I found lots of stuff in pre-sanda/Shiao jiao kung fu is hard to make work. You won't learn fight strategy or good foot work, not even timing. However... I found you can really pick up things on structure and foundation of stance with some kung fu styles. Or neat little things about movement or coordination.
fun facts 1) Kill or Get Killed is still an official U.S. Marine Corps doctrinal publication, Fleet Marine Force Reference Publication 12-80. It's in the same category as historical pubs about how to find potable water in the North African desert and Viet Cong booby traps and shit like that, basically oldies but goodies. 2) pre-modern Okinawan roads were usually made of crushed coral, would probably suck big time to throw yourself onto.
3 mins of silence to add time 😂🤔
Hey Jack, I’ve been reading your articles that talk about classical side steps. Got any more examples of fighters who used them well?
Far as i can tell Shootboxing will be on abema?
Applegate's style was actually heavily, if indirectly, influenced by Chinese martial arts. He was a colonel with the US Army's military police who helped develop hand-to-hand training, and wound up working on developing a curriculum of hand-to-hand combat for commandos and agents of the OSS (precursor to the CIA) with William Fairbairn. Fairbairn had been a cop in Shanghai for around 30 years, trained in boxing, had a black belt in Judo, studied various Chinese martial arts, was apparently covered in scars from getting attacked with knives. Interesting guy. Anyhow, Fairbairn's whole style of combat was basically "do all the most painful awful stuff you can so you can cripple and/or kill the other person as quickly as possible". He wound up being a huge influence on Applegate, and they continued to collaborate on various projects until Fairbairn's death in 1960. So it wouldn't be surprising if the stuff mentioned in the podcast was in fact Applegate writing describing straight-up Chin Na techniques that he'd learned from Fairbairn.
Forget the videogame episode, where's the Richelieu/30 Years War review? Great episode, Slacky J!
One fight worth watching this weekend is Semeleer vs Groenhart on glory 85 👍🏽 beyond kick have Semeleer at no.1 for welterweight
Not super surprising to see ads for Tekken 8, even though it won't be coming out ages - usually we have to sit and watch them play the actual game in arcades in Japan for a year or so before the updated console port even comes out, but not sure if that's what they're doing this time (results in a more solid end product I've always felt though). I'll still holding out hope for the official Slacky Tekken Pod though 😄
The Yadong Song of saying Chinese names wrong.
Shootboxing has a YouTube channel where they post the fights a few weeks after they occur
Yeah I wanna say it's available the very next weekend or so right on there
