EXCLUSIVE EPISODE: Psychology of a Hero: Steve from STRANGER THINGS

How do you grow out of your insecurities?

In this Patreon-exclusive episode, licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright react to Steve from Stranger Things and his journey from sh***y boyfriend to good man. They discuss the accountability that allows him to have such strong growth, and they talk about how likable Joe Keery is.

NOTE: This was meant to be a YouTube episode, which is why it's not like a typical exclusive episode. Stranger Things content performed poorly on YouTube, so we unfortunately had to pivot. We're so grateful for your support here, so enjoy this bonus exclusive episode!

Hi, everyone, Jono and Alan ! I joined your Patreon recently, but I've been watching your episodes for several years. I thank you SO MUCH for your insights, vulnerability and openness, they are warmly felt and truly INSPIRING! Jono, your insights into people's behaviour and to accountability helped me shape my own vision! Alan, thank you for being so open honest and true to yourself and your feelings. And watching your communication, the way, you support and cherish each other... Also gives the example how it can be. Dreaming of ordering your merch hoodie someday to among warmth for me, being able to answer questions of others about it and recommend you, guys! I'd Really love to go on your live shows someday and be able to meet you guys and thank you in person, but unfourtunately, I'm not in America. Thank you from my heart!

Thank you for this extra episode on Steve! Sorry the ST episodes aren’t doing well. Another note, while my sister and I were watching this…we both randomly had the same thought about you doing a Psychology of a Hero or something about sportsmanship for Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez in The Sandlot (maybe because it’s baseball season!)

OMG they said my name at the end! It's the word amoeba with an S. Because my name is Sam and people keep comparing me to an amoeba when I tell them I'm ace.

What a weird comparison. Happy to say your name, though! - Jono

I don't know why we think Stranger Things doesn't do well on youtube but I am glad I am a patron to watch an episode about my favorite character Steve!

I don't know why either but it makes me sad!

Alan, my guy, you missed the layup: "I don't need therapy for my hair" when "I don't need hair-apy" was right there. It's ok, I still love you anyway. Also: man do I love Steve Harrington, and Joe Keery. Ever seen that dude in interviews? He's quite possibly the most effortlessly charming human being in existence.

He's delightful and you nailed that dad joke! - Jono

Rewatching the show for season 5 really had me reevaluating my opinion of season 1 Steve. He was a high school prick. But breaking Jonathan's camera after he took pictures of his girlfriend? Like... Yeah. I get that. He does have legitimate reason to wonder if Nancy is cheating on him. But like you guys are saying, there are flashes of "oh, the roots of later season Steve are already here". It's not a total flip mid season for dramas.

Thank you very much for the Steddie fanfic resource episode this will be very helpful lol Seriously, though, I’m so sorry to hear ST content performed poorly on YouTube, I’ve been loving it!

Steve turned from my least favourite character in Season 1, to one of my favourites by later seasons. Joe Keery really excelled at humanising Steve.
