Your mono signal sucks! Better mono can I HAAS?

If there is one widening type I'd love to eradicate and destroy, it's HAAS widening.
In my daily mixing work, I hear its disastrous results too often.

Let's learn about better mono again. This'll only take you a few minutes and hopefully help.

Let's make mono great again!

Question and Issue: I bought the sidewidner II plugin. Yet, I still have mono issues. For example, I have an arp lead with delay on it. I know the delay is adding differences, or width, so I apply the sidewidner plugin to correct the issue and the issue still remains. When I use YouLean loudness meter to check the volume, by using Utility to switch to mono, I see that without the sidewidner plugin I have -15 Integrated LUFS. Then when I apply the sidewidner plugin my LUFS climb to -18.5 LUFS integrated. That is a 3db difference volume. My plugin chain is as follows: Serum 2 -> Sidwidner -> Ableton Utility -> YouLean Loudness Meter. For me this where theory and practice breakdown. I understand difference in signal causes width/stero and every time I try to correct for I lose volume. When I try to add back int he volume the mix doesn't end up sounding good to me. I cannot get my music to sound good in mono. FANU can you please help me.

Hmmm! Weird. I should investigate it further. Can you send the project to me? One track is enough.

Agreed HAAS effect sucks ass! Been using Sidewidener since the first version what a great simple plugin! Fanu do you use much of ozone imager to add width say if you wanted to use it in multiband mode to avoid spreading the low end?

I don’t use Imager that much – sometimes though. I’ve often found that the stereo image it creates often leans on one side a bit. Even had a client mention that once. The wider you go, the more you may notice it. It has another mode too but it widens the transients too but most of the time I don’t do that.

Loved the intro 🤣 Great video mate. I know some people might shout ‘shill!’ but I love product recommendations from trustworthy pros. Saves me a ton of time and potentially money on shit with great marketing!

haha :P that's almost the only widener I use! one can get its earlier version for free from Computer Music's plugin vault if they buy any issue of CM. There's also a free, more chorus-type widener, called Multiply by Acon Digital that is great. to boost any *existing* width, one can use any plugin that does that, e.g., Ableton Utility, Voxengo MSED etc…they dont *generate* width but can raise the level of existing width.
