Doctor Who 10x07 Edited
This episode went a bit differently to what I expected! I feel I expected more along the lines of the previous episode, and it was interesting being shown how wrong I was 馃槄
I hope you all enjoy 馃挏

Why didn't the Doctor just find something reflective and aim it at the window in such a way that Erica could see the reflected dial. Then just tell him what the current numbers are, and thus, he knows how much to spin it (even if he spins wrongly, she can tell him). There was a clear window between them. Surely, something reflective would work. Even his glasses...
I don鈥檛 know about the edited reaction, but in the full cut you talk about Bill鈥檚 love for the Doctor. I don鈥檛 believe she feels romantic love for him and I don鈥檛 believe it is even implied. From their dialog and interactions they obviously know each other much better now than they did in the first few episodes. Like many other companions, she has probably had many adventures with him at this point that we never saw. I feel she sees him as a wise mentor. A teacher. Someone who saw her potential. And on a psychological basis, considering what little we know of her background, we can surmise that she never had a strong, reliable adult male figure in her life growing up. No father. She is lesbian, so there is no sexual attraction. She loves him like a beloved teacher, a wise grandfather, a kind uncle. Loves him enough to feel protective of him, and to do anything to not see him suffer or die. I believe she does love him. Just, not THAT kind of love.
I mean I'd happily take an episode of Peter wondering around doing monologues playing guitar to be honest lol I understand the mixed reaction to the choice Bill makes at the end but I think I'd do the same, in this world without the Doctor the Earth is cooked lol So putting your trust in a fully healed Doctor defeating the Monks (essentially a second time) you'd be pretty confident about, so I'm with her on that. Also I think you're right regarding what love means in this situation, I don't think it means love like love love lol but more pure of heart and not out of fear and strategy like the others, her consent came from a place of love like you love your friend or in Bill's / Doctor's relationship like a grandfather figure.
The more I see of Peter, the more I think he's brilliant... I think we'd all buy tickets to see him on stage, just chilling and chatting 馃槄馃グ
i looooooooove that guitar intro with the spoken word. so spooky and atmospheric! reminds me of the monologue at the beginning of heaven sent. also, something i forget sometimes: the doctor was Bill鈥檚 mentor for a long time before she even saw the inside of the tardis! so many time jumps in that first episode, so much of their friendship was unseen. also random: peter wore almost this exact outfit when he sang take me out with franz ferdinand at glastonbury. red shirt + black jacket = fashion
OH Clare, you are so right! I don't think I realised just how long Bill had known the Doctor before their adventures started. Thank you for helping me understand!
When you talked last time about how happy you were that Bill seemed to be developing a relationship you probably didn't expect that the real date would be interrupted in a similar manner. I also really like Erica as the latest in a long line of popular guest characters who fans wished became a companion. The monks were effectively creepy and bizarre as well, very otherworldly. Unfortunately the ending made a lot of people dislike Bill as a companion, essentially selling out humanity for the sake of something the Doctor didn't even want her to do. Even aside from that, the whole situation at the lab seemed a bit nonsensical and contrived, not least the airlock that doesn't provide the safeguards that it should. You also pointed out that it was strange that they couldn't stop the venting. As good as the episode otherwise was they could have handled that much better.
I am so glad you agree with me about the lab part, Alice! I liked it, it was very dramatic, but for such a big company to not have any safeguards or any way of stopping the venting is a bit silly. I'm sad to hear this episode turned a lot of people away from Bill. I know a lot of people didn't like Clara as well. It makes me sad, for some reason... It feels like some people can be quick to judge and aren't really open to second chances once they've made up their minds 馃様
