WIP – Beastmen of the Blood Moon

Here’s a look at some progress on our Beastmen of the Blood Moon. As always, we’re sticking to our approach, treating these mutated raiders with a unique touch.

The details are coming together nicely, and we’re really pleased with the progress so far. The wild stance, mutation, and brutality we’re aiming to reflect are taking shape.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on how the progress is looking. What do you think of the level of detail? Any aspects you think we could improve or add?

They look great! Not a big fan of the helmets on the mongrels though. Keep up the good work!

I'm loving how these are shaping up! In terms of thought and ideas - perhaps incorporating the occasional bit of armour, banner or other detail from non-human armies. Even a bit of lizard scales would suggest they've fought against a few elves and lizardmen

I've always thought that somehow beastmen should look furry more so than a lot of the kind of smooth models out there. I'm wondering if in some areas the texture should be more exaggerated

I totally get what you’re saying — adding more fur can definitely give beastmen a wilder, more beastly look. However, one of the challenges with sculpting fur that can be painted is that it often obscures the underlying anatomy, which is really important in making the model feel dynamic and believable. For example, when you look at a wolf or any other animal, you can clearly see the shape and definition of its muscles — the fur adapts to the muscle structure, rather than just being a thick blanket of fur. If we give the fur the volume it needs to be properly painted (with washes, etc.), it often ends up flattening the musculature and making the model feel less defined and more featureless. A good comparison is with horses: the fur is rarely sculpted in great detail, apart from areas like the mane and legs. That’s because the muscle definition is what makes the horse look natural, and excessive fur would cover that. The same logic applies to beastmen — we aim to keep the anatomy clear while adding enough detail to suggest texture. In short, while fur can add character, it has to be sculpted in a way that still highlights the anatomy underneath. Hope that clears things up!
