Hello my dears!
Today I wanted to share how I use AI to help create my wall textures—and some of the actual corrections behind the wall featured in this post.
I start with a reference image and ask ChatGPT to recreate the wall in 256 × 1280 px, in PNG format. I ask for continuity between the right and left edges, so that when the texture repeats, the wall connects naturally. This includes the grout lines around the tiles, which need to line up without gaps, cuts or unwanted strips.
That is where I begin. Then I look at the result and explain what needs correcting.
With the wall I’m sharing here, there were several unexpected changes along the way!
In the first version, the tiles were too large compared with the reference, so I asked ChatGPT to make them smaller.
In the second version, it removed the grout line along the right edge and replaced it with a narrow strip in the wall’s background colour. The grout had a beautiful vintage finish, and the lines between the other tiles were still correct. It was a subtle change in the image, but when the wall repeated inside the game, the error became very noticeable.
In the third version, ChatGPT corrected the grout line at the edge, but also added an unwanted grout line above the decorative tile border—the strip separating the upper wall from the tiled section. I had to ask it to remove that extra line.
In the fourth version, everything else was correct, but it added vertical lines to the decorative tile border and the skirting board without me asking. I then had to request another correction to remove them.
Sometimes, correcting one problem introduces a new one. That is why I check the whole image again after each change, including parts that were already right.
AI helps me turn a reference into a texture, but there is still a lot of checking and back-and-forth before the wall is ready. The finished image does not show all those little corrections—but they make a big difference when the wall is used in the game!
I hope you enjoyed this little look behind the scenes and the process behind this wall. 🤎
What did you think of this little look behind the scenes? Did you imagine this was how I created my wall textures? 🤎
