Bonus Episode 251: Halo vs Call of Duty vs Tarkov: Whose Lore Actually Matters?
Raz reads the wiki. Jake plays the campaign every year and feels weird about it. So we finally sat down and worked out why video game lore grabs some people by the throat and slides right off everyone else — using Halo, Call of Duty, and Escape from Tarkov as the three test cases.
Halo treats lore as a load-bearing wall: 30+ novels, a book published before the first game, and a universe consistent enough that Raz would rather play it than Call of Duty even though he likes CoD's gameplay more. Call of Duty treats lore as an accident of twenty years of sequels — Captain Price has died and come back so many times that nothing in the story carries weight anymore, and Black Ops 7's timeline is a fever dream. Tarkov does the third thing entirely: environmental storytelling, item descriptions, a bloody key nobody explains, TerraGroup and the Contract Wars sitting underneath everything.
Along the way: why the multiverse trope is lazy writing, why Lost fell off and Breaking Bad didn't, Elden Ring and Miquella, the Labyrinth and Tagilla, whether cutscenes would ruin Tarkov, and a full defense of people who skip every cutscene in the game.
Jake wants to know why he's on this map. Raz wants the lore to be worth reading. Only one of them is getting what they want.
