Before I started watching basketball a year and a half ago, I was always baffled by sport allegiances...I was the annoying anti-sports person asking "you know none of those players are from where they play, it's very dumb and arbitrary!" And when pressed, most men I bugged on the matter eventually say it's because it's their father's team and that was something they could bond over/talk about when they were otherwise not that close. I decided to be a Mavericks fan because I am from and live in Dallas and I really do feel like it's nice to know I can see a guy in a Mavs hat and have a point of conversation other than the weather. Or warch a game in any random bar and root with other folks and just be conversant in the local lore. And it is nice to talk about a sport with my Dad, he used to work across from Cuban's Broadcast.com office and so he's had all kinds of Mavsricks tea I never previously appreciated! So like you said, it's about connections, of all kinds. I also used to be a political news junkie and I just can't handle that stuff anymore so I have a nice new thing to follow obsessively but it is actually very low stakes with minimal impact on my real life. I have tried to pivot to being a Lukers fan but it is harder to be a fan for a team not in your city and I also like to root for underdogs and the Lakers never feel like one!
My dad used to work at a Dairy with vikings fan. My dad asked him what his connection with the vikings was so many times he almost fought him once. I like rooting for a team, but when guys get in fights over there teams is when it gets a little embarrasing. like the team is some extension of their own being. I've done the same thing with the clippers as you've done the Mavs. The Mavs are a way more endearing team though. Cippers are the Cost-Co of sports teams. Politcal news is a dark interest. It seems as though you fall into either side of the aisle and despise the other. I had to stop listening to choppo because they were so black pilled.
Maybe I'm ignorant but I always got the impression of school sports filling the local team hole? I'm not american so please feel free to correct me, the leagues feel like too big a brand to ever have a relegation system but that'd be very interesting.
I supposed you're right. I didn't really think of that. For my hometown people do talk about the sports teams a bit. good call, maybe because I'm a city mouse, I've lost touch with my fellow American. 🤔
