I thought it still looked and felt amazing 👍🏻! I wouldn't change it for the world 😁!
💯👍
There is something beautiful about playing a game and seeing the renders and quality improve over time. It shows how far both the creator and the project has come. I wouldn't change a thing and dive into Firebreak. CS is already a masterpiece and visually stunning even in earlier chapters. Remastering doesn't seem worth it in terms of impact to work required ratio.
As keen as we all are for Firebreak, I think you guys are perfectionists. The difference between the prologue and early chapter 1 scenes with the rest of the game is stark! Personally, I think you should build the start of CS up towards your high standards you've set for yourself. Perfection breeds perfection. Plus, I think at the moment, your (Stone Fox) introduction to the world is Chasing Sunsets and the first scenes of that I don't think do you justice. Bringing that up to par with later chapters makes a lasting first impression that is certain to impress. Also, it's fine and dandy to say "We'll work on Firebreak now and come back to CS later but after Firebreak, there's likely to be another project and the chances of you wanting to come back to the beginning of CS instead of ploughing ahead with whatever comes after Firebreak is slim, at best. So I think do it now, then it's done and you can move on being even more proud of the game you've released because if you opt to move forward now, realistically you won't ever come back to update CS. I do also think a walkthrough is of great value. After the conclusion of Chapter 10, I was going to go back and have another play through but I was planning on waiting for the remaster first. Obvs it goes without saying that I'll continue to support you guys whatever the decision is
I was tempted to say, "work on CS as time permits", but the truth is you should proceed with Firebreak. For your own mental well-being it's best that way. Find the new challenge, be emotionally excited for what comes next. Someday you can revisit CS, but not now. You're on a roll, don't stop. A day may come when you hit a roadblock, if you feel a change of focus back to a CS Remaster would help, very well.
As much as a remaster on the initial chapters of CS would be cool, I definitely think Firebreak should undoubtedly be your main priority. I think players are satisfied with how CS has wrapped up now, and we're looking forward to Firebreak.
Will you publish CS on GOG?
Chasing Sunsets is the past - ok a very beautiful past i must say - but we want a new game and there wasnt anything wrong with CS, i liked it as it was...but a new game from you definitely is far more exciting, knowing what you can do...but let me say - thank you for Chasing Sunsets, its for me on par with the Goat BaD...🫡💯❤️
It's way better than that one. It doesn't have those over the top difficult free roams.
As some above, I started another playthrough from the beginning after the epilogue dropped. I don't really notice much difference in image quality from start to finish. Of course, any time you upgraded DAZ (Gen 3 > Gen 8, etc there is a small difference. However, your image quality has always been so good that such differences are quite small. From the beginning your images were better than 99% of the competition and I don't really see the need to spend a lot of time on improvements. My vote is to start the new project immediately amd make any necessary improvements to the early chapters of CS as time allows.
It's your project, and you'll do the best job following the path that suits you. Listen to your fans, and realize there's always an element that wants it their way ... NOW!! ... FREE!! ... and will never be satisfied ... or appreciative.
I recently replayed CS after the final update from start to finish. I don't see the need to remaster it right now. Maybe further down the road. But then again I am biased af. CS has remained as my number 2 since I first played it.
I never saw any problems visually or story-wise in _Chasing Sunsets_, but if you want to improve it, thats good too.
I'm abstaining. Do whatever you feel is right for you and the future of SFS. I'll have your back whatever you decide.
I guess i liked the story so much that I really didn’t notice the different quality of models used from the beginning to the end.
Do what is most convenient for you two.
