WATCH ALONG: Top Gun Maverick

Ashley-- It's immensely fun to (re)watch the movies of my teens with you (obviously, this movie is much newer), mostly from seeing you enjoy them, too. But I have to say, "Why does she have the Austin Powers car?" is the single-most Millenial thing I've heard you say. 馃槀馃ぃ馃槀 (I think you were thinking of the James Bond Aston Martin roadster that Austin Powers spoofed? Penny's car is actually a Porsche 911, which is a call-back to Charlie's Porsche in the original Top Gun.) Please keep doin' what you're doin. 馃槃
Sadly, an ex-friend ruined this movie for me and now I desperately want to do the watch along, but can't because of the bad feelings. 馃ズ
BOB!! We love Bob!! That is Bill Pullman's (Lone Star in Spaceballs) son! He was Bob/The Void/Sentry in Thunderbolts. Yeah that's how Val really talked at the end. :( You will absolutely love Mission Impossible and The Bourne Identity. Maybe you need an action poll for Franchise Friday?
What do you call a sheep, covered in a sheet of plastic? "LAMB-inated" (I couldn't watch the movie, so dis all i got)
I have always been a huge fan of the original Top Gun (1986). I was 11 when it came out and have watched it at least 200+ times! It's in my Top 5 of all time! Top Gun: Maverick is even better! I'm obsessed! I'd like to add some movie trivia.... Penny Benjamin is an Admiral's daughter that Maverick had an on-again, off-again relationship with. She was mentioned twice in the first Top Gun movie. First, by Goose in Stinger's office and then by Goose's wife, Carole, while they are in the barb-q restaurant singing 'Great Balls of Fire'. Yes, Rooster (Miles Teller) plays piano and sings in this movie! 'Great Balls of Fire' is even on the soundtrack! He was incredible on the drums in Whiplash (2014)... so talented! He also plays saxophone, guitar, and trumpet, and is a great dancer, too! He is definitely my favorite new pilot.... Goose is my favorite from the first movie. I do have to say though, I love me some Phoenix and Bob, and yes, Bob (Lewis Pullman) is Bill Pullman's son! Tom put all of the pilot actors through 4 months of flight training so that by the time they got into the F-18, they could handle it. Also, the Navy required them to pass underwater survival training before they could fly. One of the tests was to get strapped into a seat in a simulated jet, in full gear, and blindfolded, Then they would drop the jet into the water and they had to find their way out. They needed the actors to be ready if there were ever a problem. The real fighter pilots that worked with the actors said they thought for sure at least one actor would drop out... but none did! They all got sick flying in the jets, even Tom.... except for Phoenix! She's a badass! There were a few times during the movie I got emotional, but Rooster's last line "It's what my Dad would've done" just broke me! My brother was crying, too... even my husband got choked up!! I saw it in the theater 3 times! I waited 36 years for that sequel! It was worth every second of it!! The woman who played Iceman's wife, Sarah (Jean Louisa Kelly) was also the older sister Tia in Uncle Buck (1989), and she also played Rowena Morgan in Mr. Holland's Opus (1995)! One last thing... That P-52 plane Tom was flying at the end of the movie is actually Tom's! He became a pilot after the first Top Gun movie and has been flying ever since! That was really him and Jennifer Connelly flying around up there... she HATES to fly.... she said she couldn't say no to Tom Cruise! LOL! Loved your reaction so much!!! I've been waiting since you watched the first movie for you to watch this one! Is now the right time to tell you they're making Top Gun 3 now, and due to come out in 2028... Thanks for sharing your reactions with us, I love them so much!! You made my night!
Of course Pullman is called Bob!
His father also played "Bob" in A League of Their Own (1992). He was the husband of Dottie Henson (Gena Davis)!
I was lucky to see this in the theaters and was awesome! I had a great time with this reaction! I just wanted to say that all of the in cockpit camera shots were from 2 seater aircraft. The actors/actresses were shown how to setup the camera that were pointed as themselves. It makes it just so much better because you can see the g-forces in their faces. Such a great film.
I just rewatched your Top Gun watch along and was surprised when I couldn鈥檛 find this one, thinking you鈥檇 already seen it. The timing on this was too perfect. Thank you and as always, such a great reaction. I love this movie!
This movie is amazing! I grew up with Top Gun so we were so excited when this came out and it delivered everything and more than it should have. Glad you enjoyed it so much!
Joanna Pettet, best known for Casino Royale (1967), has died. I hope Ashleigh watches the film because, not only is it a spoof of the James Bond franchise, but it has the humor Ashleigh likes. It is a funny movie like Blazing Saddles, Loaded Weapon, Airplane, and Top Secret!
Not to rain on the parade but if it's not someone Ashleigh has already heard of (despite being unfamiliar with their work) then they're probably not going to get a tribute. Many of the people who died during her birthday month who are more famous will probably not be getting a tribute. It's not to say she's undeserving or it's not worth suggesting, but definitely lower your expectations if you couldn't walk down the street, say the name, and have most people recognize it.
