Chopping Science vol.3: processing + beefing up Soul Pride break! [video]
It's drums processing time!
Ever since Chopping Science episode 2 I've meaning to get back to processing the Soul Pride break a bit further and touch it a bit just because it's so great.
So here, I'm finally layering some hits to go with the good old Soul Pride break (one of my faves, and made me start the breaks series) and I'm processing it a bit.
It's crazy how you can take a classic break pretty easily to a next level with a bit of help…hope you can get some ideas!
I promised one of you to do this a long time ago too – so sorry it's taken so long! – and I'm a man of my word, always.
👉🏻 Check out the new collection! 👈🏻
BTW I've edited the Collection that was earlier known as Breakbeat Of The Month to be "Breakbeats Stuff" (<link: check it out!) and there's now a LOT of stuff under it!
So check out that collection if you wanna peep my drums stuff.
Note that it sorts content from newest to oldest.
I still need to create more collections (e.g., Ableton stuff, sample downloads).
🌞 Will soon write an update about things ☀️
Hope summer is hot wherever you are!

Really exciting when you put the Drum Buss and gate! Interesting to see that when you add the bass in the end you ditch Neutron. Maybe on a breakdown while the bass is off you could still use it.. One thing, what do you think about layering transients and tails separately (meaning for one hit with 2 different layer hits)? Especially if we're talking about dnb without 50 different hits in a loop.. Anyway it's so nice to see you work on breaks.
I like some layers – they can be helpful! I’ve especially been liking SnapBack by Cableguys for some transient layer help when needed.
Also, interesting point about varying the transient processing and/or gating when building and reducing intensity between sections of tracks. That isn’t something that would have occurred to me, but I can see how it is little touches like that that can keep moving the levels of energy in both subtle and drastic ways.
Another really insightful video re. your break processing process. Around the 20minute mark you mention the importance of getting a vibe going, and maintaining that ‘newness’ when working on a track - not getting lost in the technicalities of mixdown early on. Have you found through trial and error if there is an optimal timeframe that it usually takes to complete a track, that ensures that momentum is maintained?
No, no optimal timeframe...in general I work real slow. I may come up with the main idea in a few hours, and then I let it be for months and then finish it some weekend. And sometimes it's somewhere between. It'd be way different if I was a professional composer; I love it that I can be lazy. Also I recognize that I have periods for sowing and reaping: during the former, I can start tons of ideas and songs and vibe out with ideas without pressure, but the latter is for when I need to finish an album, and that's more like work and feels more serious.
Hi Fanu sorry if I missed this but would you dip your break hits when the kick and snare layers hit?
Depends on the layers and the strength of them and the actual break.
Also, your mentioned in the video that the layer drum hits you used are already available on your Patreon? I can’t seem to find them 👀
Hi, check the kicks and snares sample downloads under the newly-created Sample collection – they can be downloaded there :) https://www.patreon.com/collection/586116
