DIRECTOR'S CUT: Psychology of a Hero: ALADDIN
How do become comfortable with being yourself? How do you quit negative self-talk?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at Aladdin’s journey from insecurity and low self-worth to self-acceptance and integrity. They talk about Aladdin’s negative self-talk and why he keeps hurting people. Jonathan explains why insecurity makes us unable to accept love from others. Aladdin does this a lot! And Alan relates to this a lot... send him praise in comments! And they can’t watch Aladdin without talking about Robin Williams’s unforgettable performance as the Genie.

Aladdin is my absolute favorite Disney movie of all time. I’ve seen it so many times. Love love love it!
Aladdin is one of my favorite Disney movies. And, in my opinion, Robin Williams BEST role ☺️
Jono: How many of you are singing along? Me: Stops mid-lyric 😆
Aladdin and the prince of thieves: daddy issues Episode?
I love your hair Alan
1) I was absolutely singing along. 2) Alan, fantastic hair. 3) “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.” ― Mark Twain. Great quote.
The person doing sound capturing Robin Williams must have had something like the sharingan to keep up with him! Also we need Iroh! =D ALL OF IROH! All his interactions with the other people! Give me 1 hour, 2 hours hell 3 hours pure Iroh talk STRAIGHT INTO MY VEINS!
Iroh episode is in the works!
I can call you Betty? Betty, when you call me, you can CALLLL MEEEEE AL!!!!!!
You guys have been covering a lot of robin williams this year. Any particular reason other than he's awesome?
Accountability vs just punishing yourself... woof. I do wish more people understood that addiction doesn't just happen to "bad people" - I think this misconception creates more addiction. Addiction can make people do bad things when they get desperate and stop caring about others and stuff but plenty of wonderful, kind, generous, strong people become addicts. <3
Please do an uncle Iroh episode!!!!
Coming soon!
Just had a thought.....I wanna see the boys react to how to lose a guy in 10 days. I just feel like that would be an epically entertaining video
My wife was singing along. I was not. Still a great movie, though.
Mad props to Alan's hair in this episode. The hair stylist was on point. :-)
Aladdin was class then when I saw it in the Cinema all them years ago and it’s class now , The ending made me tear up to your not alone in that Alan , Robin Williams words will always resonate with me , I think the message of the whole movie for me is Stay True To Yourself no matter what life throws at you or situations your in 🙂☮️💚🙏⭐️
Carpet is my favourite character :D especially in that scene where Jasmin catches Aladin on lying.
Alan, your hair is gorgeous, and you are a very attractive man! But I think your vulnerability is much more important than that!
Can someone let us know where to find that comedy video about the sound mixer for Robin Williams that Alan mentioned at around 11:00? Also, his hair really is awesome. :)
I was totally singing along too!
Ooh, speaking of the animators, a fun side-tangent about this would be bringing up The Thief and the Cobbler; you can ee a TON of style influence on the genie from Emperor ZigZag and such. There was a whole dust-up about it.
Anyone else catch the first four notes of "When you wish upon a star" at 16:30 when the Genie does the camera frame on Aladdin? I JUST noticed that, and I think they put that there because the theme of that scene is "this is where he SHOULD be wishing the genie free."
Learning I am Aladdin is... something. Learning not to hate myself would sure be easier with a magical genie-filled journey. For now, therapy. I look forward to the day I can see myself like Al finally could.
1. Is it possible not to sing along? 2. Alan you are magnificent. 3. Alan and I commented about Aladdin looking at the camera at the exact same time (are we twins?) 4. It’s nice to see Jono give himself credit for his hard work and growth. 5. Not my favorite scene from Enchanted. 6. These Robin Williams videos are going to destroy me. 7. Why is this a list?
"How many of you are singing along?" Damn, I got called out.
Yes, I did sing along with Aladdin at the beginning. And yes, Alan's golden hair is magnificent.
Another Robin Williams movie (sorta)! Cinema Therapy’s on a streak! Keep it up! 😁
This was the movie of my childhood. My first introduction to Robin Williams.
Jono, why do humans default to black & white thinking? Is it because that's the "factory default" and many of us don't realize that's not the full range of possibility by the time we develop our prefrontal cortex? And at that point, it's a very deep neural pathway?
Basically -- brains are efficient/lazy to a fault and that includes to the detriment of self-actualization.
Always a good video to wake up to on Monday morning
Question about sound balancing -- is this finally a job for AI to give a useful tool to the human sound engineer? If the AI could look for and flag anything outside that dynamic range, then a sound engineer could fix it in post rather than having to retake? I know sound engineering entirely through what I've seen in TV and movies (i.e. I know less than nothing) so maybe it doesn't work that way. But I should think that AI could look for an expected decibel range for the vocal layer (as opposed to the whole product) and flag it that way. The same could be done as a final validation on the complete piece -- map the vocals and map the full product, knowing that you expect a vocal range to float on top of the orchestra/background noise, and flag all the spots where the vocals map lower than the full product.
The problem with sound dynamic range is the same as with optical dynamic range: your equipment can only record such low or such high volumes (or brightness) before it goes to 0 or max out. You can't brighten up a pitch black picture or dim down a pitch white picture to bring back the details. Similarly if the amplitude of the sound goes beyond the max recording capability or minimum recording sensitivity of your microphone, then the information is lost. You need to change the amplitude range before the sound gets out of range, similarly how you need to change the aperture of your camera before you take the picture. If the information is captured, then AI can help with any kind of post processing afterwards. If you get just slight distortions, then based on other bits of the recording you can reconstruct the original voice with AI, deepfake or something like this already does similar fake voices, but when you want so specific results, you probably need to build your own AI for it.
Alan, your hair is truly fantastic, but it's far from your only redeeming feature. I think your vulnerability is certainly one as well. 💗
Great episode kind of relatable actually. It doesn't really happen often that some girl'd like me but if she did my natural response is explain all my faults and why she is wrong to like me :D I would also have problem breaking up with anyone because I'd feel like I'm ungrateful even though reasonably I know that's bullshit way to function :D I always thought they could use jafar to fulfil their wishes :D I personally like live action version slightly better. I don't deny robin williams superiority in any movies he appears in but since will smith could build on that he was great a swell and I like that he got more personal storyline and romance as well. I also like that while alladin has the same problem he doesn't go that far from his ideals, he doesn't take back his promise to free genie. I also like that genie becomes a man instead of just free imho it builds well into jafar's fate- it's either free or allpowerful genie nothing really between that. This episode kind of reminds me of hobbit and thorin after he became king. "You sit here in these vast halls with a crown upon your head and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been." Not so extreme with alladin but similar in tying your worth to material stuff. Btw. Thorin episode would be absolutely great :D
Thank you for this one. I know a ton of people that I am gonna send this to. 😅
Such a great movie! As someone who struggles with self worth this hits home. Working on myself like Alan has said is a challenge that sucks haha but worth it!
Amazing episode ❤️❤️
I remember watching this movie and relating so much to Aladdin’s thoughts on himself. Just the thought you don’t want to be yourself yet you also defend yourself 😭 it’s so confusing
This makes my heart so happy! Aladdin was my Disney crush growing up haha.
