So, this movie isn't the best place to start with Transformers. Literally, Hasbro made this film to kill off a bunch of the old toys and introduce a new series of toys. But, there's a whole 2 seasons of the animated series before this movie occurs. Season 1 had 16 episodes and Season 2 had a whopping 49 episodes. There's also a 30 episode Season 3 after this movie and a quickie 3 episode arc that's 'season' 4

Watch the first Michael Bay Transformers, Peter Cullen voiced Optimus Prime in all of the live action movies.

This is actually an excellent franchise with very deep lore. The two factions, autobots and decepticons (good and evil respectively) have been at war for millions of years. The race as a whole hails from the planet cybertron. But after millions of years of war their resources began to dwindle and the planet was badly affected. Optimus prime, the leader of the autobots set out with a group of his faction to find additional resources and decepticons pursued and attacked. As a result, they crashed on earth by pure accident. And their war continues on earth. That's the set up for the 1984 cartoon series. This movie came out after two years of establishing those heroes and villians and their powers and such. So coming in at the movie can be a bit confusing. Bottom line is, they regretted killing off prime because of massive backlash. Children left the theater in tears because of it. Cullen brought us a hero with his performance. And that's why he's so fondly remembered. Hope that answers a few questions. 😊

Leonard Nimoy is the voice of Galvatron ,and even though you haven't watched any Star Trek yet i'm sure you know who Spock is.. Blur is voiced by John Moschitta Jr, who for a time held the Guiness World Record for fastest talker. Back in the day he did commercials for FedEx, as well as Micro Machine toys.

TL;DR: This was the Transformers movie to watch for Peter Cullen. I know it might seem like a disappointment to Ashleigh for her Peter Cullen tribute to see Prime die in the first 30 minutes of the movie but I really feel as if this was the right call over and of the micheal bay movies. I was only 9 in 1986, turning 10 in November. Prime and all the other Autobots dying was very upsetting to me but it also gave me Rodimus Prime which since it was clear Hot Rod was the new hero somehow made it okay. The Bay movies turned Prime into a pansy who couldn't stand up to Megatron, where this movie he may have died, but he took out 60% of the enemy including Megatron more or less solo. He did indeed have the Touch, he had the Power. In the Bay movies he might at best have herpies.

Ashleigh you are correct Optimus was one of the biggest characters. This movie pisssed off a lot of kids by killing him early on which is why I recommended starting with the live action movies. This ended the original transformers catoon tv series.

I would say watch the first of the newer movies, and then decide if you think you want to continue with the franchise

I’d say it’s worth a watch at least once. The first one was actually pretty damn good. Two was alright, and would have probably been better if the writers strike didn’t happen. And we did eventually end up getting Bumblebee, and Rise of The Beasts, which were both pretty decent. The live actions aren’t perfect, but there were a few good attempts.

Peter Cullen was also the voice of Eeyore from The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Monterey Jack in Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers, among so many other voice roles that anyone growing up in the 80's and 90's know. He was an amazing person as well and based his performance of Optimus Prime off of his brother Larry who served in Vietnam. He gave him this advice to voice Prime: "Be strong enough, to be gentle."

Oh yeah, I can literally hear that Eeyore in my ear right now. The one from the 80's tv show and the early 80's short where Eeyore has a Birthday and Piglet's red balloon pops. And they play... did you ever see this short? They play a game in the river water with sticks and they call it something very suggestive and bizarre.
