Just to note; Dr. Owens is generally considered one of the "good guys." He wasn't directly involved when Eleven was under Dr. Brenner's care, and he later tried to help by forging a birth certificate so Hopper could adopt her and keep her hidden. He attempts to make amends for the damage caused by Hawkins Lab, even if it does not always succeed. As for Eleven, she did ultimately open the Gate. Although she was manipulated and amplified by the lab to make contact with the Demogorgon, that connection and her scream created the rift between our world and the Upside Down. In that sense, Eleven may be the only person capable of closing it permanently.
100%, came here to say the same. Dr. Brenner (Papa) is the bad doctor, Dr. Owen’s is a good guy, he caught on to what was going on early and he’s been trying to protect Eleven all along. He’s also in danger himself. And yes Lucas has been a double agent and sticking close to Jason and the gang so he would know what they were doing and so he could warn Eddie and his gang and throw them off the trail.
Lucas lied to the guys from the beginning. He led them to Hopper's old cabin.
