What are your thoughts, if any, on the Gaethje vs Topuria hand wrapping situation? I initially dismissed it as marketing, which it still may well be, but having watched the Brendan Dorman video I do think some valid points got raised. In particular, the seeming absence of commission and obvious conflicts of interest at the top. Is Gaethje getting excommunicated from his own church?

Is there any effective way one could punish someone who is sticking their fingers out looking for cheeky eye pokes, or is the only option to just go eye for an eye?

K
Kevin · September 24, 2026

This weekend featured Josh Van capably defending takedowns and even going for an armlock, and Pantoja going toe to toe on the feet with the better striker. At HW we also saw Robelis Despaign win a fight with wrestling so porous he handed Tai Tuivasa the first take down of his career. What are some of the most one dimensional championship level fighters to succeed at lower weight classes?

A
Alex Olivares · September 24, 2026

We saw Van successfully get up after being under under Pantoja's full mount I think at least twice. Barring a completely gassed or incompetent opponent (which to be fair is many in MMA, lol), how does full mount get used effectively for ground and pound? It's hard to think of it as this position being the insta-win it used to be for the top player in older eras.

W
Worm · September 24, 2026

Its not like mount is useless compared to 10 years ago. Its not an era thing its just pantoja tends to sell out on doing damage on top and instead opt to get the back where he is amazing. But van essentially had the goal on the ground to not give up his back no matter what

-
-Jack--Attack- · September 24, 2026

You've talked before about fighters that have benefited from a step back in competition such as, Charles Olivera. But I know you are also outspoken about your dislike of can crushing, such as the classic boxing build up, or Canderson Silva himself (MVP). Obviously there is a line between a step back in competition, and can crushing, but I'd be interested to hear your opinion on where that line is. -Thanks!

S

Why does it seem so hard for clinch striking as a primary offensive tool to catch on when we've seen successful fighters build there games on it and so much of modern mma takes place in the clinch.

W
Worm · September 24, 2026

What do you think about rodolfo vieira? I feel as if he had a lot of potential at the start of his career, his top game is phenomenal obviously and his arm triangle is beautiful, but he hasnt been able to even get on top of his opponents in his last 4 or 5 fights.

W
Will · September 24, 2026

Gaethje said before his fight with Topuria that "champions move forward." Not only was this a prophetic pronouncement, since he drowned Topuria with willingness to stand in the fire, but this is indeed true of many of the greatest champions, such as Jones, Fedor, and Holloway (to whom Gaethje had of course just lost). What are some of the pithiest things you could say about what unites the greatest of all time? I think you mentioned in a recent pod that great fighters have great jabs, which is true even of grapplers like GSP and even Khabib. So what would you say is the simplest, most fundamental thing that'll elevate a good fighter to a great one? And bonus question: What would you say is the simplest, most fundamental thing that'll reduce a good fighter to a fucking shit one? ILY keep up the great work

Here's my fourth time posting this question. Do you have any further thoughts the work of 'Champ' Jay Thomas particularly his stonewall/ philly shell compilation book effectively the only book the the philly shell. He had unique and rather detailed instructions on footwork and solo training with emphasis on isometrics for power punching. What are your thoughts into on comparing historical and current philly shell fighters with Thomas's methods. A set of techniques I find in his book especially intriguing is the low lead hand 'curved jab' and 'curved hook' . They are in essence a fleshed examples of punching from underneath outside the field view of the opponent. It could be useful for philly shell, cross arm, and low hands/no guard positions. I imagine it would a be nightmare if a ko artist like Carlos Prates implemented it into an already lethal striking game. P.S. The backfist curved hook seems to cross over into Thomas's killer outlaw boxing aka dirty boxing material. I managed to snag a copy have had time to make bootleg digital copy. I let you when I finish it.

Opinions on the old school Fa Jin concept but specifically for attacking the body with ground and pound from the top. By setting your hand on the opponent's solar plexus or possibly above the liver(I haven't had the heart try this on my training partners) you can unironically knock the breath out of people or possibly mimic strike impact with good accuracy by placing your hand flat on the target beforehand. Super goofy but by mixing it up with pressing up to gain posture I have done way more damage than I've expected. I only really use it on top since when the opponent is in guard they have no where for the impact to travel through. Are there any other old school unorthodox martial arts concepts that you think could be applied more in MMA or grappling? And if so how do you think they can be used in fight scenario? Thanks for the content and hopefully you can make me an even worse training partner

Boxing coach question: Is Barry Robinson a good coach or is his system a question of marketing and carving out a valuable distinctive niche? Half the time I have no idea if he’s describing what he’s seeing and recognizing reality through a methodology or if he’s Dominic Cruzing it up and overwriting reality through his lense.

L
Lad · September 23, 2026

My problem with Barry Robinson is that he’s way too dogmatic in his approach. He has a number of solid ideas about footwork, hand fighting and dealing with aggressive southpaws, but he packages it into a system that is way too rigid and low output for any reasonable observer to call his preferred approach sound.

What if the pay was better? If the pay was higher on par with other professional sports thus able to get more athletes involved, would the top guys in the UFC still be the top guys or are they only the best because they’re the only ones doing it

L
Leo · September 23, 2026

That's really hard to say because it depends on a lot of factors but you'd have to assume there would be other people in the mix at least. I'd like to imagine heavyweight and 205 would be better as entire divisions because nowadays they tend to mostly have the guys not athletic enough for better paid sports. But they might just end up being similar just with more athletic fighters

Hey Jack, I’m a white belt in my 4th year of university, and have been training since my freshman year of college at my school’s BJJ club. This semester I’ve fallen into the position of leading my school’s BJJ club. Essentially you need a semester of experience on the club’s board and the current board is all new people. Do you have any tips for being a better instructor? When I show technique I tend to dissolve into a lot of “put this arm here” or “ ums”. As well as living up to that leadership position? A lot of the club members are my friends but I find myself in a “Michael Scott”-esque position where I want everyone to like me and that causes me to be afraid of being firm; I.E. personal conversations while I’m demonstrating technique.
