Doctor Who 7x15 Day of the Doctor

Warning to those watching along for the first time: Look away when I do during the intro credits when you see Matt Smith's name come up!

WOW WOW WOW what an episode! SO FUNNY, emotional, wonderful, unexpected, epic.... This was an absolute treat. I feel like I've witnessed something beautiful and magical. My goodness. Does it get any better than this?!

What a wonderful reaction! So much fan service was expertly woven into this episode, both for those who have seen New-Who so far (doctors 8 thru 11) and for classic who fans. For me David Tennant's "I don't want to go" was amazing but for a different reason. I hated that line in his original regeneration, it came off as whiney and childish. For me this was a redo, and it came off perfect, and then Matt Smith "he always says that" tied the two together to make it all OK. For those interested, there is an awesome fan made video called "Gallifrey Stands" that I'll link to. It has SLIGHT spoilers that I'll mention in a non-spoilery way so you can decide whether to watch the video. It's an awesome remake of that culminating scene when all the doctors get together to rescue Gallifrey, but instead of tiny clips it uses extended clips and even has the doctors all talking to each other, and weaves in perfectly with the 50th anniversary plot. The slight SPOILER is that instead of just including the forehead of the upcoming 13th doctor, it includes extremely brief clips of a couple of upcoming doctors. So if you already know what the next couple of doctors look like I would say it's fine to watch but make your own decision before deciding whether to click. Here is the link to the fan made "Gallifrey Stands" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtM_vcCoKYc&list=PLC66s8eB6Y0XM9HexTp2gijkactTb1l-7&index=6 but please read the preceding paragraph that explains the slight spoiler that's in this video. Also if you stop at T=4:52 you can avoid even the slight spoilers about future doctors, ending on a fun clip from David Tennant!

This episode brings back fond memories. It was broadcast on the 50th anniversary of Dr Who and was on at the cinema here in the UK but that day also happened to be my daughters 16th birthday. She had a Dr Who themed birthday, with a Tardis cake which included my daugter as a girl made out of fondant coming out of the Tardis with the label The Impossible Girl. We ended the day with a trip to the cinema to watch this episode, with her and her friends dressed up as Dr Who characters. My daughter was David Tenant, but there was also a Christopher Eccleston, a Tom Baker, a Matt Smith and an Amy Pond who had the markings on her skin from how many times she had seen the Silence. And then the episode ends with a cameo from the actual Tom Baker who is my favourite Doctor. It was a perfect day

Great reaction as always and very much looking forward to tomorrow! Question, are you reacting to An Adventure in Space and Time before Time of the Doctor?

J
Juliette | Gaming & Reaction · May 21, 2025

I haven't watched Adventure yet, to be honest I'm not sure when is the right time. I also feel that I've not seen enough of Classic Who and maybe I should wait?

Thank you very much for your reaction, I really liked it! This is also my favorite episode, I would recommend a spoiler-free youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZAO6E2x9xs It's not even 3 minutes. Thank you for watching!

When Steven Moffat was asked in a Doctor Who Magazine interview to nominate his three "greatest triumphs" from his era, the second one he picked was this episode, and rightly so. For him to somehow cope with all the behind the scenes pressures and sky-high expectations of the 50th anniversary and ultimately deliver an episode that works so beautifully was an incredible feat. The first triumph he picked, by the way, was The Eleventh Hour -- the only episode that faced possibly even more pressure than the anniversary special, and succeeded brilliantly at immediately establishing Matt Smith as the Doctor. The third triumph is an episode you haven't reached yet... It's a less obvious choice than the other two, but I agree completely with Moffat's reasoning -- he called it the most difficult script he'd ever written, and you'll soon understand why when you see it. No spoilers, but I'm really looking forward to your reaction to that one... :-)

The tiny glimpse of Peter Capaldi as 12 (those eyebrows!) is the perfect tease for him

Would have loved 9 coming back so much instead of War, it would have really tied all of NuWho together. Christopher and Steven Moffat had lunch and discussed him returning but Christopher declined ultimately necessitating the creation of John Hurt’s Doctor.

What an excellent episode! The interactions between multiple incarnations of the Doctor were so much fun and even I, the most casual Doctor Who fan ever, could feel just how special this episode was.

Awesome reaction! To be honest over the past week I've been so excited to see your reaction to this! Now that it's finally here I had a wonderful time watching you react to it for the first time. <3 Also at 1:07:50 it shows Peter Capoldi the 12th doctor!!!! (you didn't seem to react to it so I didn't know if you noticed it or not so I thought I'd mention it)

“Does it get any better than this?” Nope. This is the best of the best, imo. Definitely my single favorite episode. Haven’t watched your reaction yet—never enough time! But I will in the next day or so. But… Not a ghost of Gallifrey chance I’ll be disappointed.

C
ColonelPants · May 15, 2025

I mean, depends on your definition of better I guess. Personally I think there's an episode in S9 (we all know the one) that's better. This is definitely S-tier Who though.

Love that you got to experience this without knowing Billie Piper or David Tennant were going to be in it, at the time of airing this was well known, in fact Matt Smith and DT did interviews on TV together! lol But still it's such an amazing episode, and like us all I'm sure one you'll rewatch 100 times more. It's just everything :)

Note the Doctor never went back to Elizabeth 1st after he promised he would. We finally get the answer as to why she was after him in The Shakespeare Code!

This is my favourite story of the new era and I'm so glad I got to see it in 3D in cinema's. Incidentally there were a couple of pre movie shorts shown just before it started so it's worth having a look at them as they are quite fun. Yes the titles at the start are the old ones and coal Hill School is also from that period. It may be worth watching the very first episode (not the whole story just episode one) if you haven't seen it already. I'm sure David did have a wonderful time during this as he always wanted to face the Zygons as they were his favourite monsters from when he watched as a child so he got his wish here. Eccleston was asked to return and did think about it but eventually turned it down so we ended up with the great John Hurt in place.

Gary Marshall · May 15, 2025

The theme tune at the beginning of the episode was indeed the original score which was composed by Ron Grainer, however he was not resposible for arranging it. That task fell to the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, a small team of musicians who were created songs and sounds electronically without the use of instruments. One of the team, Delia Derbyshire, was given the task of bringing Ron Grainer's theme to life and did so magnificently. Unfortunately, she never received the proper gratitude and her name never appeared in the credits...until this epsiode where her name rightly appears after Ron Grainer in the closing credits! Very much deserved!

When you googled the curator did you notice the 4th Doctor's classic outfit? He was wearing this absurd long scarf and Osgood as a Doctor fan wears it in honour of him. Really love all those nods to past Doctors. I think the original plan for this story was including the 9th Doctor instead of the War Doctor and that would have been even more beautiful in my opinion. But on the other hand, Christopher's refusal to come back (and Steven Moffat's plan to add an additional regeneration in the Doctor's past) gave us the fabulous John Hurt incorporation, so all's well that ends well...

Juliette | Gaming & Reaction · May 14, 2025

Ahhh I didn't notice, I shall look now! OHHH I SEE! That is very cute. I love that! A lot of those little nods are lost on me, but that's a really sweet tribute!!

The 50th Anniversary was a highly-anticipated reaction for sure, especially as it lived up to all the hype and expectation leading up to its broadcast. It was amazing to see how much you laughed, cried and everything else. I'm glad you avoided being spoilt by Ten returning, though returning Doctors are kind of a tradition for anniversaries as alluded to by River in a Good Man goes to War when she said that multiple Doctors was a whole different anniversary. John Hurt was amazing as the War Doctor, standing in for Eccleston not wanting to return (due to having a bad experience with bullying and stuff when filming the show, hence why he left so soon) but fulfilling his role well. It helps that he acts as a bit of a surrogate for fans of the old show and the criticisms they have of newer stuff like the kissing and 'timey wimey' catchphrases. The real treat for me was Tom Baker as the curator (implied to be a future Doctor going back to an old face), since he's surely the most iconic Doctor of all time regardless of who people's personal favourites are. I still remember my reaction to hearing his distinctive voice and realising he was about to appear. Osgood's long scarf is a recreation of the one his Doctor wore, and the Zygons were previously a one-off race from his era as well, (though they were referenced in an earlier Eleventh Doctor episode). Aside from having footage of all the Doctor's saving Gallifrey and lining up at the end with body doubles, I also loved how the credits of the episode listed all the Doctors and showed their faces. There's something special about a show like this that has such a rich history and legacy to pay tribute to, including recognising all those who came before like they did and reminding people that it didn't start with Nine and Rose, not by a long shot.

Alice, it was just so wonderful! It had such a perfect blend of humour, emotions and nostalgia. I adored how all three Doctors picked on each other so much - it was just so wonderfully done! I love that they respect EVERY part of Doctor Who's history. It's not just something they've buried because it's "too old". It's so rare that a show would celebrate so much of its history. It's just so well done!

I've really been looking forward to your reaction to this anniversary special and it did not disappoint. Cause I'm a bit like the doctor in that I've seen all these episodes before, multiple times, but getting to see someone else experience them for the first time is like getting to experience them for the first time myself as well. And that's fantastic. I remember watching your reaction to the end of time part 2 and how the 10th doctors regeneration broke you. Not gonna lie but I was crying alongside you cause of how much I knew you loved that version of the doctor but I was also excited for you to get to the 50th so you could have some more time with the 10th doctor. I saw this anniversary special in the Cinema in 3D cause it was released in a limited run to coincide with the television transmission date. And seeing this episode actually in 3D is one of the most amazing experiences. Anyway I can't wait for your reaction to the next episode which is the 2013 Christmas special and also another episode that I love seeing people react to.

I *love* that you can experience a "first time" feeling with these videos! That is just the best!! Honestly, saying goodbye to the 10th Doctor was heartbreaking. Seeing him again like this was so special - but he had to go and say that line again, didn't he 😭😭 It's such a beautiful episode! So well done!!

When the Timelords say that the High Council have plans of their own that is Rassilon and his plans for the ultimate sanction from the end of time parts 1+2 & in that episode they know that The Doctor possesses "The Moment" & name drop it (in the episode) that will kill Daleks & Timelords alike

I was lucky enough to see this in 3D at the cinema, it was fantastic. This episode achieved the Guinness World Record for the largest ever simulcast of a TV drama, shown simultaneously in 94 countries and concurrently in 3D cinemas. You should check out the cinema intros for this episode. https://youtu.be/dW1pYem8xNA?si=Z3a5F8jzQkHsi1t1

I remember being hyped up all year for this back in 2013, it didn't disappoint and still doesn't I love how they used the first doctors intro (my dad had to tell me that at the time) and the curator doctor was played by Tom Baker who was the 4th doctor and is considered one of the best doctors People will tell you a lot more details but I'm glad you enjoyed it, its always fun to watch first time reactions to the 50th anniversary

This is a bit of a long comment... When the War Doctor asks the 11th Doctor how old he is, 11 says "1200 and something, I think" to which the War Doctor replies "400 years older than me". This would make the War Doctor 800 years old. We then see the 800-year-old War Doctor regenerating into the 9th Doctor. What is strange is that when we first see the 9th Doctor in Rose's flat in Series 1, he looks at a mirror and says "Ah, could've been worse", implying that he has not yet seen what he looks like, so he would logically be fresh from regenerating. The 9th Doctor tells Rose later in Series 1 that he is 900 years old. So what happened to the missing 100 years? A lot of people had a popular theory that the 9th Doctor simply didn't look at his reflection for a whole 100 years due to the guilt of killing all the Time Lords/Daleks (or so he thought) and then met Rose 100 years after regenerating. But I think this episode gives a much better theory that also answers another question from Series 1. My theory is that when we first see the 9th Doctor in S1E1, he is indeed 800 years old. He has just regenerated from being the War Doctor. At the end of the first episode, he asks Rose to travel with him, and she rejects his offer. He then goes away but comes back a few seconds later and says, "Did I mention it also travels in time?". I believe those few seconds from when he left to when he comes back is when the 100-year gap takes place. He spent 100 years away and then came back seconds after he left. What this theory also helps to answer is all of the drawings/photographs Rose is shown of the 9th Doctor by Clive. If the 9th Doctor was truly fresh from regenerating and then immediately travelled with Rose until he became the 10th Doctor, then surely, all those drawings/photographs should also have Rose in them? Or at least some of them. She would be seeing the future 9th Doctor and her future self in the past. But she's not in any of them. This is because the Doctor in those drawings/photographs is the Doctor during those 100 years. It's the 9th Doctor before Rose started travelling with him. So, Rose is seeing a slightly future Doctor in the drawings/photographs from after he first goes away in the TARDIS when she rejects his offer.
