One magical plugin to fix your kick (mixing miniseries ep. 6)
🎛️👌🏻🎅🏻Xmas is coming early: get ready for more of these shorter mixing/production videos…there's a lot lined up. All these are from my daily work and productions.
This one's for both producers and engineers that can appreciate good kicks with decent punch. This can help those into tech house, DNB, hip hop etc.
Every now and then I'm in a kick mixing situation where I think the usual mixing tools such as EQ, compressor, and transient tools just won't cut it.
I've become better at being able to say "This kick won't work" but in the past year I found out about this one plugin that can be like magic, and it's helped many kicks I'd otherwise reject.
It deals with phase, so we're getting more advanced.
I've always said mixing isn't about magical plugins at all and you just need good source sounds, but this one is an exception.
Hear it in the preview: it's like magic to the poor flappy kick.
(For much more kicks wisdom: see THIS, THIS and THIS video.

BTW, I'll soon reveal the best new kick/bass sidechain I've found, and that one is actually FREE so stick around and you'll hear soon.
Anyways, back to today's topic, what plugin is it that can help flappy kicks? It is: ⬇️
Kilohearts Disperser (this is not an ad: I've bought it - you can demo it, so do try).
The company describes it like this:
"Have you ever wanted to rotate the phases of your signal to create frequency sweeps? Funny, neither had we, but then we tried it and were blown away!
Disperser smears high energy transients through space and time without modifying the gain of the sound.
The result is a different take on transient shaping or, when used at extreme settings, an effect capable of shaping the sounds in ways you didn’t know you wanted to do. Boomy kicks, snappy hihats, synthetic wet basses or just a sweet utility to shape your signal's peaks and crest factor. The choice is yours!"
So what the plugin does it changes the timing of the given frequencies, as I understand it, without adding anything. So it may not work for all kicks, but if your kick is OK, this may improve it and make it a bit better in the punch department.

thank you for the tip fanu! what do you think of the ableton roar dispersion filter? if you do single band + turn off compression + duplicate it you've kinda got a scalable disperser or is there more to this plugin? just not sure if i really need it yknow
Now that’s you giving me a tip: haven’t tried that…maybe I should! Thank you
Sometimes using old breaks i worry that they can't match the punch of modern single hit drums. Have you used this plug-in on kicks from a break? I guess the amount would have to be subtle or it would sound weird?! Thanks.
Good point and question. While I do enjoy working with old breaks, I can't help touching them a little bit - I enjoy it. For example some old ones have really round transients, so a little bit of enhancement can work. This one could definitely work on some kicks for sure - it's all fair game really! Might sound sick on Shack Up which has a somewhat mighty punch already? Tools like this often work, and sometimes not at all…the joy is in trying and having a big toolbox!
Nice))) Interesting when you up for modern))) Thanx a lot for sharing
another good morning! anither good tip
Yes sir! Enjoy your weekend
