Doctor Who 9x05 The Girl Who Died
I didn't expect this episode to be so emotional. I thought with the comedic elements (nicknames, Benny Hill) it would be a jaunty romp, but it really caught me by surprise.
The enemies reminded me of a primitive Cyberman, but anything stocky that clumps about heavily on two legs is always going to give me those reminders!
Before anyone says anything - I do recognise Ishilda ๐ I know I've not seen a lot of shows, and I indeed have not seen Game of Thrones but I recognise the actress.

Hi Juliette. This is somewhat trivial, but I watch the full version of your reactions. I used to be able to hit "Watch Now" in the email you send, which would bring me here, and then scroll down and find the full version. That is no longer the case. So now I come here, hit the "In Collection" link to the Dr. Who episodes, and then find it there. Any chance you could either go back to the old way, or else also include the link to the full version in the email, similar to the way you include the youtube edit link? Thanks! No problem if the reason is that you made the change is that it simplifies your workflow.
Ooh I am not sure why there is a change! Can you see the full version post on the patreon page or can you only see it in the collections? If so, that is a bit weird!
That bit where the Doctor tells Clara that one day the memory of her will hurt so much he won't be able to breath... that gets me. He knows right at that moment that he knows for certain that one day she will be gone, no matter what he does, and he dreads it.
I did catch it the first time I saw. It but the Dr took that chip out the the helmet and with the sonic he adjusted it to work on humans. So I guess he really didn't have access to it before. I really enjoy your reactions.๐
The great thing about this episode is that the first 2/3 of it completely misdirects you from the final third! A seemingly funny, easy going stand alone turns into quite something lol Love how they connected this to Pompeii, and also the idea that the effects of living that long isn't perhaps as glamorous as people may think. I think it's the first time he's come across that technology but he admits in the Tardis he made the decision to use it because of emotion over logic. Then to end it all your cat meowing when you asked who wants to live forever was purfect :p Your cat wants to live forever!
I love the evolution of the 12th Doctor's hugs.
One of the most underrated elements of 12
i love that they took a more poetic angle on the "he speaks baby" idea here, such a random concept brought back to great effect glad you enjoyed this one! fires of pompeii is such an interesting rewatch after seeing peter as the doctor also here we can see the 12th doctor's growth from season 8, being open and vulnerable with clara and telling her he straight-up can't bear to lose her. these two! <3 lofty's been at it hammer and tongs!! oh and here's the video of peter singing Take Me Out with franz ferdinand at glastonbury: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1KNCAgkpko
He has grown SO much. In many ways, I think his gruffness of season 8 was like a shield to protect him. He wasn't quite ready to be vulnerable again ๐
When Capaldi started as the Doctor they said they'd address in-universe why he happens to look like Caecilius and finally they've done so. He also had a role on Torchwood which has some connection as well but since I imagine you'll react to it at some point I can't say anything more about that. The Doctor doesn't have access to these devices. He does mention that he got them from the alien helmets so he may have only been able to get those two. He'd likely have been reluctant to use them anyway on someone with a normal human lifespan given what he's said in the past about the curse of just living as long as he does. He was just encouraged to do so this time because of his epiphany.
It's SO good they showed where he got his face! It makes sense, though... He's got to get these faces from somewhere ๐ฅน
I never knew that Maisie Williams (Ashildr) did an episode of Doctor Who! I've only ever seen her in Game of Thrones before now and it's actually kind of strange to see her play a role other than Arya Stark. (my favourite character in that show by the way). Would I like to be immortal? Hell no! That would end up being literal mental torture after a while I imagine. An enjoyable reaction as always Juliette. Thanks, and have yourself a lovely day ๐
Neil ๐ I hope you have a wonderful evening! I'm actually having next week off and am going to chillax for a while. No recording, no work, just enjoying a few days at home to breathe! I also think I wouldn't like to be immortal. I actually talked about that with my dad the other day. I mean, I wouldn't mind to be this age and in good health for an additional 10 years and then I can begin aging again. That sounds like a good deal ๐
Love the moment where 12 has his big revelation about why this incarnation chose that face and the dialogue that goes with it, also shows how much impact his companions and specifically Donna have helped him grow and show a human side .
