This was really cool. But boy I hope Cathay comes back soon. I'm such a sucker for Old World.
As always, a very enjoyable video to watch, thanks Herny! Regarding your question about oil paints: I bought some pre mixed oil washes from Scale 75 I think? And some odorless thinner. I only used them once very briefly. How do you dispose of the paint/wash that is left over? As well as the white spirits after cleaning out the brushes? My problem is not so much about using them more about the stuff around using them, if that makes sense. :D
this has come up quite a lot in comments. I'll address it in a future video. I use a piece of kitchen towel to soak up/clean up, then dispose of it in general waste.
Very enjoyable video and a great result; thanks Henry. I'm massively stoked by the idea that you might do more with oil paints, which I really want to get into. I recently tried painting a couple of minis with oils from start to finish, and as you say, both the use of pre-shading and the blending on larger areas were both an absolute dream. Things that were more difficult were: (1) managing contrast (the awesome blending power of oils also means that they can tend to pull towards the mid-tone in my very limited experience; it was almost 'pick a colour and then highlight with white only, coz mid tones will just make it all look the same'); (2) managing the back and forth between differing levels of paint thickness was a BIG challenge as someone used to acrylics (it's not nearly as easy as James Wappel makes it seem 😂) with the high variability of transparency and drying times across pigments adding even more difficulty; and (3) painting small details was Hell with oils. Any advice you have on these issues would be absolutely great. Also, please don't feel the need to apologise for being effusive/ positive in your videos - hobby happiness is always great to see and hear. Cheers!
nothing is as easy as Jim Wappel makes it seem!
The reason I subscribe and support is to learn and get inspired to try new techniques. This video certainly delivered on that. Thanks!!
Hell Yeah! Bit late in the day for me to watch, will watch it tomorrow when I am at work 😀
