Here is a little insight - while stationed on a troop ship in Asia in the early 80s, we had the same incident happen were inbound aircrafts, from another country was heading for our battle group. We were working out (P.T.) on deck and when our aircraft carrier launched birds to intercept and they broadcast thru out our ship so we all could hear- our jets traveled by my ship doing supersonic, where you saw the jets pass by 1st and then heard the boom of the sound which shook the ship. Our guys forced the other aircrafts to leave our battle group area, which was about 150miles out.
Really enjoyed watching this with you Natalie! So much fun experiencing this movie again. Watched for the first time as a youngster and fell in love with it then. xD I have so many positive memories with this one. :D
Highly recommend watching Top Gun Maverick.
Ah man Natalie I came so close so close to being able to watch both you and the movie all on my iPhone. But every time I try and play the movie it paused your reaction video. So I need to figure out a way how to hear both of them at the same time? I was able to take the bar on the iPhone lift it up and the video minimizes and you can place it anywhere on your iPhone while browsing and doing other stuff on your iPhone. I came so close.
i have two phones for this, my old iphone and the new one i got after my upgrade at my phone company, or even maybe a desktop or laptop if you have it, i had the same problem doing it on one device only, maybe this helps, idk, hope you figure it out
What killed goose was when he ejected he went head first right into the canopy and it killed him instantly. Those seats eject at 200 mph. Im honestly surprised at the amount of reactors who dont notice this in the film. This is something that happened in real life with the first Gen F-14s where the canopy would come off way to slow occasionally. Fun fact too, the navy actually shot off two missiles for this movie. Just know going into top gun Maverick that 90% of is of actual stunts and flying and the actors went though flight training to withstand the Gs while being flown around to do their lines.
the scene itself is too fast, that’s why people who don’t know anything about pilots or their planes don’t understand what happened
Can someone please help me how do I do split screen so I can watch the movie along with Natalie on my iPhone?
How do I watch along with you all on my iPhone. Right now I am watching on a companies Desktop while volunteering at their front office.
I have a copy of the Movie from Xfinity which is on Apple TV. I also can access the movie from PARAMOUNT+ and PRIME. I know I need to watch this with you while you are Live but how do I watch along with you after you are no longer Live?
Ok now I understand better cuz all I see is the timer and the movie in the background is blurring and I can only hear you.
You should get and use the same Camera that Tyler uses for his work when he does filming projects.
So glad we can now vote for Top Gun Maverick!
Really fun watch. I hadn’t seen it in a while. Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you watch the sequel.
Great Reaction. The song on the jukebox at the end is the same song he sang to her the first night in the bar.
To answer one of your questions about how often do deadly accidents happen during non combat, is more often then people think..but not like an alarming amount, I remember my first deployment the air wing that was attached to my unit lost 3 pilots just on training missions, we weren’t even in country yet..and my next deployment they lost 2.
I swear every time Nat has a feeling a character will die... they die! lol She's got the 6th sense haha
Top Gun: Maverick is sooooo good and it's much less romance centered which I found very pleasing since I didn't really like it in the first one.
I’m not interested in this movie at all really, but I’m SO fascinated by the sequel - I still haven’t seen it but I’ve heard even people who think the first one is a bad movie say that Top Gun: Maverick is amazing 😂 like HOW
I will never understand how anyone can think the first one is bad :D Might not be the worlds finest movie but it's just pure 80's cheesy entertainment
I do feel like it's time for a spoof of Top Gun....Hot Shots with Charlie Sheen.
For sure watch the second movie. Another great 80's movie is Best of the Best.
This is one of my favorite films Val Kilmer is in. Willow is another, and my favorite for him is in Tombstone. Anyone else wanna see Nat react to Tombstone or Willow? Western and Fantasy polls, respectively.
Willow is a great movie, and I love The Ghost and The Darkness. Val gives an amazing performance. A great one for Nat's 2nd channel would be the 1996 version of The Island of Doctor Moreau, where Val was most definitely going through his difficult period. He threw out his script, showed up on set whenever he wanted to and made up his own dialogue as he went along 😅
Nat, it was a known issue that in the original F-14A had a problem with ejections. When the RIO pulled the ejection handles (they make a point to show Maverick unable to pull them himself) the canopy charges malfunction and ejected the REO early and before the pilot. The issue was fixed in later versions of the F-14. Another major factor in that incident was another known issue: the original F-14A engine's propensity to flame out when there was a compressor stall from another jet's prop wash. To fix the issue the F-14B model was given a different engine that solved the problem and provided a bit more thrust.
Just to add more specifics, in a flat spin as exhibited in the movie, the canopy would get caught in the air bubble above the jet and float there for a few seconds. It was the RIO's job to eject the canopy manually and watch for it to clear, then pull the ejection handle otherwise they get Goose'd. That's why Maverick says "Watch the canopy". This was based on a real situation but IIRC the RIO didn't die IRL. RIP Goose though he was the best. I hope you watch the sequel too Nat, the action shots in that were so awesome I am so glad I got to see it in IMAX! Hopefully it shows well on the small screen!
Definitely watch Top Gun: Maverick ASAP. It's a moral imperative.
You have to do Top Gun: Maverick, it's so good.
So a little tech-babble to hopefully help with your knowledge and understanding: Because this film was produced smack dab in the middle of the cold war, they had to use aircraft that they had access to to simulate the Migs. Real Mig designations (at least from a NATO perspective) are always ODD numbers, Mig 21, Mig 25, Mig 29 and so on Part of the way they faked having migs in the film was to use the designation Mig 28. The actual aircraft are american F-5 Es and Fs (the E's are the single seat, F's are 2 seaters), painted black and affixed with a soviet style red star on the tail. F-5s at this time WERE in fact used to simulate soviet aircraft at the real Top Gun school. The other aggressor aircraft were A-4s which were also used to simulate enemy aircraft during that period of time. Both of these types of aircraft were comparatively small and low tech compared to the F 14s, but, as noted in the film, they are fairly maneuverable and in the hands of highly skilled pilots, they provided a real challenge to the Navy pilots learning the cutting edge flying that the Fighter Weapons School is there to impart. I know you recognized some of the other actors during the film. Hopefully James Tolkan, the carrier CAG, was one of them. He played the high school principal in the Back to the Future trilogy. The guy who played Slider, (Iceman's RIO) was Rick Rossovich. You've seen him in at least one other film. He played the boyfriend of Sarah Connor's roommate in the Terminator. You've also seen Clarence Gilyard, in the first Die Hard, he was the black computer nerd in charge of breaking into the vault.
The way you said Goose will die in the beginning and then asked about the training accidents made me tense up the whole time. RIP Goose!! Top Gun Maverick a must!
Through the whole reaction, Nat was like foreshadowing Goose's death. I was thinking, "Has she actually seen this and forgotten about it? Because that totally sounds like something Natalie could do." When she said, "Goose will probably never fly with him again" I was like... .well... score one for you, you are absolutely correct.
I am not an action-junkie movie fan, I prefer more cerebral stories. But if Top Gun was "a lot of fun" for you, Top Gun: Maverick will feel like you're actually in the plane. Maverick is about as good as a movie like that can possibly be. Even my hushed librarian of a soul was stirred a bit by it. Just a bit. But that's a lot more than most movies (I'm looking at you, Fast and Furious) get from me.
Top Gun/Starship Troopers is an incredible double feature so I hope ST wins the poll.
This was great! Val Kilmer took a bunch of photos and videos during this shoot. So, it has cool home movie view of some of it. I hope you see Top Gun 2. But, I really hope you have time off-line to watch the movie "Val" (2021). It is narrated by his son (who sounds eerily like Val (who had throat cancer and can't really speak anymore). It is totally worth it to learn more about Val and what he was really like behind the scenes.
Let’s just say a lot of babies were born in February of 1987 after couples saw Top Gun together in May of 1986. That Take My Breath Away scene combined with that Risky Business scene is what made Cruise a sex symbol in the 80s.
Nat: "Tyler sent me this video and he told me to watch it." Me: "I'll bet it's the Tarantino thing--" Nat: "...something to do with Quentin Tarantino explains Top Gun." Me: "THERE it is..." Yes, you should 100% watch Top Gun: Maverick, it cuts down a lot of the cheese and the special effects are AMAZING, with a huge emphasis on practical effects. ALSO if you're up for a laugh, Hot Shots is a direct parody of Top Gun, starring Charlie Sheen.
Yep, as soon as she said Tyler sent a video I thought "Here we go" lol
You don't see much of him, but Merlin is played by Tim Robbins.
Only pointing this out because of your username but at 6’5 Robbins’ is technically too tall to be a Navy pilot.
Goose got ejected headfirst into the the glass canopy of the aircraft.
Aircraft canopies are not made of glass. A bit nit-picky but im a pilot
Made me so happy watching Nat react to Top Gun. Now I'm eager to see Top Gun Maverick
The "I don't think they'll ever fly together again" as Goose's lifeless body was being hoisted into the helicopter was pretty brutal to watch. Nat spent quite a bit of time in the "denial" phase of grief lol. Loved the reaction!
Nat..."You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'" is the song Maverick and Goose used in the bar at the beginning when trying to pick up Charlie. I think that is why it was used at the end.
I know right how did she not get that!
No the ubibrow was never in lol
I do hope you watch the 2nd on Nat after watching this, it is really good. I think I enjoyed it more than the first one and I saw the first one back when it was released, back then it was AMAZING!
I sooo hope you watch the next one! It is amazing!!!!
Im so Happy you're watching this, and having lots of fun
You were talking and missed the part where Goose's head hit the top of the flight shield when he ejected.
Nat just FYI Goose died because when they ejected his head smashed into the canopy since it didn't blow off all the way and he broke his neck.
Loved this! Can’t wait for the TG Maverick reaction!
So much to say about this awesome reaction! First +1 to Top Gun:Maverick. Just do it. We all would love it. You will love it. All of the callbacks will be fresh in your mind. Engage! I also knew that when Natalie watch this she would be crying by the end. It wasn't all vroom vroom pew pew pew Air Force propaganda and recruitment film. I loved Nat's reaction to the music, and pretty much anything to do with Tom and Kelly's romance in the movie. But! Don't Forget Penny Benjamin Natalie! Tell me if you like this one Nat: When Maverick says, "Talk to me, Goose" in the end fight, how about if they would have put in, "Do some of that pilot shit, Mav!" That would have been some superior writing shit right dere.... MiG stands for Mikoyan and(i) Gurevich, designers of Russian military aircraft. You will figure this out when you edit the movie Nat, but the song Mav and Goose sing in the bar to Charlie is "You're Lost That Loving Feeling," (Righteous Brothers) .... not "Sitting by the Dock of the Bay". (Otis Redding). So... it did come around like you like! Unless you are seeing a version of the film that I am not, and they changed the last song on me. The Top Gun Soundtrack was in every 80's kids cassette case. (Best selling soundtrack 1986. In the top 20 of all time) Take My Breath Away (Berlin) (Oscar and Golden Globe, best original song) Danger Zone and Playing with the Boys (Kenny Loggins) Mighty Wings (Cheap Trick) Top Gun Anthem (Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens (Guitar)) (Grammy 1987)
Absolutely! Throwing that tape in the old Walkman and getting on my bike was FIRE as a kid!
Please please do Top Gun Maverick. You won’t regret it lol
Please watch the sequel; you'll love it.
Now you've seen this, you can see the superior "sequel": Hot Shots! Seriously, please consider putting Hot Shots! in a poll. One of the greatest parodies of all time.
Take Care Nat, wish you a nice weekend.
Also, hardly any CGI is used in this original Top Gun film. Mix of using the real Navy Pilots and scale model planes and green screen for a lot of the cockpit shots, but all the training stunts in this, the Navy actually did and the opening sequence all done by real people. None of the people in the opening are actors. The film crew just captured in the moment flight ops.
Did I vote this one because it would sneakily make Natalie cry? Possibly. But It's a classic. Love it. Looking forward to your reaction to TG: Maverick!
Nat, you HAVE to watch Top Gun Maverick, it's a sequal that came out 30 years later that is one of those rare gems that is way better than the original. 90% of it is practical, the actors actually did scens in the real planes, doing crazy stunts. ITS SO GOOD! The behind the scenes is fanominal, as the actors actually trained for high G maneuvers being trained by Blue Angles Stunt pilots. I was stationed on the aircraft carrier it was filmed.
So glad you watched this one and enjoyed it Natalie. I know a few Naval Aviators and even with some inaccuracies Top Gun is still a classic even among them. My dad actually got to meet one of the Naval Aviators who few the F-14’s in this movie, his callsign was Scooter. The scene at the beginning where Maverick flips the bird to one of the MiG pilots, that was Scooter. He also was the one who buzzed the tower after Maverick and Goose get Jester. Even back then buzzing the tower was a possible career ender for pilots and not only did they get permission to do it for the movie but they had to do it eight times or something because they couldn’t get the right shot. Let’s just say he said they had a lot of fun with that. Glad you liked it again, looking forward to more of your reactions.
Ohh heck yea!!! Much excite.
Happy Feature Friday Nat. Been excited to watch this movie with you and see what you made of it. An 80s classic, and hearing the Top Gun anthem always raises a smile 😊 Really enjoyed watching this today with you. It was a fun reaction until the dreaded scene. As Goose ejected, he unfortunately whacked into the cockpit. So sad 😭 Take My Breath Away became THE song at the time of this film's release. This movie was directed by the late, great Tony Scott, brother of Ridley. Pretty much every movie he made used the red filters over the top of the lens. And finally, you may have recognised the actor playing Viper. It was Tom Skerritt, who played Cpt. Dallas in Alien. Kudos to Tyler for the snippet at the end 😄 Would love to see your reaction to the sequel. It is epic. Thanks for a really great reaction today Nat, and as always, thanks for all your awesome work this week. Looking forward to the stream tomorrow 💛
When you eject a fighter canopy, it usually is left behind the plane but because of the spin, it went straight up and Goose did hit his head on it when he ejected
