Doctor Who 9x01 The magician's apprentice

Wow, what a cool episode! An awesome introduction to series 9, and to end like THAT? Oh yeah, it started with a bang!

The whole premise of this storyline astounds me. I cannot begin to imagine how this is going to be resolved, and I love that they gave us so much we weren't expecting!

This is one of my favorite season opening episodes and it's great to have Julian Bleach back as Davros (also my favorite Davros episode).

The fact that Capaldi actually plays guitar and it was his idea to have the Doctor play guitar in the show is one of the reasons I really love him. This is such an intriguing intro, I love it. The Shadow Proclamation have only been seen once before, and it was Davros storyline! Nice one Moffat, he even got the same actor to come back.

Most of the Region A Blu Ray full series disc sets are inexpensive—around US $22 for most years. Not all but most. Not sure if that’s true for other regions but might be worth checking out.

Dr. Who may have been removed from the various streaming sites, but at least in the US all of "new who" is available to purchase by the season or by individual episodes on Amazon Prime. It just can be hard to find some things. For example it's easy to find the various normal season episodes, but the Christmas specials are "hidden" behind "The Power of the Doctor", which is a much later special episode, so try to avoid looking or reading too much, and actually, it wasn't even a Christmas special. But it has all the Christmas specials once you click on it, but again, the season numbers have nothing to do with the normal season numbers. You'd want "Season 4" for the Christmas special that followed Season 9, and "Season 5" for the Christmas special that came a year after that but there was no regular Dr. Who season between them. I have no idea if this stuff is available on Amazon Prime in Australia. If you can't find it any other way, I or someone else can probably send you a copy if necessary. Note that even the name of the upcoming Christmas special is a slight spoiler.

Useful info. I'm in Australia and there's no option to buy either seasons or individual episodes of Doctor Who here, or at least not as far as I can see. You can see a list of all the episodes though, and they are in a much more logical order than what you've listed. But then it just says they are 'This title is unavailable due to expired rights'

It's hard to hate Missy isn't it lol But yeah what a way to open the series! Fantastic episode. Loved the hand mines, great idea! Probably also been mentioned like 200 times as well but Peter is a musician so that was him playing the guitar, he's so cool and rock and roll!!

Who in the room is for the first time crushing on Peter Capaldi? And who is smitten with Missy and wishes they weren't? Unlimited rice pudding! A great moment from the 1988 classic, Rememberance of the Daleks. Skaro has a weird history. In an episode of the classic series we saw it destroyed. To the best of my knowledge the TV show has never been addressed how Skaro has come back, and I wish it did. Lots of great stuff in this episode: of course you were gonna luv it.

One thing I love about this episode is that they brought back the blue and silver daleks, they were the first daleks designs back in 1963 but unfortunately it was black and white back then

I love this 2-parter. The Doctor is clearly in a different state of mind to S8 and is very, very funny. He really appeals to my sense of humour. Missy is on fire, as always. And we get to explore more about the interactions with Davros. Both the classic episodes referencing previous incarnations of the Doctor here are excellent and have been voted as top 10 stories of all time. That's 'Genesis of the Daleks' with the 4th Doctor and 'Remembrance of the Daleks' with the 7th Doctor. They are both well worth watching, although difficult to get hold of in Australia, as they aren't on any of our streaming services. (I watched them on Daily Motion).

it took me a couple of times to realize he's playing a rock version of the doctor who theme during his entrance! such a great scene, so glad the real peter is finally returning to his rockstar roots in real life these days. and what a cliffhanger!!!!

You're in for a real treat this series (which is almost all multiparters). I rewatched it all at the weekend and it's probably one of the show's best seasons, at least for the revival. Just so you know there was a year's hiatus after this so you're not confused when you're reacting to 2 Christmas specials in a row ;) We certainly start off with a bang with Missy, Davros, Skaro... It's telling that even Missy got worried when she realised what planet they were on. I actually agree with her being annoyed that Davros was the Doctor's arch enemy as he's only appeared a fraction of the times the Master has and generally struggled to live up to his first story, from which that clip of the 4th Doctor talking about whether you could kill a child was taken. Last time that Missy showed up you said you weren't sure you were supposed to like her, which is why they had her kill Osgood to make sure the audience remembers she's still a villain. Here we see that in universe with her killing the UNIT agents to show Clara that she'd certainly not turned good. I do like it when Michelle Gomez emphasises her Scottish accent (she and Capaldi are both from Glasgow) on a word like that for effect. I'm glad you enjoyed the guitar playing. I think that was actually really Capaldi doing it as well as he was part of a punk rock band in his youth so he knows how to play and it's not the only time he gets to do it in the show.

Ooh I'm not up to that yet, but do you mean two christmas specials after series 9? I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment as the christmas specials aren't available to buy on youtube and I don't think they are on DVD. I might have to cross that bridge when I get there, or just come back to it when it comes back to streaming!

Loved your reaction to this and happy you enjoyed this episode. This is one of my favourite series of new who. No word of a lie this is one I've been looking forward for you to get to since I started watching your Dr who reactions. So I am so here for the next number of weeks to see how you feel as series 9 progresses. Missy, played by Michelle Gomez, is Scottish. As is our 12th Dr and also the show runner for this era, Steven Moffat. Which suits me being a Scot myself 😂😂😂 Side note I genuinely love this kinda outfit for 12. He really rocks the hoodie look. And now we start the process to wait for your reaction to the second episode of the series. I can't wait :)

Juliette | Gaming & Reaction · August 27, 2025

OH right, so Michelle is actually Scottish! Honestly, she's got so many accents I don't know which one is real HAHA I've really loved the more "casual" vibe of the 12 Doctor. He's been through so much in his life, he's in his comfy era. Can definitely relate 🤣

Fun fact: Peter Capaldi himself was actually playing guitar on the tank, not a stunt actor :) I think he's the cousin of Lewis Capaldi

J
Juliette | Gaming & Reaction · August 27, 2025

STOP! Is he really?! I've heard Lewis on the radio and love his songs haha

I love the throw back to the 4th doctor, the 4th doctor was on the brink of destroying the daleks but didn't feel that he had the right as they were (in a way) just born The baby hitler scenario but with daleks
