In the middle of a HISTORIC 3 event slump. I'm working on some other good shit, but gimme your questions for the boicast

What do you think is the most important attribute that a fighter, for example power, cardio or chin, cause I was wondering which one could take you far into the MMA without not even being that good of a fighter.
Hi Jack, am struggling a lot with shooting in an open stance match up in an mma context. I've not found much advice on the internet apart from attacking the single leg. Got any tips or anyone to watch? Frankie Edgar's wife as the siren in The Odyssey. Bless
Would DC have been able to get up from the broadcast booth and beat all four of the heavyweights on the prelims? In one round each? In a row? I think maybe yes to all.
Elbows from the bottom: Wrestler nuke or woke nonsense?
‘Ello Jack, as you said, the UFC is in a slump for a couple of weeks, could you pls do more Muay Thai / Kickboxing content in the meantime? I personally find it much more interesting than the break down of UFC prelims / mostly mid fights that most of us dont really care about. I know the UFC content prolly gets more clicks but I wonder if you also feel the same way?
Writing this for this question for the second time. Hi Jack, what are your further thoughts the work of 'Champ' Jay Thomas particularly his stonewall/ philly shell compilation book effectively the only book the the philly shell. He had unique and rather detailed instructions on footwork and solo training with emphasis on isometrics for power punching. What are your thoughts into on comparing historical and current philly shell fighters with Thomas's methods. A set of techniques I find is his book especially intriguing is the low lead hand 'curved jab' and 'curved hook' . They are in essence a fleshed examples of lead hand punching from underneath outside the field view of the opponent. It could be useful for philly shell, cross arm, and low hands/no guard positions. I imagine it would a be nightmare if a ko artist like Carlos Prates implemented it into an already lethal striking game. P.S. The backfist curved hook seems to cross over into Thomas's killer outlaw boxing / dirty boxing material. I managed to snag a copy have had time to make bootleg digital copy. I let you know when I finish it.
ONE'S hosting a lot of Lightweight kickboxing fights this weekend, all of which are guaranteed to be bangers outside of Kaito vs Siasarani. Notable bouts are Liu vs Noiri 2, Usubyan vs Grigorian, and outside of that you've got up and comers like Shoma Okumura who's very exciting fighting on the card.
Slightly odd philosophy-of-sports question, but as an observer of the sport, how do you account for the role of luck? It's always felt like (in some sports more than others) there is this huge element of luck that determines outcomes. Sure - in MMA the better fighter out of a pair will win a majority of fights, but we typically only get one (or two). A friend swears that tennis is the game with the lowest element of luck in it. I'm curious how you think of MMA/combat sports in these terms. How big a proportion do you allow luck to account for in the result of a fight, or for the sake of your sanity as a commentator do you have to set that aside to some extent?
hey jack longtime boi here... my question is about the right hand inside the left hook, is there such a way to set it up and consistently catch people with it and who are people to study and learn from?
Hey Slackey, long time listener, first time commenter. What are, in your opinion, the main 'good practices' of proffessional fighters in striking that you usually don't learn in the typical large 'soccer mom' classes, as you put it. For example, in an old heavy hands episode with Connor's boxing coach, Luis Monda, Connor says that ideas like 'attack the center line' and 'line up the jab with the lead foot and point it at the middle of their body' are eye-openers and suddenly 'it's easier to box'. And how can one learn these things more in depth if they can't afford a boxing coach, YouTube is so full of random techniques and strategies videos that it's difficult to know which ones are the essential practices that real proffessional fighters think about. (P.S. I got my shotokan black belt 10 years ago in Brazil, but I have been alternating between practicing boxing, muaythai, and mma on-and-off since moving to London and discovering that much of karate is not practical. You have helped me tremendously in the past years in this regard, I have developed a Frankenstein hillbilly shoulder roll to account for the fact that shotokan fighters are allergic to pressure + some Bobby knuckles blitzes, and I fancy myself a switch hitter because of my shotokan background, though I'm better from orthodox. If you have any tips/directions for that style, and to become a better pocket fighter/combination puncher as well that would be awesome, I'm 5'9 with long mcgregor-esque arms, if that helps lol)
What’s a technical trend in MMA that most fans haven’t noticed yet, but you think will become common over the next five years?
Do you feel there are any advantages to try and G&P to the body instead of head hunting?
Hi Slackie, would be curious to hear you opinion with regards to high level striking, to what extent does it tend to be “canned routines” that people have trained to muscle memory vs what is seeing openings in the moment? Some fighters seem to be able to pick through peoples guards like its not even there, whereas others seem to just be spamming combinations until something gets through
I’d be interested to hear you soliloquising a while on the influence of sadism and masochism in combat sports. Don’t think anyone involved hasn’t got at least some element of them both, but I think in particular the masochistic nature of absolutely hammering yourself in training doesn’t get talked about much
If you could choose to have overwhelming power in one of your strikes only. What would you choose? Imo I’d go with a good left hook.
Youve spoken about why Mohammed is considered so great having pretty much had 2 careers, but why isn't George Foreman spoken about more in the same light? Wht he lacks in name recognition in the latter half he makes up for by winning the title at 46.
as a result of watching your MMA content I can no longer bear to listen to most MMA content creators. Other than heavy hands, are there any programs with similar ratios of tekkers and bollocks?
Phantom Punch Podcast with Movement Martials and Ghost is almost all tekkers with 10% of them being silly
What is your favorite "how the fuck did he survive that?" moment. I'm still in disbelief that Ben Askren survived that first minute with Robbie Lawyer after being directly dropped on his head.
Remember when we all thought Damir Ismagulov and Guram Kutateladze where gonna be the future of the UFC? And is there anyone you thought would be the future that didn’t pan out?
Oi mate, you promised us you would notify us of the good fights in the sea of slop for each card? What happened?
Oi mate, you promised us you would notify us of the good fights in the sea of slop for each card? What happened?
Hey Jack, when can we get a breakdown on Fundora? Watching some video his next opponent put out and just the task of training for a 6ft6, 154er has them doing some crazy stuff in the gym. I guess, more generally, how does a fighter prepare for a much taller, rangier opponent, especially when that guy is probably more dangerous in close? https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZ8lJfkNzIH/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet Appreciate the podcast. It's been hard to keep up as a fan of MMA with how watered down these UFC cards are.
Whats the craic Jack? I've been watching alot of Marcelo Garcia and Danaher instructionals as of late and perhaps im projecting here but can't help but feel like there is a certain aggressive quality to Marcelos "attack the attacker" style compared to Danahers cold calculated systematizing of applying there game. I'm definitely more of a passive player if that makes sense, relying on opportunity in later rounds and was wondering have you ever heard of having to cultivate a certain mindset or possess a certain aptitude for making a style or select techniques work in combat sports. Appreciate the content as always. Cheers
Whats the craic Jack? Years upon years ago you answered the question of which 3 MMA fighters you would have by your side to tackle an alien of the creepy twilight zone kind I remember you picked GSP for one as a true believer and yourself with a bat to "twat dem in the head", can't remember the 3rd. Is your answer still the same today? Cheers
-Positioning in Striking - where and how do I learn about it? There is an endless amount of Videos on YouTube on how to throw the different techniques but not as much on how to get into the perfect position to throw them. I have realized that striking is so much more about footwork and positioning than I thought when I started learning it. Now I wonder who has good stuff on positioning, angles and that kind of stuff. I know Brad Quake Ridell has some very good videos on his channel but that‘s about it. Do you have any recommendations? Who has good content and which fighters should I study?
my friend wrote a detailed article on it https://phantompunchbreakdowns.substack.com/p/tip-sheet-positions-in-striking
What national style of boxing (Soviet, Cuban, Mexican) do you prefer and which style do you think is the best for mma
Have there been any elite level fighters with noticeably bad durability? If so how did they make up for it?
Tips for dealing with the excruciating pain of doing absolutely anything in this sport? Been watching mma for years but just got into training, “checked” a light kick from a friend in a very relaxed spar and for a second i might’ve considered crawling into a corner and crying in the fetal position.
Due to the strict regulations of MMA in Norway, young athletes struggle to build as fighters. Still there are some talent here. Like the FCR fighter Jon Vetle Furuheim. Have you seen hes fights and if so anyone notes? Hell boy Hansen bless.
recently came across a video talking about prime demian maia beating carlos prates based on maias chain grappling against the fence and then taking prates down and getting an rnc. What do you think about that matchup
Got any tips for breaking up out of the clinch and avoiding getting into it altogether against a clinch specialist?
How can I get Zhang Weili to go out with me? I've tried nothing and I'm already out of ideas.
What do you think about the long guard? I was watching Yan vs Merab 2 last night, and whenever Yan backed up with the high guard Merab threw an overhead over Yan's left arm, but when Yan had his hands in position to jab and parry Merab was running into jabs. Do you see any good uses or applications for it?
If Jamahal Hill has a great run at HW could we start seeing the fat belly meta?
What make a jab? What would you say are the keys to being a problem with the jab?
What is your top 5 must reads in regards to striking? You mentioned Fighting for Fun by Eddie Eagan and the copy I bought happened to be signed (just a fun side note)
Bullshido aside, are there any ninjutsu techniques applicable to modern martial arts?
Why aren't shin kicks more common?
Top 3 sexiest combination strikers from any discipline
we all know how fun and great the mma ecosystem was at its peak, how so many of us used to consume all the promo materials and watch the pressers and so on back in that foregone era. you added to our experience back then. with how dismal things have become and will remain for the foreseeable future, youre now not just an addition to this ecoystem but a necessity. so, im begging you - if you ever start to feel an inkling of burnout or feel uninspired again or just want some time off - PLEASE take that time off. you are too essential to lose. we will all understand. we all do understand. and we are all so fucking grateful for not just the constant quality of your work but how enjoyable and entertaining you make it all.
The Serbia card is dubbed by many as one of the greatest UFC cards ever. When will people learn that finish ≠ good fights. This was a regional card being broadcasted by the UFC
How do you think fighters with idiosyncratic styles mainly come about developing them? I’m thinking Dom Cruz, Elias Theodorou (RIP), davey grant, etc. where their games you would never teach somebody else, but works well for them. Is it just random, or from injuries, or cheating with their athleticism or physical frame, or a combination?
Thoughts on using turtle as an offensive position in mma? Shooting bad shots to let someone go behind to then get reversals or submissions from there. Any examples of good fighters using turtle to get reversals rather than just getting up
What are some good feints/set ups for pure grappling? Is there a look low kick high for wrestling or even just jiu jitsu?
Hey jack, i happen to be a tall muay thai fighter blessed with hip mobility and just good flexibility in general, i want to take advantage of this with a high kick and kick up the middle heavy style, what are some tips and also dangers of such a style (besides gassing out)! Thanks for all your insight!!
We often talk about the advantages of the long limbed fighters. But I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the advantages for the shorter limbed fighters I’ve heard people reference Joshua Van’s stature as an advantage in his kipping escapes when mounted by Taira. And it’s noticeable the success Dominick Reyes had in defending Jones’ shots by being able to pull Jones’ locked hands above his hips. What other advantages in MMA might there be for us T-Rex like gentlemen?
Please consider and share your thoughts on the invention of a combat sport with a rule stucture and culture that encourages eye pokes and groin strikes to replace Sanda, or possibly to exist alongside sanda as a separate league, similar to the combat sambo/sport sambo dynamic. What would that sport look like? Would we see animal styles and moves from old martial arts manuals? Imagine a competent MMA competitor who is also a champion of this hypothetical sport goes to vale tudo. How dangerous would that guy be?
Hey Slack, with the UFC cards being so weak right now and not many people caring about PFL, do you think other combat sports could grow in popularity because of it? I've been having a lot of fun watching Muay Thai and kickboxing as alternatives, and it makes me wonder why more MMA fans don't give it a chance.
How do you feel about pro wrestling/catch wrestling and their relation to combat sports history and promotion?
What are some commonalities you’ve found between fighting and other one-on-one competitive ventures? I’ve found I’ve been able to plug in a lot of what I’ve learned from fights to stuff like Chess and Street Fighter.
Slacky I'm debating about quitting trying to get actually good at grappling and becoming a meme wrist lock guy. What are some kinda BS techniques that you personally love to do?
Favorite fighter based on walkout song choices?
Are you familiar with the term "dead spaces" of a fight? Term coined by Kick of Movement Martials, who you follow on instagram meaning its the part of the fight where there is no action between the two fighters. Its also called "ambient movement" by Silvie von Douglas Itto. In your opinion, what are important things should a fighter be focused on during these "dead spaces"? getting better cage position, setups, etc
Big Slacks Jack my question is what fighter in the UFC do you think would benefit most from the HRT vitor belfort treatment. Ie being placed on HRT at the end of their career so that they have a veterans experience and a young man's body.
Who are the fighters who used fundamental skills in a martial art and applied it at the highest levels in MMA? The first two I think of are Ilia Topuria & Demian Maia. They also happen to be two of my favorite fighters.
Are we getting that Jourdaine break down you mentioned? Any plans for more grappling guides for MMA or BJJ?
The cheeky nodder. What are fights where a fighter has clearly gained an advantage from a headbutt(s) without any consequences? How would our dearest jack advise that we properly headbut someone? Is there a point of diminishing returns?
Any thoughts on the boxing at the commonwealth games ?
Have you read the professional by WC Heinz and what did you think of the ending if you did?
After the unreal turnout & energy for what was a relatively unknown mma market in Serbia, where do you think the next unexpected mma boom could / will be?
Loved the recent rws fight breakdown because I've been watching lot of muy thai lately hope you do more. One championships and rws was the only thing i enjoyed last weekend of fights
What is your favorite fight to rewatch? Like if you wanna cool down from a rough day or just want to sit down and watch an awesome fight that you’ve rewatched 100 times already because it never gets old. Can be any promotion or from any era.
Have you ever read Sam Sherridan's book "the fighter's heart" reading it now and it's great. Early 2000s and he trains with and interviews brazilian top team, militech fight team, trains in thai land, is at Pride etc and I like how it's his journey through fighting as a martial arts lover and not as like a legend of fighting so it's relateable for combat sport enthusiast.
It's incredible man. The dog fighting chapter towards the end about gameness was fascinating. Very rewarding read
Hey there Slacky! I know you don't coach but I had a question for you about handling rulesets. I run an MMA program and have people that want to compete under different rules (MMA, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, etc). Since I'm running out of a BJJ gym I can't do separate classes for each style. How would you balance the specific work needed for each sport? We're still at the ammy levels so I know there's not a huge difference but wanted your opinion for how camps would do it at higher levels
Hey Jack. Do you have any recommendations for grapplers or instructionals to study for white belts? In addition, would you ever consider doing a top 3 grapplers that you should be studying article?
Which UFC fighters do you think would have the most success in a boxing only rule set where you get 3x1 minute rounds or less à la Dan Hooker’s back yard scraps
What do you think made Haggerty's movement much more effective than Woolliss against Yuki Yoza (other than Haggerty just being the better fighter)?
What currently illegal moves if made legal would change the MMA meta the most/ be most effective?
Hey Jack! Trying this one again. I'm a grappler in the Gi and have been training for about a year. I'm a small guy and when I compete I do it in the smallest weight class available (which is often bigger than my natural weight). I am lanky enough but struggle with being out strengthed by my opponents, although I find I have a cardio edge over everyone I grapple against. How can I leverage a cardio advantage without just getting held and tapped early which has happened in all my competitions so far? Thanks!
What are defensive fundamentals you see lacking in modern MMA? Heavy Hands cited the the right straight/cross defence being abysmal, Ive noticed alot of fighters not really being capable of dealing with a good jab.
Yeah I just saw that episode where they mentioned that about the fortune fight, really noticable once you're thinking about it watching lots of mma fights now.
Hey Slackey Jey! I thought about this wondeful question while listening to a podcast of yours in which you claimed lead leg low licks could be very useful to unbalance your opponent. So, what are the easiest ways to accomplish that? Does it depend on the opponents stance?
Watched Muratalla box this past week, and while I was impressed, I can’t see him beating guys like Shakur or even a Devin Haney. I know you really like him, do you think he is a P4P Talent?
Why do you think fighters like volk or belal Muhammad or even guys like Eric spicely back in the day can make the UFC in 5 years after starting and even become champions of their division but other guys train their whole life and never make it. Is it solely an athleticism thing or is there more to it?
Coaching probably
What do you think makes a good fighter nickname? Rhyming, relevance to your skill set, pure rule of cool or all of the above? Similarly, who has the best fighter nickname ever and why is it Nate “The Train” Landwehr?
Has to be rule of cool. Case in point Carlos "the natural born killer" condit
Do you ever want to be on the fence? You’ve often said having your back to the fence is a pretty bad position and that you wanna push your opponent to the fence, but that got me thinking is there ever a time you want your back to the fence?
Which fighters do you think have the best body mechanics?
Have you seen The Furious yet?
Favourite fighting games?
What are your favourite footwork traps?
Why can a billion dollar company not put together a decent fight for an Islam Makhachev card
It's less a matter of ability and more of wanting to or caring about it.
