September update + Poll on releases

Hi all!
Wanted to give a little update before the month's end so people can decide what to do with their subs :) I'm still working on the game. Things are going quite well but still slow. I've added some cool features and I keep having to add more business departments to make business launch possible, so I added marketing and am now in the works of adding a finance department to add funds. I also improved the text message function with replies and images to some messages which really adds another layer of immersion and fun imho. I got carried away and wrote a fun new scene after. It happens.

It's taking very long and I understand patience is waning. So I have a question that I probably asked before, but as the community changes I want to check in. Would you guys prefer:

A - very sporadic (once or twice a year) big updates that are semi-polished like I'm trying now

B - More frequent developer builds that are possible janky

---

Option A allows me to really craft //my// vision of the game and present it, but option B allows for more community feedback at the cost of possible bugs and dead ends. I feel like option B would involve you guys more, but it would also lead to me being bombarded with feedback and bug reports :)

So let's put it to a vote! Any feedback or comments are very welcome as well.

Now that the survey has clearer results, could it be said that we will have more updates soon?

Not to sound like a dick, but I think more frequent updates would hold you more accountable. I’ve been following for several years now, and even if every other update is just bug fixes, that’s fine as long as it inspires you to keep trying

Think option A is best. Do you have a rough idea of when you might drop this update?

I'm hessitant on giving release dates, but I'm trying for november at the very latest for the 0.2 build. I still need some good hours to put into the business mechanics to get movie releases right and add proper money/subscriber calculations, add investors and loans, marketing mechanics, random events and things like that. I really want the main business to run smoothly before release.

why not both? early builds so we can give you feedback, and sporadic polished builds for everyone else(people who dont support through patreon). i would much rather have more updates even if its broken or unfinished.

Yeah, I used to do this for a while. Not sure why I stopped honestly. Guess the 50/50 vote is pretty clear that I should go back to that.

Slow and steady to win the race. Also did you see my dm ;)

I missed quite a few DMs for a while. I'll look for it!

I like the polished updates along with your monthly progress reports on here. Take your time and make it good in my opinion.

Then my preference is option A, although both have their advantages. I think having you give us journal updates enables you to keep us posted as well as excited for the next big update, you prevent us from ‘overplaying’ the game and get less excited for small features AND like you said, you can create your version, which is ultimately the goal. With these frequent journals, you can maybe ask for some opinions on certain dynamics or features, what our ideas are or what we’d prefer, whenever you are unsure about something. That way you can keep us involved a bit but ultimately keep it being /your/ version, which will keep you motivated better, I’d say.

That makes sense :) Thanks for the detailed feedback. I just get this guilt for how slow things are going, especially with the Patreon running and how much money I'm making off it. I feel like pushing more frequent updates would give people more feeling of getting their money's worth. I do like your viewpoint of people overplaying the game. I never thought of that. Option A makes updates more exciting for sure. That's good food for thought.

Goddamn, you guys voting 50/50 on the polls again :p That's no help!

So with these updates, you mean newly released and updated versions of the game, and not these journal updates about what you’ve been working on and how much, right?

H
Holly-Wood Games · September 27, 2024

Yes, I should've clarified that :) I mean more frequent actual game updates. Pretty much meaning I'd drop an update whenever I finish a feature.
