FIRST TIME WATCHING: Buffy the Vampire Slayer S1E8

Seen Buffy a bunch of times, but I only noticed this little detail (maybe unintended) on this latest watch. Giles corrects Ms. Calendar's spelling of the Circle of Kayless, saying "Kayless, with a K". It struck me that this might be an extremely subtle writing flourish, as "Kayless" could be heard as "K-less" (meaning, "without a K"), in which case the phrase "K-less, with a K" would be an oxymoron. It could definitely be an unintended coincidence, but Buffy is full of little bits of clever writing, and I'm sure most TV writers are literary nerds, so it could very well be a subtle joke that I've never caught until now.

Ive been following you on YouTube for years, but it's only Buffy that has me subscribed to Patreon. Its a brilliant show and other than Season 1, I think it's aged like wine, especially the spin off.

Yep this is my least favorite, pretty much out of all 7 seasons. I do hope you continue after season 1 because part of why Joss made the show was to subvert troupes. In order to subvert them though they do need to be present in the story. On the matter of reading the tag lines do as you wish, I read some and watched previews when I watched it on TV.

This episode is actually great 😭 Hilarious ending shot, reasonable takes on internet dating, SICK practical villain suit and MS CALENDAR, DIVAAA!!! I forgot she was introduced this early 🥹 such a great character and her and Giles’ back and forth is some of my fav tbh “Technopagan” is still a hilariously ridiculous term and almost never comes up again. I think they just needed an excuse for how she could perform an online exorcism 😅 One thing I love about Buffy is how funny and campy it is with moments like Buffy’s hair being frazzled after getting shocked, etc, but also has genuinely dark moments of horror. Like when the computer started writing Dave’s “suicide” note for him, that’s scary af 😭 AND WILLOW WAS HAVING HER MOMENT OKAY!!

Kind of interesting how much Moloch in this reminded me of Ultron in Age of Ultron

Robia LaMorte, the person who plays, Ms Calendar, years prior to this role, was one of the 2 women who accompanied Prince during the Diamonds and Pearls era as dancers. They were in his music videos, like in the vid, Cream, and they went on tour with Prince, and were even his spokesperson for a time. She left dancing eventually, and turned to acting.

I checked log lines for season 2 and the ones you wouldn't want to read are E10, 14, 17, 21, and 22. Those will spoil major plot points that are separate from the "monster of the week" deal. Also E06 is really funny, "Halloween". Perfect time to watch this series, I think you'll get a lot more followers from it and the camp remains but the story gets deep. Special effects/fight choreography is astronomically better s3 and perfected starting season 4. And you'll definitely get invested in the character development! Thanks for watching Buffy!!

can i ask what platform youre watching the series on. you mentioned the square formating of older tv in the first reaction but on Disney plus its the wide screen remaster and id rather watch along in the orignal format. id dont know if theres as atreamer that has the original format

I’ve not usually a fan of reactions to shiny new movies and shows but as a long time resident of Savannah, GA and a mild fan of the Cape Fear films…I’d kinda be jazzed to see a reaction to the new series on Apple TV. It stars Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson.

Every Buffy fan was saddened to hear about the passing of Anthony Head. He was such a great actor and brought the character of Giles to life. We also saw his range in Ted Lasso where he was the ruthless Rupert. Looking forward to your reaction today Nat.
