House music mixing tips part 1 (tech house etc) [20 min. video]
If there is one style of music I have been handling almost every single workday for years now, it is bassy house, tech house!
If there is one style of music I have been handling almost every single workday for years now, it is bassy house, tech house etc, and you may know I've worked a lot with artists like John Summit for years.
Here is some tips and thoughts about what I do in nearly every house music mix.
You can most definitely apply this to any genre!

Hey Fanu, i got a question. When you automate the gain on the utility pre drop and post drop, when you will do a boost for example of 0.8 db on the drop that goes back down to 0 after 8-16 bars or so, aren't you "leaving loudness on the table" like that for the rest of the tune? Meaning, assuming you push to the point just before audible distortion on the limiters, you would have to use that drop section for that right? Are you not bothered the rest of the tune having lets say .8 db less gain that could be utilised? Cheers!
I am not sure I understand the question 100%. The point is the bump the loudness on the drop just a bit, to have it hit a touch harder than the rest of the song. Maximum drop impact.
please fanu! more videos of house music, love how you do!! by the way, Would you recommend working with a limiter on the master during the production process, and then doing a deep mix and final master?
Hiya Unless you’re good at mixing levels, no, I don’t recommend working with a limiter early on. What other house stuff would you like to see? It’s so easy to point out in the context of people’s mixes whenever they want to learn more (as opposed to trying to come up with general advice) but I’ll try :-)
Really helpful tips! I have a question regarding the automation of the width with the utility plug in. How come during the last drop of the song for bar 129 you didn't reset the width back to 12 oclock but instead brought it back slowly? Is that so the drop sounds wider?
Yes I vary this a bit! It depends on the elements. Sometimes I slap it back to 12 o’clock quickly (maybe in more minimal drops), but in epic drops, taking it down slower and gradually often feels good.
Simple but Super Effective Tips! I believe you said the same for KICK's aswell in another video if I'm remembering correctly. But is there ever an instance you're not rebalancing fundamentals/1st harmonics? possibly layered drum?
Yes, I of course don't wanna touch anything by default :) I'll only carve the stuff that needs carving! 🔪🎚️
Good tips, thanks! Looking forward to more
Curious as to why you run natural phase vs zero latency on Q3 - any specific tonality or sonic reasoning? Cold vs Analogy?
On the master I often use natural phase. Let’s say “just in case”. It should preserve phase better than zero latency (aka minimum phase). Sometimes I try and hear the difference and I just can’t; depends on the intensity of the boost too. On tracks I always use minimum phase.
super helpful, thank you!
Thank you ! More will come ✌🏻🎚️
