I first seen this guy in The A-Team! My favorite character in the movie. You should check it out, if you haven't yet already.
Another interesting fact about District 9 is that many of the props and CGI designs are repurposed from Neill Blomkamp's cancelled Halo film.
The grave lift effects make me sad to do this day.
FYI Nat - this movie was filmed on a $30m budget and went on to make $211m
This was Sharlto Copley's first role. He said he never wanted to act ever again, because the working conditions were dangerous and taxing on his body and emotions. They filmed in a real evicted slum, the whole place smelled like rotting meat, and that cat food he ate was boiled chicken in mayo and tuna salad. Sharlto throwing that can was actual frustration because that scene took multiple takes. Great he didnt quit though, because even if a movie is terrible, he gives 100% in whatever role he's in.
We still wait for District 10, it is way over 3 years, actualy way over 15 years 😄 If you liked this you might also like ”Elysium”, also directed by Neill Blomkamp, and featuring Matt Damon, and Sharlto Copley (Wikus) in a different role this time. Fun facts: - District 9 evolved from a very successful short movie by Neill Blomkamp ”Alive in Joburg” that is entirely mockumentary style, and you can find it on youtube; - Sharlto Copley (Wikus) first role was in this movie, he never acted before, except in the short film „Alive in Joburg”. He was cast in it by his friend Neill Blomkamp; - District 9 was the first documentary-style film to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar.
Glad you got a chance to watch this. I think some of his other films are worth watching like Chappie and Elysium. I haven't seen Demonic or Gran Turismo.
Deserves a real sequel, but I don't think they could pull it off in a tasteful way.
This could definitely have won Best Picture if the Academy wasn't so reluctant to reward science fiction (although at least it was nominated). The special effects category was also robbed by Avatar. Shame Neill Blompkamp has failed to replicate his success with subsequent films.
I agree that it could've won best picture but you can't really say it was robbed by avatar. Avatar's effects were revolutionary for their time it literally pushed the industry forwards.
Happy Feature Friday Nat. I haven't seen this one since the cinema. I remember seeing all the Humans Only posters all over the bus shelters and phone boxes when it was out. Look forward to watching it again over the weekend with you 😊
