EARLY ACCESS: All the President's Men

The craziest thing is this movie came out 2 years after Watergate happened. Robert Redford was very interested in the story and followed it religiously. I believe he was also in contact with Woodward and Bernstein as they were writing their book and asked if it could be optioned into a movie.

Watergate shocked a nation in the 70s. The US population as a whole was more trusting then of politicians and media. And of course it was exploited afterward - never let a crisis go to waste - therefore it was used as a symbol of political corruption. Remember, back then information only flowed one way - there were no independent sources, unlike today. The crimes and corruption of Watergate is miniscule child's play compared to what has been going on for the last thirty years. Bad actors both foreign and domestic learned important lessons from that era about shaping public opinion, exploiting institutions and now digital access, testing the limits of what the public would tolerate, and how easy corruption and power is.
