Why Izotope Ozone is great – a tutorial (+a quick Pro-L comparison) [45 min video]
I've been using Izotope Ozone in my mastering work for 11+ years.
I wanted to make a video on why I think it's great and indispensable.
I'm covering why it's a great mastering limiter – one of the best if not the best – and its various modules I use often.
Video also covers a little bit of my mixing/mastering philosophy and touches on some quick tips you may benefit from when mixing and mastering your music.

Just got to watching this one.. Ozone 5 Advanced was $999!
Phew, wasn’t cheap then!
reinvigorated my interest in Ozone! thanks
do u always use a 20hz lowcut on the master? and does it make a difference fe. in pq3 when using linear phase or zero lat. ? thx!
I often have it on by default, yes; not much stuff down there we need. If you care about phase, it does matter, technically at least. On master I’d use linear phase and on tracks I use minimum phase (zero latency). Does one even hear the difference? Debatable.
Been in the Ozone (Maximiser/Limiter) > PRo-L2 - camp for limiting/maximising for mastering aswell bro. Typically only use Pro-L2 for clipper/brickwall for spikey transients now with pretty fast a&r setting. It's quick to use + gui is nice. You said this ages ago and it stuck with me over traditional clippers. I heard a few guys using Pro-l2 with max'd out setting on attack knob for better transients in mastering - I tried it on a few masters, but honestly Ozone just sounds bigger / louder and also love no a&r settings. I do like to flick to IRC-4 modern for some EDM / more pop dance masters, not as beefy like IRC-3 balance. but same as you love IRC-3 Blanace as a go to IRC. If I still ever used Pro-L2 for limting on a master, it's mostly just to clip a few trasients -0.5/2dbs to get a bit more headroom for ozone :) Gonna test those new modules in ozone now
Sorry, rewatched a few times, still don't understand why 2 though? One limiter has +1.3db gain boost, the other +13.1db. Why not use one limiter with a +14.4db boost?
It’s not about the boost. Kind of ignore the large number; a big part of that is just raising the level (I keep the signal fairly quiet early on in the chain to allow ample headroom for plugin inputs). It’s about two limiters sharing the peak limiting instead of one. It’s a tried and tested approach that often gives you a smoother result with less distortion and pumping.
Fanu, do you master your hip hop tracks via Ozone as well?
Yes
Really enjoyed watching this, and seeing how you use Ozone. Thanks!
