Master referencing tip!
Using the free and great Voxengo SPAN analyzer, I'm showing you how you can view both your song as well as a reference song nicely layered.
Your ears are a super important tool when it comes to actually listening, but still, seeing how your song compares is a really good thing to guide you – especially when it comes to subs.
It never hurts having GOOD tools in your audio toolbox and bag of tricks! The more you know, the more informed decisions you can make.
And hey you can solo in on frequencies with SPAN too; I'm showing that at the end.
Let's talk more about some mastering stuff soon!

Brilliant 🤩
Glad you find it useful!
Side tangent: at 1:22 we can see all of your Live Browser sub categories/types. I still find all the updates to the Live browser a bit overwhelming - I don’t suppose you would consider doing some videos on how you best make use of the Live browser system to help your workflow?
can't say my use of it is very advanced: I have a few sample folders and use tons of silly preset names I can find quickly with my keyboard (e.g., "44444444" for proQ4, haha), and so on. im prob not using it to its fullest potential...I dont even use the collections much anymore TBH. I do use the user label feature, under which I have some of the most used plugs I use in daily work.
Do you use / have any thoughts on Metric A/B?
never used!
Really helpful. I need to develop a more consistent reference system, and this is a big help.
Another quick question: If you are doing a mixdown, and there may be some processing on the master channel, then is how the Reference track is displayed in SPAN impacted by that Master Bus processing? OR Does the Reference track audio go DIRECT to Span, unaffected by the Master Processing?
Thanks for this! I was just watching after I finished up some premaster work. All of it has me inspired to jump in and mix that next track, which is kind of mad, because six months ago I didn't think I could.
You can do it! 👊🏻
