Doctor Who 8x12 Death in Heaven

We've reached the end of Series 8! Look, this just goes too quick... I didn't go into this series finale with too many nerves about losing our Doctor, I thought we might be pretty safe as it's just been two series so far - it's any further on from now that I am going to be concerned. I DO NOT KNOW when Peter's run is over, so please do not mention it! I prefer to be surprised, and devastated at the same time 🫠

A pretty sad episode, though I will say that I don't think there are too many people who are fans of Danny Pink. I like him, and think he is good for Clara, though I do think I'm in the minority with that one. He has a few positive qualities, such as his patience and forgiveness and I think this episode highlights his selflessness very well.

Missy was a hoot, though she's incredibly unstable and dangerous. Someone you cannot trust at all, but she does actually seem to like the Doctor? It's an odd relationship, that's for sure.

I loved the Santa Claus bit at the end. I was so emotional after the episode, and then we had this completely ludicrous scene with Santa of all people turning up and offering to try to help! Santa being on the case really was just what I needed to feel a bit better. :D

I never really disliked Danny Pink as a character, I just didn't care about him at all. It's as if the writers didn't seem to know what to do with him. After his introduction he was just there.

There's a YouTuber called John Smith (yes he robbed that from the Doctor) who made 3D renders/CGI videos etc of Doctor Who back in the day. He eventually was hired by the BBC to do some CGI for the show itself (that's how good he was) but his earlier stuff is also extremely good. He made a video which summed up the first decade of NuWho (2005-2015). If you want to watch it (in your own time of course), it lines up with the end of this episode and is very well made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvpfIjCi2bo

Juliette, I'm hoping you are not relying on a streaming service to watch these episodes, because as far as I know, they have been removed from all streaming platforms, although at least in the US if you are desperate, you can buy individual episodes, or whole seasons from Amazon Prime (being a prime member is not required for purchase of episodes). This may affect a lot of people who have not bought the episodes (e.g. DVD, BluRay, or purchased on a streaming service that also supports buying of individual episodes/seasons like Amazon Prime). Anyway, looking forward to the Christmas episode. It's one of my top 3 favorite Dr. Who Christmas specials, each of which are in my top 3 for different reasons. I think you'll love it (you've probably already watched it by now).

Okay - I love this Christmas Special too!! Unless it spoils any Juliette hasn't seen - what are your others? (My all time fave is A Christmas Carol, of course!)

This is one of the episodes I've been waiting for you to see, I enjoyed the Danny episodes and I can't wait to see your response to the Christmas episode.

I haven't been able to watch this or the last one because Doctor Who 2005 has been taken off Stan. Not sure when I'll be able to watch them which is a shame because I was looking forward to these two episodes the most lol. Hopefully we find out where Doctor Who 2005 will be streamed in Australia soon. I heard the BBC are in talks with Netflix, but it's also possible that Disney+ will get them. Either way, me watching these will need to wait a while. Guess it's something to look forward to whenever they make a decision 😊

Regards Missy's non-responsive guards, as Ive seen a few folk query why they do nothing, the mistake was leaving her alone with anyone. The Master has always been a master of hypnosis, in Classic and in NuWho. If you recall with the Simm Master he used the Ark Angel satellite network to amplify his hypnotic powers to get everyone to vote for him and believe his made up life story. The Time Lord, and the Masters' in particular hypnotic powers are not so directly referenced in NuWho as it was in classic but those two poor guards would not have stood a chance of resisting her hypnotic powers, especially as Time Lords are also low-level psychics.

As I mentioned in an earlier comment I'm not a big fan of this season but I do like this story and although Clara had got on my nerves with lying to Danny with her somehow having control of the Doctor, sometimes to the point of selfishness. (Her calling the Doctor and demanding he come and help her while he's on a crashing plane having just seen two people he care about killed) I do like how this episode opened with her pretending to be the Doctor and the fact they changed the title sequence so Jenna's name came before Peter's and her eyes appear in the titles instead of his. That was pretty cool. As for Missy, she was brilliant.

Missy is the best! Really enjoyed her acting in these episodes she’s great. I like Danny as well, I just think in Doctor Who you’ll get mixed reactions to everyone lol but maybe people didn’t like a ‘good guy’ character that rattled the Doctor? Maybe they wanted Clara’s BF to be more like Micky/Ricky 😂 But yeah I loved this two parter as well, really great concept, Missy and a really good ponder on the concept of the Doctor being a good man. Oh and that shot of Peter destroying the Tardis when he was furious over Missy lying about the coordinates was 🔥

ooh it's so interesting to see there's way more people here on patreon that like Danny compared to youtube! Most people seem to despise him there

so glad you got to see the caring side of the 12th doctor-one heck of a multifaceted character!!

Such a difference from the man we first met in Deep Breath! He definitely takes no nonsense (though he speaks a lot of it haha) and he has such a beautiful soul 💜

Danny is representative of what Clara needs, a normal human life doing normal things, in contrast with to what she desires in the chaos that surrounds her life with The Doctor, truly tragic what happens to Danny and Clara's relationship.

I will add, during episode two of this season, we have the scene of Danny in the classroom being asked if he had killed anyone by the kids, and there is a close up shot of his face with a tear coming from his eye, on hindsight I always thought this was a brilliant and subtle foreshadowing of his ultimate fate, something I think Moffat was quite fond of going back to Matt Smith's era.

When you were starting this season I rewatched a handful of episodes, as I sometimes do ahead of your reacting to them, and this and the last episode hit a bit differently for me than before because I had recently lost my grandfather and visited his grave for the first time, in fact yesterday (well, 2 days ago in Aussie time) marks 3 months since his funeral. As for the episode itself, I found it interesting that as far back as the caretaker you guessed that Missy was gathering an army of the dead, before there seemed to be anything sinister about her at all, but the one thing you didn't get was that it was an army for the Doctor, not to be used against him. Then again no one else but the Master would possibly do a thing like that and you had no idea until she spelt it out at the end of last episode. Looking at Deep Breath it's amusing that when the Doctor and Clara were arguing over who placed the advert in the paper they concluded that whoever was responsible was an "egomaniac, needy game player" and that sums up the Master perfectly. Missy's comment a few episodes ago about choosing well with Clara kind of revealed that she was the woman who gave Clara the Doctor's number, though this episode outright confirms it. It's interesting seeing what you wrote about Missy and how it seems to be a complicated relationship. I'm glad you're starting to see that now though it's even more complicated when you consider the differences between each Doctor and Master. Originally the Master was conceived as the Moriarty to the Doctor's Sherlock but arguably in modern Who Batman and the Joker is a good comparison, though maybe you could point to a few other hero and archenemy duos as well (some shades of Professor X and Magneto perhaps with their history?).

I will add that the reason why the Guards didn't do anything is probably because Missy/the Master is canonically a very capable telepathic hypnotist.

Juliette, have you ever had one of those days that has been so horrible & stressful, and the events of the day are just swimming around in your head as you replay them over and over? Well that's me right now. I'm really hoping that watching your Doctor Who reaction will help to take my mind off things 🤞 Thanks for the video Juliette and I hope you have a lovely day 💜

Juliette | Gaming & Reaction · August 13, 2025

Neil 🥺 are you okay? I really hope so. A good nights sleep and hopefully tomorrow is a brand new day and today's problems can very well sod off. I am always here if you need to talk or vent 💜

Looking forward to watching this! I love Danny. He is a helpful counterbalance to the Doctor - the stable and safe life that Clara ultimately rejects in favour of a dangerous life with The Doctor. He’s also just a good chap in his own right - perhaps not the sexiest thing in the world for an audience, but when this Doctor’s key question is often “Am I a good man?” - it’s nice to have Danny who is just a resounding “yes”.

Honestly, I am a fan of Danny, too! I've read so many comments on YT from people that seem to despise him. He honestly seemed great for Clara. He was so patient with her and had a heart of gold.
