I'm very late to the party here, just finished watching the show. It's been at least 20 years since I read the book and I'd still hold it in my top 10. Its rare in a book where I end up liking pretty much every Character and how they are portrayed. It's easy to love a character like Toranaga or Hiromatsu.. but the book did really well with even Yabu. Sure he was a piece of shit, but at the end you have to kind of respect him. If anyone who liked the show but hasn't read the book should definitely give it a go! Overall I think the show did great. High praise for the depiction of Mariko and Fuji, just damn. Blackthorn and Rodrigues were also done really well. If I had any fault it might be a little more depth with Father Alvito and possibly really just leaving Kiku out the story but they still got the main points across.. it's only 10 episode TV show so I completely dig it lol. Well done!
Very much enjoyed watching this show with you. My top show of 2024, most likely.
Also, there were two really beautiful callbacks in this episode that I loved: first, "Why tell a dead man the future?" is what Yabushige said to his nephew regarding informing Torunaga about John's ship, so that let's Yabushige know that Torunaga has ALWAYS been in the loop on his double dealing shenanigans. Second, "Let your hands be the last to hold her" shows how much Mariko saying almost exactly the same thing meant to Fujisama when her child was about to die. Such great writing.
Yeah, to add to what some others have said, John saying "fuck it. We live and we die" before trying to take his life in protest was him letting go of the dream of dying an old man in England still holding Mariko's rosary surrounded by grandchildren. The historical figure that John is based on never went back to England and was buried in Japan.
Loved this series! Unfortunate it's not as popular and will be relegated to your 2nd channel. But we appreciate you watching it with us! Now it may be time for Fallout? Okie Dokie!
It's time to crawl out to the Fallout.
I can't wait for you to watch Fallout!
Echoing the people suggesting fallout! also Loki S2 or The Bear 🙏
I don't think the flash fowards to Blackthorne are really flash fowards...they're an idea Blackthorne had of who he would become. But all of that has changed because of his journey here...and because of Lady Mariko. And Toranaga. When he turns before he attempts to commit seppukku--the moment you thought there was going to be an earthquake--this is him turning to face and cast out that idea of himself as he commits to something larger than himself. This, and him tossing Mariko's crucifix into the sea. Blackthorne is reborn Anjin, I think, after this.
BARRY
I don’t interpret the “flash forwards” as actual flash forwards, but rather as a dream that he was holding on to, which he finally let go of the moment he decided to sacrifice himself for Ajiro. At that point he no longer has a dream of his own and is fully loyal to Toronaga. I don’t think Toronaga intends to let him leave Japan. A second point-I think the actual historical character Mariko was based on actual did write the line “flowers are only flowers because they fall” in her death poem. I enjoyed watching it!!
The scenes of an old John Blackthorne in bed back in Europe were dreams or visions he was having rather than actual flash forwards. It represents his quest for glory to fight in a war against the Portuguese in some far off land, but he now saw himself troubled and in anguish on his deathbed as his personal connection with Mariko and the people there became more important than his "small war". He experienced them when he was knocked out from the blast and then it flashed in his mind when he decided to give it up and kill himself. The real life person he was based on William Allen was never permitted to leave Japan and served Tokugawa (real life Tobanara) till his death. He took on a wife and had children in Japan though he did send money back to his previous wife and children.
I was a big fan of the novel and believe the old man scenes are dreams of the other life he could have had. Wiliam Adams who's life the anjin is based on never returned home and served the first shogun
Yeah.. a lot of people didn't understand those scenes. But the episode title also hints to that.
Really really loved this show, glad you reacted to it, even if mostly for Patreon folks.
Ok now that it’s over can anyone recommend this new Shogun when compared to the original miniseries? I’ve been reluctant to give it a shot because I couldn’t imagine it coming close but there’s been a lot of praise
Still highly recommended as there are quite a few differences between the two. The 80s series was much more focused on John Blackthorne's character and had to focus on scenes and characters where English (Portuguese) was being spoken as they didn't have subtitles. The '24 version is more focused on all the other characters having many scenes with only Japanese being spoken. The tone is also very different, as it focuses more on Toranaga and the political struggles, it has a darker tone with tension throughout the series rather than the brighter more positive tone of discovering and showcasing a foreign world. And otherwise the original book had some historically incorrect stuff that the 80s miniseries kept as it was adapting the books, the '24 corrects many of these as it attempts to show that time period in a more historically authentic way.
This community watched the X-men movie series together, let’s top it off with X-men 97.
While I agree that would be great, it would require Nat to watch the 90's series to understand what's going on and I'm not sure if that would interest her. But who knows.
Loved this series. Hopefully we get Legends of Vox Machina next:))
Should Nat "crawl out, through the Fallout" next?
I wouldn't want her to set the world on fire ;)
Hi Nat, really looking forward to this Season Finalie. Thanks for the great content..
Fallout series next? :)
Happy Tuesday Nat. Been looking forward to this all day. Time to see how it all plays out 😊 Well that's another show gone. Sorry, I couldn't resist Nat 😊 It's been such an amazing one, with so many interesting characters and incredible performances. After Toranaga's initial show of force to his rivals, it turned out to be more about a battle of wits than bloodshed on the battlefield. A perfect finale for this series. Thanks for watching this incredible show here on your channel Nat. I have really enjoyed watching along with you 💛
