Therapy Deep Dive: Ted Lasso - Divorce & Breakups
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are talking about Ted Lasso and healthy breakups. They discuss how Ted Lasso subverts the trope of nasty breakups through Ted and Michelle's divorce. They love each other even though they are no longer in love with each other. We love to see it in media!

Ted Lasso just did the impossible: made a divorce look healthier than most marriages on TV. 💔➡️💛 While every other show treats breakups like cage fights, Ted and Michelle quietly rewrite the script. Two people who love each other but aren't in love anymore—and somehow that's not a tragedy, it's growth. No revenge arcs. No bitter custody monologues. Just two humans choosing respect over resentment. Jonathan and Alan nail it: this show doesn't subvert the nasty breakup trope—it disarms it. Ted proves you can end a marriage without ending the care. That's not weakness. ... That's emotional intelligence ... If Hollywood needs a template for 'conscious uncoupling' that doesn't sound like a Goop headline... it's right here. ⚽🎬" #cryingwithalan
"go get divorced!" 😂
Ted & Beard friendship goals episode?
We're working on some ideas for more Ted Lasso episodes!
umm this is funny because i just broke up with my bf like last week. are yall reading my diary tho?! 👀
Could we negotiate a Ted Lasso patreon mini series? There’s a lot to go on. Nate’s story, Keeley’s relationships, Rebecca getting over Rupert and the biggest question of all, did coach beard dream Gary Lineker and Thierry Henry?
I recently came across an idea that I liked, which is that just because something ends does not mean it is a failure. One of my proudest moments was breaking up with a boyfriend as soon as I realized that I was not in love with him, and was never going to be. It hurt. It hurt him, and it hurt me. But letting that relationship end let both of us find happiness with other people. He started dating his future wife less than 6 months later. Not quite the same scale as marriage and divorce, but I still consider that one of the most successful relationships I've ever had. Ending it is what made it successful, in my eyes.
Thanks Alan, on my way to get a divorce! Lol! 🤣Jk
Hugs!
