Doctor Who 9x10 Face The Raven YouTube Edit
It's at times like these I both love and hate my no spoilers policy 😅🫠
Did not expect this. In the slightest. It totally and undeniably caught me off guard. I know that when a lot of these 'big moments' happen, the UK press and media usually spoiled it back in the day but the benefit of watching it years later like I am (and also not following the UK press or the show) means that I am blissfully ignorant with no clue what is about to happen!
So yes... let's see what the next episode brings 🥹🥲

When the Doctor willingly and outwardly TELLS YOU that he is currently forsaking his name just run. As far away as you can get. The only thing holding him back here is Clara's final request.
Good insights on The Doctor's capability with death and grief that we all face more the older we get, and it almost always is effing shit and makes us so angry. I'd forgot a lot of good elements of this: aliens regarded as villains patching one another up; Ashilda's presence: its been a while. Not an episode I go back to often. Not a slight on its quality. It's really good at what it does. It's just difficult subject matter isn't it. Shocking but unexpected? Since the Doctor's regneration to 12 Clara has pushed and pushed risk, more after Danny. And as Rigsy remarked, she's enjoying it. It's her drug and high. The Doctor knew it and so guilt; it hits extra hard. Clara's death in this way feels like a natural end to that daredevil journey. When Jenna Coleman joined the cast I was blase about her. A lot of fans were negative about 'The Impossible Girl'. What a trip seeing her become one of New Who's best companions. "So yes... let's see what the next episode brings" Zippppppppppppppppppp! Bwahahahahahahahahaha!
I just found your channel recently and decided to subscribe to your Patreon for the end of this series. This whole series is what I consider to be the very best of Who. Unfortunately, like you said in your end-of-episode review, "he's going to suffer, isn't he?" is basically the tagline of NewWho. Very excited to see your reactions as this series wraps up. Love the compassion you show to all of the characters. You're killing it!
Thank you so much for your kind words 💜 I feel so bad for our Doctors... he's been through so much in his life. I guess when you live to be his age, you're bound to have been through some terrible times 😞
i cannot wait for the next episode
So I'm a few episodes behind, which is why you haven't seen me commenting recently, but when I realized today's drop was this episode I decided to jump right in because I knew there would tears. Oh I'm not talking about your tears Juliette, I'm taking about my own! I've seen this episode so many times and those final moment never stop making me cry. I really loved how Capaldi turns from ice cold to Mayor Me, then fatherly proud, with tears in his eyes for Clara. The range of emotion on ALL of them was actually stunning. Maisie Williams as Ashildr/Me was so strong and confident this whole episode, but we see her crack when she realizes she's lost control and Clara is hurt. Clara goes from "I got this" to realization, not to what's happening to her, but how the Doctor is going to react. And the Capaldi as the Doctor? Chefs kiss to his acting, even when he is saying nothing. Stunning. I know this isn't really the kind of episode you want fun facts for, but here it is anyway; the actor who plays Mr Rump was in the second episode of Doctor Who you watched. He was the blue "host' on the space station with Eccleston, Rose, and Cassandra.
I completely agree, this episode brings me to tears every time🥲🥲
I loved the ambition of this story -- it aims to make Clara's end a proper tragedy in the literary sense, meaning that end must come about as a direct consequence of a flaw in her character, namely the overconfidence and recklessness that has been growing during her time with the Doctor. There are some rough edges in the scripting, though: it's a bit too obvious that the long sequence with the man being executed for theft is there solely as exposition, to make sure we understand the raven's nature and power. (He's not even given a name, being credited only as "Chronolock Guy", so the attempted pathos at his fate falls rather flat.) More importantly, the plotting at the end is a little too arbitrary in the way the story strives to ensure that Clara has no way out. For rather vague reasons, she can't now pass the death-mark to someone else even if they volunteer, and neither can Ashildr remove it now that its original victim no longer has it, since the change in the raven's contract has somehow "cut [her] out of the deal." As seen in previous companion departure stories like "The Angels Take Manhattan", the Doctor is such a powerful and capable character that the show sometimes strains to find a believable way to permanently separate a companion from him. But if we go along with the story's contention that there is no other possible outcome, then Capaldi and Coleman shine in that amazing climactic scene. Part of the reason the ending is so powerful is Murray Gold's music -- I think his work on these final season 9 episodes must rank at or near the top of his entire time with the show. Apart from obvious (but beautifully done) touches like the wistful melody of Clara's theme making a couple of telling appearances in a quiet rendition for piano, I loved his treatment of the inexorable slow march that accompanies Clara's final moments and soars to a climax as the raven strikes her (mercifully covering her dying scream). Ingeniously, this theme had been introduced earlier in the scene (at the point where she finally accepts her fate and begins looking beyond her imminent demise, ordering the Doctor not to take revenge) in a subdued, half-speed version, thereby giving the whole long sequence a musical progression alongside the dramatic one. Also very fine is the last poignant harmonic change, as the music resolves to a moment of quiet peace over the final shot looking down at her body lying on the ground.
Great comments Steven
I watched this last week for the first time by myself as at the time of airing I missed a bunch of episodes and I have to say, I still cant believe it. It was so well acted and done. It made me reflect on future seasons I have seen and I think I have made a connection from something Clara said this episode to future things and its a bit of an eye opener. Capaldi's icy rage is fantastic here. You can really feel the loss he suffered here.
it's a brutal one, this one.
Clara's arc since Danny's death is really interesting now, the constant risk taking, refusing to slow down, becoming more like the Doctor, she never wanted to face his death and ran away like the Doctor from a painful past, and yeah, the look of continued disbelief on your face in the last third is valid lol And no one does anger and fury like Capaldi, that scene at the end with Me...ohhh boy, that was intense!
I do love an angry Doctor!!
Your shock and heartbreak really come through in this reaction. Thank you. The end scenes are so beautifully acted 💔.
It was truly unexpected, I really was in such a state of shock. A part of me still doesn't believe it... 😔
i think that ending goodbye scene is just one of the best-acted in the whole show, from the best pairing the show ever gave us (to me, at least). so much held back and unsaid, yet threatening to spill over. murray gold also wrote such a beautiful score for that scene. also peter capaldi has the kind of blue eyes that look red as hell when he cries, which i think makes for compelling viewing lol. "don't run....stay with me" gosh!!! whew we didn't get too many bloopers from the 12th doctor's time, but one notable one is from this episode and worth a watch for a giggle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3t-pRunxKM
Love this episode and the trap street kind of gave me "The Wolf Among Us" vibes even the guy that called Rigsy a murderer seemed very similar to Bigby but besides that though this is a very emotional episode definitely had the tissues out 😓
I thought there was a post-credit scene?
Indeed there is, right after the outro, but just before the next time trailer
No one would have dared spoiling something like this for you. It's part of the reason why I feel Clara should have left at the end of last season as originally planned as while still having her around worked well for some episodes, it beats being killed by a bird. Actually one thought I had while watching (which I can't believe I hadn't had before) is that the raven seems to operate in a somewhat similar way to the mummy from last season in there being that exact countdown to death and being able to phase and follow you anywhere.
I have heard that there were talks Clara was going to leave last season. I'd much rather have seen her get a nicer send off than her tragic death 😔 but I also love that she was so brave at the end, too. You are right with the similarities to the mummy! I didn't realise that. Nice catch 😺
Those gosh darn onions coming out of nowhere and hitting me again.......... What a episode
Those onions are potent this time of year 😭
Oh, Juliet, we have all been waiting for you to watch this episode. I am incredibly excited to watch your reaction and hear your thoughts on it though, and I am equally sorry you’ve had to experience this heartbreaking episode.
It was so unexpected. To the point where it still feels like it's not real. I've not lost many companions, and I don't think I'll ever be used to it 😔
Cannot wait for the next episode. I know a lot of people have been waiting for that one
I really hope you enjoy it!!
