FIRST TIME WATCHING: Predator: Badlands

In the old Dark Horse Predator comics (that Dan Trachtenberg is finally acknowledging in his films helping retcon and fix lore) female Yautja (YAW-t-juh) are meaner and fiercer than the males. I love he sets up Dek's mom as the next potential big bad. We deserve to see a badass female Predator on film. And yes, the females stay away from males... males annoy them and the males rightfully fear them. Females chose their mates, and like mantids, whether the male survives or not depends on how hungry or blood thirsty she may be. Hunts and trophies are the way males show their worth. Females have no need for hunts, but may do so for ishts and giggles or reassert their dominance.

I was hesitant about this one when I heard it was PG13, what a mistake. I know they got away with the PG13 rating because there's no humans in the film, hence no blood, no human violence.

I feel like for general audiences that never saw a Predator movie before and started with this, it'd score very high. But for one's who've seen how dark former one's went and then popped into this movie its jarring at the fam friendliness of it all lol, that's why some don't like it. They feel its a shell of how Predators movies should be--hard R type events etc. I'm not hardcore about it either way kinda indifferent, just a decent summer popcorn type movie 🍿

I think this is a great movie, and I knew Natalie would have fun with it. I think it's main strength is the creature/world design. Like the Luna Bug and the Kalisk. The Thia 1/2 Legs-1/2 Torso fight was really creative, and there were some very cool "oh shit" moments too. And they also did some subtle things they didn't have to - like when Dek throws the exploding bug and cut to his expression of, "Huh. Cool.". Which you gotta admit is pretty awesome for the effects guys to pull off. And also when Thia was trying to do a retinal scan, and it wasn't working, and she rubs her eye to a "squeeky-squeeky-squeek" window rubbing sound effect. Subtle, but funny as hell! Also - Natalie - when she said he was all "Dek'ed out". Yes. Yes he was Natalie.

"Some of this seems like it would be filmed in New Zealand". Whoa, great catch Natalie. The whole movie was filmed in New Zealand.

I'm with DJLow on this one. I really liked Prey and thought this was disappointing. It felt very Disneyfied to me. I'll be a little more generous and give it a 6/10 but I won't be watching along today, I saw it too recently. But glad that it seems like you enjoyed it!

Happy Feature Friday Nat. After the masterpiece that was Prey, I have to admit that this movie underwhelmed me and I didn't think much of it. A very generic sci-fi story with a predator as the main character, with a story that is designed to join the IPs and set-up the inevitable reboot of Alien vs Predator. Prey was a 10/10 movie for me, but this movie was a 5/10, and that's me being generous 😅 Have an awesome weekend Nat 😊

Please put Predator: Killer of Killers on an animated poll list next lol
