Next Show After The Sopranos Suggestions
This is going to be a place where you can list me the next show that I will be diving into..! Provide context if you'd like, beware of giving spoilers, and can't wait to check out some more. Your suggestions have been fire lately.
Please try to keep to TWO suggestions.
Alright, have at it!
Comments (197)
You MUST cover the Mike Flanagan series, beginning with Haunting of Hill House - peak filmmaking all around. Also I would love your take on the XFiles after covering Twin Peaks
Boardwalk Empire.
Californication
I don't see SHAMELESS anywhere. American version. Great laughs.
Norsemen. On Netflix. 3 seasons, 6 episodes per season. It's a mixup of The Vikings and The Office. It's a Viking age comedy. Crazy good.
Ozark
Mad Men is the natural next choice, it's a companion piece to the sopranos in a lot of ways. Widow's Bay is the most recent really good show, best mix of horror & comedy I can remember on TV
I vote for PREACHER on AMC 4 seasons starting 2016. Same writers and studio as The Boys. They made this series before The Boys. Instead of superhero’s this series was all about heaven and hell, god, the devil, angles and vampires, with Preacher himself played by English actor Dominic Cooper. If you liked The Boys, you can’t miss this one.
Silo
1999 British sitcom "Spaced"
Banshee - https://youtu.be/VI7haj7HTCA?is=OaJjwfWg9X3m8Ho3 It’s a long lost gem that I don’t know where you can even find anymore lol
Lost or The Leftovers
Preacher is pretty wild and very fun.
Mr. Inbetween
Station 11
The Chair Company
You should definitely check out Atlanta at some point!!
Boardwalk Empire is a must at some point
Actually * The Leftovers should totally be next!!!!! 💗💗💗💗💗
* Altered Carbon * Dollhouse * Lost * Eastbound & Down * Preacher * Atlanta
Portlandia
Deadwood Righteous Gemstones
Detroiters (only two seasons of short episodes of the best absurdist humor from Tim Robinson) Eastbound & Down… I’d describe it but how do you describe a legend like Kenny Powers.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Primal. Primal would absolutely be my first choice
Ken Burns's The Vietnam War. It's a documentary not a traditional TV show - which is a film style I have yet to see you analyze. It is incredibly well done, informative and deep. It is only 10 episodes but each episode is roughly 1.5 hours. So it would effectively be like analyzing 10 different movies. You could space it out between different shows (which to be fair you'll probably need to for your own emotional well-being).
It's an excellent documentary. Don't know the exact quote but one of the veterans or commentator's talks about how the veneer of civilization is paper thin. Those words stuck with me after watching it and am reminded of it all the time because that concept shows itself pretty regularly in our timeline.
Sense8
bojack horseman
GOMORRAH.. get out of the american cinema a lil bit and check this italian crime classic.. thank me later, you're in for a treat
Legion (FX 2017) . Generation Kill (HBO 2008)
Mad Men or Mad Men
Please consider Black Sails and Hannibal.
Peep Show - no doubt
Hannibal.
Foundation on Apple is one of the top ten shows ever IMHO. The Apothecary Diaries is top ten anime series as well.
Deadwood
Interview With The Vampire because it's a stellar work.
Sons of Anarchy and Damages w/ Glenn Close
Widow's Bay!! You'll love it after your love for Twin Peaks. Plus this one is a quick one with just one season so far, so you can watch something else right after. For my second suggestion, there's a lot of great ones here (like the Leftovers, Expanse, etc), but I'd love for you to watch The Americans. Kind of got overshadowed in that era of TV but is so great. Basically a Matthew Rhys double suggestion, lol.
Mad Men
Peep Show!
Back to Peaky Blinders, please.
Weeds
Eastbound and Down is my vote
The leftovers or Mad Men!
Lost - mind bending award winning show
I’ll add votes for Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire both shows that fit the level of quality on this channel. If you are looking for another genre Battlestar Galactica is an excellent drama wrapped in a sci-fi premise.
The Larry Sanders Show
Mad Men or The Leftovers
Veep, in its 7 seasons, collected 68 Emmy noms and 17 wins, including six out of seven wins for Julia Louis-Dreyfus as best actress in a comedy. Tony Hale received two wins for supporting actor. It's absolutely outstanding, brilliant, and timely. Julia's Selina Meyer navigates DC politics and a boring yet packed thankless job, but her aspirations to achieve greatness see her become more and more unhinged as the years pass. It's also chock full of extremely creative insults. Six Feet Under is also brilliant.
The Penguin
Ozark or Silicon Valley pls!
Devs, one season absolute mind bending sci-fi!
* Devs (2020), 1 Season/8 episodes, 51 min, has satisfying conclusion at the end (no cliffhanger) * The Prisoner (1967-1968), 1 Season/17 episodes, 1 hr., no cliffhanger.
Justified
Widows Bay
Widows Bay, One Season, 10 Episodes. Best combo of Horror and Comedy.
The 100, oz or nurse Jackie
Handmaid’s Tale
ozark
Queens Gambit if you haven’t done that one yet! Fire show ♟️
longer - Oz, Deadwood quick one season - Watchmen
Mad Men Deadwood
X-Files
The Shield such a great show, the 1st FX original show helped the anti hero train keep rolling and we do not get Justified or Breaking Bad without it. It is also Walton Goggins best role. Each season gets better and better culminating in i think the best series finale i have ever seen.
The PItt!!!! Simpsons seasons 1-10 if you've never seen it
X-Files - Seeing as you liked Twin Peaks so much. Otherwise, just not another comedy show, seems like there's enough on here already, IMHO... My second choice would be Justified or Deadwood.
Deadwood Mad Men
Legion, Battlestar Galactica
Legion is so good
If you can, watch the pilot episode of the series 'Millennium' (1996). I'm sure you'll love it.
The Righteous Gemstones
Dexter
Demon Slayer
Atlanta — one of the best shows ever made
Lost The Leftovers
HBO's Rome. Or Deadwood. I've never watched season 3 or the movie and would watch along with that for sure. Or Eastbound and Down, because it's fucking hilarious and I love baseball.
The Leftovers!!!!
If you enjoy sci-fi: Battlestar Galactica
FROM
Silicon Valley (HBO), comedy created by Mike Judge. all-time great. A almost painfully satirical but accurate depiction of Silicon Valley startup culture and all of its absurdities and out of touch tech weirdo billionaires. Only Curb/Sunny can top it for me as for outright comedy honestly.
XFiles!!!! Please!!!!
Check out The OA! Trust me, it'll blow your mind
The Expanse- It's like "The Wire" in space with extremely timely, relevant issues explored. The Expanse also has one of the most accurate portrayals of space travel ever shown on TV. Gravity feels like a main character throughout the series. Hannibal-arguably one of the best network shows ever produced. Never seen something so visually beautiful from a network TV show. Mads Mikkelsen is PHENOMENAL as Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Utopia (UK/bbc) or Killing Eve (UK/BBC) are GOATed shows!!! Can't imagine you not enjoying them!
Justified. PLEASE. I need a real reaction to Justified. Slept on gem. The X-Files is culturally relevant for its time and you would LOVE doing deep dives into the background of filming the show. It was WAY ahead of its time. I believe it's the first serialized show that had an over-arching theme crossing many seasons. It's totally normal today. But they literally had to hide the fact they were doing it. This is because of no easy way to rewatch old episodes like we do now streaming. Even the seasons released on VHS wouldn't have every episode of that season. So different compared to now.
Deadwood The Leftovers
Plzzz The Leftovers yesss
Deadwood. Some of the greatest dialogue written for television and so many unforgettable characters. Then Justified. Walton Goggins at his absolute best antagonizing Timothy Olyphant at his absolute best. Timothy Olyphant stars as a deputy U.S. Marshal in both.
Ozark
If you're into nerdy/techy/videogame history, there's a criminally underappreciated AMC drama called Halt and Catch Fire. It was kind of a blatant ripoff of Mad Men, transported to the '80s, but it really worked. Great writing, fantastic cast. And it only had 40 episodes, so it could be kind of a palate cleanser between longer shows. I'd also second the recommendation of Peep Show that someone made above. Super fun little British sitcom, built around a camera contrivance that you'd think would get really old quick but it didn't. I think you'd be interested in it technically.
Deadwood. So many wow moments. You're going to be disappointed if you pick one of these other shows. And there's a good reason why this came on immediately after the Sopranos, it's of that caliber. It deserved to be the follow-on show.
family guy
A couple of great shows with crazy titles that are impossible to predict, but were on niche channels and probably haven't been seen enough to win a poll: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency [Elijah Wood in 18 episodes of chaotic coincidence based on the Douglas Adams books (2016-2017)] The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret [Arrested Development alums David Cross and Will Arnett reunite for 18 episodes, where a clueless american tries to run a sales team (of 1) in London (2010-2016 (4 year gap between seasons 2-3))]
Fargo TV series is an extremely underrated show, with some of the best writing and acting, especially the first 3 seasons
He’s seen it!
Ozark or The Shield
Boardwalk Empire
Widow's Bay or Slow Horses. They both have short seasons. Slow Horses is one of the most underseen shows but is consistently great.
Midnight Mass (Mike Flanagan 7 episode miniseries, easily his best show after The Haunting of Hill House, although, I like it even more) The Twilight Zone (The original Rod Serling series is still so damn good)
Too Old to Die Young (2019) Copenhagen Cowboy (2022–2023) Two series by writer/director madman Nicolas Winding Refn Very stylized and cinematic crime/thriller/dramas which you just have to experience. His movies are great too (Drive and Neon Demon) but since you asked for series these ones are quite the watch!
For another HBO series, I'm going to recommend Carnivàle. It's weird in a way that I think you would appreciate. The downside is that it was cancelled before it could receive a proper resolution, but it's still worth watching. I'm also going to recommend something completely different that I have recommended before: Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. It's the farthest thing from prestige television. It's a British comedy show about a fictional 80s horror/sci-fi/action television series written by an starring the fictional hack horror author, Garth Marenghi. There are two levels to the show. First, there are the scenes from the fictional show-within-a-show, Darkplace. It's deliberately incompetently made, and a lot of the humor can only really be appreciated by someone who pays attention to the filmmaking aspects of what they watch. Then there's another level consisting of interviews with the fictional actors who starred in the show-within-the-show, displaying their delusional grandiosity about the quality and cultural importance of the show they created. There are only 6 episodes of the show, so it isn't a big time commitment, and it has a loyal cult fanbase, so reacting to it might help draw in new viewers to your channel. It's available for free on Youtube, but I believe it's also on Amazon Prime in the states.
Garth Marenghi's hilarious and also pretty short.
Sense8 (2015-2018) 24 Ep.
Hannibal The Leftovers
The X-Files (1993-2018) 218 Ep.
The Shield from FX; more wild cop/crime drama, but this time its so much pulpier. Bojack Horseman is also a great idea.
Boardwalk Empire
Get Shorty (27 episodes, Chris O'Dowd - The IT Crowd, Sean Bridgers - Deadwood, Ray Romano) I think people think it's just a remake of the movie and somehow miss it. Really excellent & overlooked show. Deadwood would be my 2nd nomination if not already nominated (and I assume you've seen already, but if not...)
Warrior (HBO MAX)
LOST!!!
The Leftovers
Atlanta
Leftovers and Widows Bay
As some folks have already suggested, “The Leftovers” would be a great watch, it has that mysterious and surreal feel that Twin Peaks had and also features some incredible acting. “BoJack Horseman” is my other suggestion, starring Will Arnett who plays Gob in Arrested Development, a great adult animation series that is both hilarious and deeply sad.
THE REHEARSAL
THE CHAIR COMPANY
THE WHITE LOTUS
Smallville
Black Sails
The Leftovers - The two best shows of all time in my opinion are Twin Peaks and The Leftovers (and Andor...) An incredible incredible show, so emotional, so devastating, so mysterious. You can see the progression from Twin Peaks to LOST to The Leftovers. All amazing shows, some of the best. Watching this after Twin Peaks would be perfect, only better time would be right after LOST. You may not watch it this time...but you NEED to watch it at some point. Hannibal - A show that you can REALLY sink into the filmmaking. The cinematography, editing, music, acting, story, set design, FOOD design...it's an INSANELY gorgeous show, it's incredibly well made. It's intense, bleak, SUPER dark, but also beautiful and poetic and romantic...Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal is one of the greatest characters...one of the greatest performances in all media. Seriously...it's that good. HE is Hannibal now. There are some highs in this show that are among the best in any show
It's disturbing how many times throughout the series my mouth would water from the food Hannibal made.
I give high high praise to: The Leftovers Six Feet Under The Shield
Dexter. He's a psychopath that only kills other killers and goes through character development
An absolute sleeper contender, but Utopia, the 2013 show from the UK, is one is the best shows ever made despite only lasting for two seasons
Mad Men—truly remarkable. When I think of Mad Men, I think of the commentary it gave on patriarchy and the old archetypes of masculinity and the strong silent type. Thinking of The Sopranos, when Tony Soprano would say, "Where are the Gary Coopers?" this show highlights the old expectation of the strong, silent archetype in males and how that led to separate types of mental prisons. Anyways, it’s exactly the type of show you’ve liked in the past, and there would be so much interesting discussion after each episode. Another one is BoJack Horseman, very heavy on how childhood trauma both forms and breaks your brain on other aspects while being a commentary on celebrity. It's an animated show and a black comedy—though it can be quite sad. Also has familiar faces from both Breaking Bad and Arrested Development voicing characters that you might get a kick out of.
THE SHIELD or JUSTIFIED!
Mad Men or The Leftovers. IMO, nothing else meets your "three requirements". 😅
The Leftovers
Please do the Leftovers, some of the best acting and storytelling of all time!
Sharp Objects - slow burn thematically dense southern gothic murder mystery reminiscent of True Detective S1 with gorgeous dreamlike filmmaking. Explores themes like generational trauma and alcoholism. The White Lotus - Social satire/black comedy/suspense thriller anthology series, each season is set in a different exotic locale at the titular White Lotus resort chain and explores different social themes with an overarching focus on class conflict.
Yesss Sharp Objects is so underrated, it’s so well written and acted!!
HBO’s Rome. Best historical show I’ve ever seen. Chronicles the fall of the roman republic and rise of the Roman Empire
It can be argued without Rome we probably wouldn't have got Game of Thrones with HBO.
The Leftovers. It’s a highly under appreciated HBO show with and stellar cast and is very well written. It finished up in only three seasons but it’s both incredibly funny and full of pathos.
Boardwalk Empire. Prohibition era crime show that stars Steve Buscemi and a host of other great character actors. It was made by a lot of the same team from the Sopranos.
Ozark for sure
Ozark
Deadwood. Best dialogue ever written.
Calamity Jane had best lines.
Mad Men -- a character study of Ad Men (and women) in the 60s. The costume and set design are beautiful, the characters 3 dimensional and well-acted, and the cinematography picturesque. And as mentioned by others, the creator is a Sopranos writer and I think he takes some of that influence with him.
The Expanse - incredibly immersive and addictive SF show that is perfect for fans of hard SF like Alien, 2001, Solaris, etc but with amazing characters. I don't watch most SF shows other than stuff like Devs and Severance, and I don't do Star Wars/Trek, Marvel stuff either, if that makes a difference. You'll also likely get a bunch of new Patrons because it has a very strong online community who love good reactors.
I really like that the series doesn't rely on technobabble but lets the viewers experience it through the human condition and showing, not telling. It's probably one of the things that have attracted numerous people to the show that aren't traditionally science fiction fans.
The Leftovers. I became a member just to vote for it. It’s one of the few shows I’ve seen that gets better with every season
The Americans - Another slow-burn, character study Sopranos-type show about two KGB spies who are posing as Americans during the Cold War with amazing writing, acting, and great philosophical discussions to be had. Highly underrated and one of the best shows from the last decade. Another one is The Leftovers but if I’m correct it should be taking over the Twin Peaks slot so idk if this is a place for it.
I loved it! 💕
Battlestar Galactica
Adolescence or The Haunting of Hill House. Two masterpieces
Widow's Bay
Justified
Slow Horses 🫡
From
Deadwood Keep the golden mid-2000s HBO shows going (Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome, etc)!
Dark
He has seen it already
Mythic Quest- James vs games and james vs cinema unite with a dash of always sunny mixed in
Eastbound and Down - Danny McBride, Will Ferrell and some other familiar faces. Danny McBride plays a washed up baseball player that thinks he's still the shit. It's hilarious and there are only a few seasons
Preacher, not reacher- Preacher, awesome cast, great visuals, fun and insane plots really think you would like it
Nurse Jackie
Deadwood Mad Men
Deadwood. Loved it. So disappointed only 3 seasons. They had a gold mine there.
Snowfall
Tales From The Crypt. One of the most famous and best horror shows. Just came to Shudder so it would be very easy to access.
Firefly (all 14 episodes which leads into the film Serenity) and ... Miami Vice, a legendary, groundbreaking TV show that was sold as "MTV Cops in Miami" ... the list of guest stars alone on Miami Vice is amazing and that includes several musicians ... the plots were groundbreaking during its 1984-1989 run
Hannibal (2013), an absolutely beautiful show following a FBI profiler, Will Graham, who with the help of psychiatrist Hannibal lecter (mads mikkslesen), helps to profile criminals. Yet The FBI doesn't know Hannibal is A serial killer himself. The shows engine is Hannibal and wills dynamic. 3 seasons long and has one of the best episode oat, "mizumono"
This show is incredible and nobody reacts to it!
Hi James I’d recommend : The Expanse, it’s a great Science Fiction show with multiple seasons, different human factions battling for territory in the solar system. Great acting, cool effects and great story. Then for my second recommendation I’d also suggest season 1 of Altered Carbon. Cool cyberpunk detective story.
24
Boardwalk Empire
Lost would be an awesome journey I believe! Also Prison Break, especially the first season is so addictive
og prison break would be fun no reboot tho
Dexter
I Think You Should Leave
The Good Place! Deeply human, hilarious and full of twists. It's not in the "prestige" lists, but it's got a lot more to say about humanity than most of those dramas.
Widow’s Bay
James would LOVE Widows Bay. So many winks and classic tropes he’d be able to spot and appreciate
The Night Of - all time great mini series that takes place in New York and has a lot of familiar faces from the sopranos and the wire Oz - this show was the first hbo drama and paved the way for there to be the sopranos and the wire. Only downside is you will have to do a lot of editing to post on YouTube lol very graphic
Eastbound and down
futurama or modern family 🤝🏻
i think you would like Mad Men if you haven’t seen it yet! the creator Matthew Weiner worked on the final two seasons of the Sopranos, and although the shows are pretty different, i think you’d get a lot out of it!
Counterpart. Espionage show with a sci-fi bent to it. Very original, very well written and shot, and fantastically acted, with LOTS of JK Simmons being awesome!
I love that you just suggested that like nobody has seen it and it's so freaking phenomenal
Mr. Inbetween
Deadwood, one of the best HBO series of all time.
You should watch The Studio. It’s on Apple TV. I have a feeling that you will love it
Love this suggestion!
Ozark
House of the Dragon - I know GoT ended badly but this is a return to form plus it’s very relevant right now. Black Sails - Pretty much GoT but pirates with some of the best character work I’ve seen
Black Sails is one of those shows that progressively gets better and better to the point it became one of the best tv experiences when it was released.
sons of anarchy ! or for something more lighthearted modern family would be great
Peep Show
Ozark
Sons of anarchy
Mad Men or Leftovers
Black sails or normal people, normal people is really short and has some amazing camera work
Justified
I gotta say it again, please Justified 🙏 Would be such a great reaction specifically from James
