The Incubus System Chapter 1548. Be Good
The Incubus System Chapter 1548. Be Good
I turned toward her. “Why?”
A faint redness immediately spread across her cheeks. She looked into her tea. “Nothing.”
I raised an eyebrow.
Emma remained stubbornly interested in her cup.
I waited.
Finally, she sighed. “I feel like…” Her fingers tightened slightly around the porcelain. “You need something more than sex.”
That made me go still.
She looked at me. “I know you, Ethan.”
My eyes moved over her face, searching for whatever had made her say it. “Are you worried about me?”
“No.” The answer came surprisingly quickly. Emma set her cup down. “I know your mind is already clear. I don't see the hesitation anymore,” she continued softly. “Or that dilemma you had before. You've decided what you want to do.”
She was right.
That part of me was settled.
Maybe the decision itself was dangerous.
But the fundamental choice wouldn't change.
Emma leaned closer. “But…” Her index finger touched the center of my chest. “I still need to do something about this.”
I looked down at her finger. Then back at her. “My heart?”
“Yes.”
“What?” I frowned slightly. “Do I look heartbroken or something?”
“Not really.”
That answer surprised me.
Emma's finger remained against my chest. “But I realized something after what happened at the villa near the beach.” Emma studied me carefully. “You looked confused afterward,” she said. “Like you'd lost your goal.”
I leaned back slightly. “Maybe.” That word came out more easily than I expected. I took another sip of tea before setting the cup down. “Maybe because I always thought my last problem was Zatan and Beel.”
Somewhere inside me, I'd genuinely believed defeating those two would close something.
Not everything. I wasn't naive enough to expect my life to suddenly become normal.
But I'd expected a boundary.
Instead, Zatan and Beel had torn open something much larger than themselves.
Dimensional instability.
The Light Dimension.
Ancient grudges.
Angels appearing in places they shouldn't be able to reach.
I winced. “And instead, those two assholes left me an even bigger problem.” My jaw tightened. “Ugh. I really want to torture them.”
Emma stared at me.
“Unfortunately, they're already dead.”
She huffed softly and shook her head. “See? That's what I'm talking about.”
“What?”
“That.”
Her finger pressed slightly harder against my chest.
I caught her hand before she could pull it away. “Don't blame me for that.”
“I know.”
“No, seriously.” My fingers curled around hers. “Do you know how frustrating it is when you're furious, you finally understand how much damage someone caused, and then you remember the main problem-makers are already dead?”
Emma's gaze softened.
“You can't do anything to them anymore.”
“Exactly.”
The anger wasn't overwhelming. That was perhaps what made it linger. There was nowhere to put it.
Zatan and Beel couldn't answer for anything else. I couldn't drag them back and demand they repair the cracks they'd helped create. I couldn't force them to explain every consequence.
The dead had escaped responsibility simply by being dead. And the living inherited the mess. Especially me.
Emma's fingers shifted within mine.
“You won,” she said. “But you never got peace from winning.”
I went quiet.
That was uncomfortably accurate.
I looked at our joined hands. Maybe that was what she'd noticed before I had. Victory had happened. Closure hadn't.
I rubbed my thumb slowly across her knuckles. “I suppose I expected more.”
“From winning?”
“From reaching the end.”
Emma leaned closer. “And there wasn't an end.”
“No,” I admitted. “But at least now I know what to do.”
That uncertainty had been worse than any enemy standing directly in front of me. An enemy could be fought. A threat could be measured. Even something stronger than me gave me a direction, survive, improve, find its weakness, protect everyone behind me.
But uncertainty?
That stayed inside my head.
Tonight, most of it had finally disappeared.
I leaned closer to Emma, letting my expression soften into something more deliberate as my eyes dropped briefly toward her lips.
“Like now,” I murmured. “I know exactly what I want.”
Her finger immediately pressed against my lips.
I stopped.
“Be good.”
I stared at her over that finger, then deliberately let my face fall into the saddest expression I could manage. “That’s cruel of you.”
Emma remained unmoved.
“At least let me seduce you a little.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“I’ll let you decide afterward,” I continued softly, catching her wrist but not moving her hand away. “No pressure. You can still tell me no.”
“No seduction.”
My shoulders sank. “Emma.”
“Now sleep.”
There was such calm certainty in her voice that I knew negotiation had officially died.
I huffed and released her wrist. “Fine.” I finished the remaining tea, letting the last warmth slide down my throat before placing the empty cup on the table.
I walked over to Emma's bed and slipped beneath the covers.
Then I closed my eyes.
And tried to sleep.
Key word: tried.
Because apparently removing all the political garbage from my mind had created room for another problem.
My incubus instincts.
Wonderful.
Once the anger, frustration, and endless calculations had quieted down, every other sensation became sharper. Emma's scent remained around me. The warmth of her room. The memory of her hands washing my shoulders. Her body close to mine beneath the shower.
And yes.
Seeing her naked hadn't helped.
At all.
I had already enjoyed more than enough intimacy tonight. Rationally, my body should have filed a formal request for rest.
But… Incubus biology apparently didn't believe in rationality.
The mattress shifted.
Emma had finally joined me. She slipped beneath the blanket and settled beside me. “Sleep, Ethan.”
“I’m trying.”
Silence returned.
For approximately several seconds.
Then Emma moved closer.
Her arm slipped around me from behind, and she pressed herself gently against my back.
My eyes opened immediately.
No. That wasn't a great idea. Not for my body.
Her warmth settled against me, soft and trusting, while her face rested near my shoulder.
I swallowed.
Emma apparently believed cuddling an incubus from behind after showering together counted as helping him sleep.
Beautiful theory.
Terrible execution.
Yet… I remained completely still.
