LEGEND POLL

it has come to my attention that there two different cuts for legend for Tim Curry

Theatrical is easier to access for the majority but I know some directors cut have more stuff and are more widely loved.

It has come to my attention that you haven't watched Practical Magic...

You should still put the movie Oscar on a poll sometime. How can you go wrong in a movie with Sylvester Stallone and Tim Curry? Can't wait to see Legend!

Oscar Tip -- keep up with the bag.

Theatrical version! I have watched the directors cut and the lack of Tangerine Dream somehow really made the experience blah. - Tanks for asking our opinion Ashley!

I know people tease the synth as 80s, but regardless if it is, it absolutely is, within this composition and context, it just sounds non-human and otherwordly.

The rarest occasion I would say theatrical. Because none of the changes of the cuts is worth taking TANGERINE DREAM SOUNDTRACK out. It completes the fae vibe. Its a slightly different cut, but not a meaningful change worth losing the ethereal soundtrack. Actually the chase scene between goblins and unicorns is kinda odd timing and recycled cuts. There's only been 2 movies I say stick to theatrical. This is one!!! For your first experience and channel.... Please experience TANGERINE DREAM

The biggest difference is the music. If you love your 80s synth new wave, definitely go with theatrical.

I love the movie Legend, it's been one of my favorite films since I was like 12. I also think that the Director's Cut is the better version of the film. That being said, I think that Ashleigh should watch the theatrical version. The theatrical version is the one that most people saw originally because it is the one that came out in theaters in 1986 and was available on video and rerun on cable for years. The theatrical version is the one that I saw that rewrote my brain chemistry when I was 12. The Director's Cut was released when the film was first released on DVD in the early 2000's. It was the result of some film assets that were believed to have been lost back when the producers cut them out of the film because they thought it would make the film more marketable, being located and edited back into the film. The Director's Cut expands on a few things and explains a few things that the theatrical version leaves a little vague, has slightly different versions of some scenes, and it has a completely different score. Since Ashleigh's entire idea is watching older films to see how they hold up and see if she gets what people loved about them, I think that it makes the most sense for her to watch the version that most people who love this movie fell in love with. If I could make a bold suggestion, perhaps a thing to do might be do the reaction to the theatrical version and, *if she likes the film well enough*, watch the Director's Cut later and do a follow up giving her thoughts on how they compare.

Gotta go with theatrical. The Tangerine Dream score was AMAZING!! The director’s cut was okay and so was Jerry Goldsmith’s score. But I grew up with the theatrical version.

There's also the European Theatrical Cut

The director's cut is more interesting except for music for Mia Sara's black dress music.

Ashleigh hasn't had a good track record with fantasy; she didn't enjoy The Never Ending Story, Labyrinth or The Lord of the Rings. So we need to consider that when voting. The director's cut is the way the movie was intended to be seen; it fleshes out the characters better, includes the orchestral score and generally gives Ashleigh more time in this fantasy realm, which she may hate and have to endure. On the other hand, the theatrical version cuts some stuff, moves faster and replaces the score; but she may feel the story is lacking and want more.

Hey, I know that this has been a long, painful and rough few weeks for everyone and I know that this isn’t the proper place to put this comment but I didn’t know where else it could go. It seems that unfortunately thus far Tim Curry wasn’t the last legend/icon to pass away this week. Robert Cullen who was the voice of many Generation X, Xennials, and Millenials has also sadly left us today. He was the voice actor of many beloved characters, but specifically Optimus Prime from Transformers, Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh and so many others. The music composer from Transformers Nick Glennie-Smith has also died (8/16/26), singer Shelly Fabre on 8/22, and the actor from the film: Menace II Society- Samuel Monroe Jr. has also died today to round out these last horrible few weeks. As a Xennial I am tapping out for this week because I am exhausted and beyond sad of all the amazing individuals who have left us all. RIP to them all and condolences to all of their loved ones. 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🩵🩵🩵🪽🪽🪽🪽🪽🪽🪽🪽🪽🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️

Speaking of In Memory reviews... Let's get Ashleigh to watch Transformers The Movie, in honor of Peter Cullen...

Honestly, should do both

e
evil_incarnate · August 27, 2026

Directors cut...because I've never seen it and didn't know of it. Given it was Ridley Scott though, I guess I should have.

J
James Sharp · August 27, 2026

Please go with the theatrical cut. Like you said, not a lot of people have access to the director's cut. And everyone should be able to enjoy this classic.

B
Brandon Collins · August 27, 2026

Here's the deal. In almost every single case, Ridley Scott's Director's/Final Cuts are better than the theatrical cuts. The only time that I can remember where the theatrical cut is probably better is with Alien, because the studio just threw the "Director's Cut" label on it for the 25th anniversary re-release. Scott has said that the theatrical cut for Alien is actually the one he likes, while the other is merely an alternative cut. Legend was a film that was re-appraised by critics in a very favorable way when the director's cut was released. I like both, but I'd go with what Ridley prefers in this case.

M
MertzRocks · August 28, 2026

Totally agree with Ridley about Alien. Studio suits have DKS syndrome. (don't know...)

J
Jason Espinoza · August 27, 2026

Theatrical version just for the score! Tangerine Dream!

J
Jassell B · August 27, 2026

Google - "The director's cut of Ridley Scott's Legend (1985) is generally considered better for the story, but the choice largely depends on whether you prefer a cohesive narrative or an atmospheric synth soundtrack"......whatever that means. I think it's better to see what the general audience saw and remembers - Theatrical.

C
Casi · August 27, 2026

This is gonna sound so wrong given the music but....I find the director's cut to be more....hokey?

C
Chelsea A. · August 27, 2026

Theatrical is what I first watched and with that Tangerine Dream soundtrack is just magical. Please watch that version ~

T
The Cross Examiner Podcadt · August 27, 2026

It's such a bad movie, I vote for whichever is shorter! :-)

M
Marco Costa · August 27, 2026

I always go with the DC in any movie. I actually own both versions, but i understand that it's more easy for you to get the theatrical.

E
Echo Moon · August 27, 2026

Director's cut for sure. The theatrical cut replaced the original composer's music with Tangerine Dream, a rock group, and it just changes the feel of the movie making it less good IMO. The original music was done by Jerry Goldsmith who has always said he thought it was his best work. The producers changed it to try to appeal to the younger crowd. IMO the original music was leaps and bounds better. There are also a few deleted moments in the director's cut that help with understanding a few things.

C
Chris Crowther · August 27, 2026

They were more electronica than rock by that point; prog rock was more their earlier work.

T
Ted Little · August 27, 2026

My preference will always be for the theatrical cut. That was the movie that was shown to the original audience, the film that succeeded at the box office, and the film that the producers (the people how hire the directors) wanted shown.

C
Chris Crowther · August 27, 2026

Directors are the creative owners of the film. I literally couldn’t care less what the producers think most the time: producers are why films get massacred to the point that directors ask for their name to be taken off them.

J
Jeb Manning · August 27, 2026

The only reason I'd suggest director's cut is because it spoils how Tim Curry is supposed to look. If you watch the movie, when the he's mostly kept secret. When is it does reveal him, it's treated like some big moment. Except that the theatrical spoils how he looks in the opening.

M
Matthew King · August 27, 2026

Both versions has their merits. Both a worth a watch. I would say go theatrical like how most of us first watched it. Then plan on director's cut a little later.

C
CRockey12 · August 27, 2026

I agree, I didn't see the director's cut until I bought it on DVD. I'm still obsessed with the black dress. Lol

N
Nathan Anderson · August 27, 2026

For your first time, I'd go with Theatrical. But I'm an 80's kid...

E
Erin Bucknell · August 27, 2026

The soundtrack on the theatrical just really encapsulates the 80s-ness of the movie.

L
Lynette Cummins · August 27, 2026

I say go with the Theatrical version. You don't need extras, that is how we all originally saw it.

M
Michael Parker · August 27, 2026

Sooooo...(*danger* it's about to get super geeky in here!!!) - the biggest difference is the soundtrack. My preference is 'Tangerine Dream', but others may have different opinions.

L
Lynette Cummins · August 27, 2026

I agree. I prefer Tangerine Dream.

V
Veronica Banda · August 27, 2026

The directors cut adds contexts to a lot of things that are otherwise confusing

T
The Rose In the Library · August 28, 2026

Nahhhh let her be confused to synth pop as the marketing gods of the 80s intended lol
