Announcing Tasting History: The Board Game
Dear Patrons,
Something you may not know about me is that I love board games. I've played strategy board games for most of my life. I met many of my friends through board game meet ups when I first moved to LA and I've been known to haunt game cafes and conventions on the weekends. So when a company called Salt Games reached out to see if I wanted to develop a Tasting History board game, I literally shouted, "YES!"
The team I've been working with are all fans of Tasting History and understood the assignment from the start. A game for everyone, whether or not you watch Tasting History. (Yes, there are people who don't watch Tasting History.) But I didn't want to just reskin some game; rather, I wanted to build from the ground up. I wanted a game that requires strategy and allows you to learn something while playing. It's easy enough for anyone to learn but complex enough to satisfy dedicated gamers. Most importantly, it's made entirely by humans -- real developers, designers and artists who love games, history, and food.
It's a worker placement game where you cook famous feasts from history using period recipes and ingredients, many of which have been featured on the channel. We will launch with three historical eras including Ancient Rome. I've attached a sneak peek at that era's game board which is still a work in progress.
We launch the game on Kickstarter this Fall but the pre-campaign page is up now! And if you sign up for the pre-campaign page now and then pledge during the campaign, you'll receive the Garum Promo Pack of cards with the game. And if you're a Patreon Patron, you also receive an additional Feast Card Promo Pack.
Just sign up at this link to follow - https://launchoracle.com/r/NxJFKvVX
We'll be revealing more of the game, its historical eras, recipes, components, and deluxe content as we get closer to launch. And now I've also included a picture from one of our board game nights back at the old house. Notice the tiny kitchen in the background where it all started! Ah, memories...
Serving it Forth,
Max

I purchased the game, but also ordered the expansions. Do I cancel the expansions since I am a free member of Patreon and followed the campaign?
What level of patron do we need to be to get the Feast pack?
Any!
What's the solo mode on this like?
I haven’t played the solo mode yet. We should have an update to share soon.
This is so exciting! Will it come with a sleeve of red solo cups for gametime libations? ;)
Will the board be made from Hardtack?😀
Ecce! In picturā est ludus tabularis
There still are excellent news in this world!
Omg! My son and his partner are going to love this! The tasting history cookbook was the first gift I got them as a couple. Last year I got them Dutch ovens, fiestaware bakeware, and the tasting history pins (I kept the hard tack for myself.) so next year, the game! Thanks for being a part of my family traditions!
I love this. It makes me so happy to know I can be part of family traditions. It’s like when people now make the pumpion pie or pecan tart for the holidays. It warms my heart.
So when does donating to kickstarter open? Is a patreon upgrade needed for the feast pack? Asking for a friend tks
It’ll be late October. We haven’t locked in a date yet. I’ll be posting though. And as long as you’re a patron, you get the feast pack. You don’t need to upgrade - you’re here so you get it.
anything can become a drinking game
That’s exciting! I can’t wait to see and play it!
Oscar and I can’t wait to get the game (& play it)! Hoping to vacation with y’all again some day.
I am SO THRILLED! I love food (I am a chef) I love history and I love board games! I also support kickstarter projects, so this is perfect! I can’t wait to see this!
think i gotta get this
Yes! A new board game to bring to Sunday family gatherings!
Have you thought about attending/bringing this to PAX Unplugged in December?
Possibly in 2027
This is great. We love board games. Can’t wait to play so glad you started with Rome 😃.
This is so cool! The (single) picture looks intriguing!
OMG, this will be perfect for my son for Christmas!!! I have gotten him interested in your channel.
Holy crap! I've been with you for long enough, and am enough of a geek enough that this is an instant buy...even if beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)are not a super power. As soon as this goes live you have a backer.
I didn't know you were a TT gamer. If you've ever in San Antonio in January or July, you should check out FlingCon - 4 straight days of board gaming, held twice a year!
Sigh. And I was trying to stop Kickstarting games. But fine, shut up and take my money. 😉🙃
My family and I are big time board game players. We have a collection of over 200. Including the first American edition of Settlers of Catan.
Oh my gosh, I can't wait!!! I LOVE board games!!! Staring at Kickstarter (im)patiently, and I am totally up for play-testing should you invite us patrons to do so! So excited to see this come to life!!!
If I had known board gaming was part of the river cruises, I would've signed up last year! The next one's sold out,
Come to Vietnam!
You'd better have hardtack game pieces.
As a long time patron of Tasting History, and a producer on this game, I am so excited to reveal more in the upcoming weeks! Big thank you to Max for allowing us to play in his world! This is a literal dream project for all of us here at Salt.
Thank you, Geoff! You've made this process so smooth and I can't wait to see the game come to life.
Will there be a Drinking History companion? 🍷
Maybe a future expansion 😁
What I'd really like to see is you play a DnD campaign
Just been talking with the family about starting board game nights up again! Amazing timing
They are my stress relief. Even though I'm extremely competitive, playing destresses.
GET! HYPE!
Couldn't have put it better myself.
Oh gosh I cant wait
You should bring it with you in the cruise in Nov. I would love to give it a try
So I should have a prototype by then!! That's the hope.
I may have squeaked, possibly even lightly squealed, when I opened this email... Edit: If there are no hard tack game pieces I will be sad.
This has been my reaction every day since we started working on it!
Let me know if you need play testers Max 😉
So we've almost finished the game play enough to have testers. I'm hoping to be able to include at least some patrons in that process over the next couple of months as we lock things in. It's a worker placement & resource management game.
YES! This is so exciting!!
Perfect! My teenage grandson has lately become reluctant to engage in family game nights, but he's an avid and voracious history buff. He also likes to cook.
This will get him back to the table. If you need me to give him a talking to, happy to oblige.
This sounds incredible! I've backed a few boardgames on Kickstarter, I'm looking forward to seeing yours ^^
Yeah, it's interesting how they do it. The Kickstarter isn't actually to raise money, but more to raise interest and to know how many games to make. I've never done it.
Oh YES
This is in my wheel house. Love board games.
Oh my God yes
It already reminds me of Jumanji - the original one.
Loved that game. And the book! And the movie!
That's very interesting
Oh...yes. I will need this.
