EXCLUSIVE EPISODE: Trauma Responses in STRANGER THINGS
How do you respond to trauma and cope after it?
In this Patreon-exclusive episode, licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright talk about trauma responses in Stranger Things. They take a look at healthy and unhealthy ways characters respond to trauma for each of the reactions: fight, flight, fawn, freeze… and f**k. Yes, that’s a trauma response.

I heckin needed this episode-so cathartic, thank you!
My wife always says "it came to me in a dream" when she knows exactly how something is gonna happen.
That's eerie AF, but also super cool. - Jono
I feel like Billy's response to his dad when he can't find Max is an example of fawning. Billy does get smacked around a bit, but only when he's pushing back against his dad.
I’m sad this show is over!
I saw a video about Winona, and her past life struggles and how she sort of fell in and out of Hollywood and film, despite being a great actress. Her breakup with Johnny Depp sent her into a depression that was uncontrollable. During this time, she saw a news channel share a missing child segment, and the child was from her hometown and she remembered seeing her and even waving at her and her friends who recognized her while she was home. She contacted the news outlet and begged to help incentives on the search for this little girl. She even offered a massive cash reward, and became connected to the family and tried to support them as best as she could. But they later found the little girl who unfortunately didn't make it. I believe shortly after that Winona was caught stealing (and of course it was the one time she did it apparently), and it became a whole scandal. A new interview with her recently she talked about when she got the role as Joyce, she wanted to embody that desperation of finding her son, and channeled the pain that family felt looking for their little girl, and even told them she wanted to play that role FOR them. In a way, maybe her playing the role of Joyce finding her son and saving him, was a reality she wanted so badly for that family to have with their daughter. Knowing all this gives Joyce so much more depth to how she played the character in general.
Regarding Murray: I actually wonder if he has what some may term “mommy issues.” He is easily sarcastic or even condescending with the men and boys around him, but when the women give him sass—Joyce, Nancy, and even (maybe especially) Erica—he has nothing to say. Just a pattern I noticed 😆
Anger is absolutely an appropriate response a lot of the time. What’s inappropriate is when the anger leads you to behave destructively.
Absolutely phenomenal episode. I agree that in the 80s, Will might not have gotten such a strong, unanimous show of support, but who needs to see that ish?! We lived it! It sucked! Also, there was plenty of group-feels going on to drag along those who might have been more ambivalent. Let the homophobes be uncomfortably silent and realize they're outnumbered, in a reality where psionic alien monsters kidnap children into nightmare dimensions, I'm okay with a bit of suspended disbelief!
One of my favorite Tim Minchin lyrics: "I mean, you're special but you fall within a bell curve."
This is a very subtle sign, but did you notice that after season 1 Nancy never had long hair again? Now that might just be a coincidence but it's possible it's a small but physical marker of her change from pre trauma to post trauma.
I'm not certain murph and hop were down with will. They didn't respond. Which is pretty telling. I think the only thing in their heads at that moment was. "OK, are you still a superhero? Great! That's what we need right now! Now can we get back to loading the van!?!"
So excited that there are people who haven’t watched ST but want to now! It’s been one of my happy places for a decade.
Since y’all brought up the 80s, I gotta say the only time I can say they borked the 80s element was how Lucas would rewind the Kate Bush tape… anyone who ever recorded or played cassettes knows that they are TWO SIDED. That was a 90 minute tape and he only used one side?! Insanity.

Perhaps Dustin season 5 has fawning? After the death of Eddie he mainly focuses his anger towards a specific group of people the jocks. But instead of making them like him, he makes them angry on purpose. Dustin also has the fight response towards Steve in season 5 because of the death of Eddie and his fear of losing Steve like he lost Eddie
Never seen this show, but your reactions are making me want to watch it! I always love seeing people so passionate and moved about something they genuinely enjoy
My favourite YouTube Dads covering my favourite TV show. It has so much to teach us, especially in psychology!
I’ve never watched Stranger Things but this video has intrigued me.
You definitely should, at least the first two or three seasons. The acting, writing and soundtrack are amazing.
I'm surprised that Eddie wasn't used as a flight example, maybe in a part 2... perhaps...?
Any chance for more Eddie!
