Doctor Who 9x09 Sleep No More

Ooh a standalone episode! It feels like a while since we've had one. I've been loving the two parters, but it is nice to have a one and done sometimes, too.

This one was a bit creepy in places and I actually loved the ending. I think I've come up with some unique thoughts about the ending, so I'm curious if they match what anyone else thinks!

This is one of my fav seasons of doctor who for the direction alone, the shots are always so beautiful, so dark, and the camera angles, like you mentioned, are so creative !!

Not gonna lie this episode actually did give me a few sleepless nights, it also didn't help with the "Mr Sandman" song being in it, that song gives me the creeps lol

I'm with a lot of what Jason said - I like this episode but think it doesn't get the love because it's surrounded by all those awesome two parters and kinda gets lost in the middle, I really like the Doctor not getting it or finding an answer, I think you need one or two of those sprinkled in to a long running show like this. Not sure if it's intentional or not but there are different ways I think you could interpret how that guy made the video and all the intentions etc which again is fun to have because a lot of Who is very direct (not a bad thing) just in that the plot by the end is Ah ok I get it whereas this one a puzzler and keeps you thinking. REALLY like the last part though, when he's like melting away, it's so creepy I love it.

I love how experimental they were in this series, and how willing they were to take risks. This one didn't really land for me but it's absolutely worth it for the big risks they took in other episodes that paid off much better - at least for me.

I always think this one is underrated, its different for Who, it has a good twist (two of them in fact) and it does that rarest of all things- the Doctor doesnt win and doesnt work out what is going on and the monster of the week wins! My reading of it is very similar to your own, we are seeing selective edited footage of what actually happened, put together by an unreliable narrator to make a new story, I agree with your second explanation, the purpose is to make something that would keep people watching and so infect the viewer with the signal embedded in the footage, which is how the infection is actually done, the morbius sleep chambers are a red herring. This is not an episode of Who - thats why there is no intro titles as normal, its the actual footage transmitted to the solar sytem to infect everyone who watches it. Including all of us....

Your last paragraph creeped me out 👀 I love the thought that we were all happily sitting down to watch this episode, clueless about what doing so would mean! I really love the twist. It's clever and different!

I quite like this episode. Although the 'Blaire Witch' is quite old hat by now it's makes for an interesting episode for Doctor Who and I do like how it's shot and the twist about no cameras. As for the events, yes I think its the case that this happened and the Doctor and Clara was there but also a lot of it was set up just to produce this video. As the Doctor comments it's like it was all staged. But it does come in one of the strongest series, for me the only episode weaker than this one is The Woman who Lived.

I will agree that there have been fantastic episodes in this series so far, so this episode does sort of feel lacking BUT only because the others were so grand! I still very much enjoyed it, and the more I think about the twist.. It just gets creepier 👀

I always felt this is like a dream I would have after having been awake for far too long and finally dozing off, dreaming about not getting enough sleep. When I first watched the episode, I was almost certain that at the end of it somebody (the Doctor or Clara maybe) would wake up and it would be revealed as being just a dream, because it's a bit too surreal for me to accept that it actually happened that way. I simply refuse to accept this episode as canon.

A great example of Doctor Who trying something new. Unfortunately it doesn’t work to great effect but it proves this show can do anything really

And it's not afraid to try!

I had hoped that this would be the origin story of The Great Intelligence at the time. I think that could have worked. Sadly . . .

not one of my favorites but, as with every 12th doctor episode….there’s always rewatch value! i love the little snippets of shakespeare, sounds so at home in 12’s dialogue. have you found a way to watch the christmas special(s) yet? i’ve been waiting for you to get to the first one for as long as i’ve been subscribed, it’s my favorite. last chunk of season 9 just rocks!! keep up the great reactions

I think most people agree that this is the weakest episode of series 9. Funny that you should say about this being a standalone episode. The writer did pitch this as a two part story but Moffat decided against it as it was to similar to the base under water two parter from earlier this series. Now we have three episodes left of series 9 and... I genuinely can not wait to see what you make of them cause they contain some of my favourite 12th doctor moments in a series that's arguably my favourite new who series, alongside series 4 with 10 & Donna.

Believe it or not this is considered one of the show's worst episodes but even as someone who really isn't a horror person at all I've always liked it myself as an interesting idea with some very effective execution. It's odd to be watching just before going to bed, that's for sure, and I'm very much going to appreciate my hours of sleep.

Ooh watching before bed is risky haha! I've been checking for sleep in my eyes 😅 I really enjoy horror episodes with Doctor Who. I feel brave with the Doctor there as I know he always has a plan 💜

This is probably the weakest episode of S9 but I love how they filmed it, really unique and well done

I'd love to know if anyone had the same thoughts as I did as to the setup! I thought it was really unique as well.
