Playing a bad guy
Hello guys! Lately I'm looking at what I had done with Under Ashen Skies, my Silent Hill/Hellraiser solo RPG that's been stuck in development hell for over 2 years now. I was actually not far from completing it, and it's sitting at over 40K words right now so it's quite sizable. I think it's a very unique game, but pretty dark too. This is without a doubt the darkest thing I've ever written, and some parts can be disturbing. You can expect lots of body horror and psychological trauma, so if I ever actually finish it, it will have a huge disclaimer on it, this is clearly not for everyone. I will of course get a sensitivity editor to make sure I don't get into edgy-for-the-sake-of-being-edgy territory. I don't think I have, but it's best to have a professional look into it.
This brings me though to my question and dilemma: How open do you feel about playing a character that was once, to put it simply, a piece of shit? It's not a guaranteed thing, but most likely while you play the game you will recover memories of your character doings pretty terrible things, from murder to abuse. Your character has no recollection of having done any of these things, and the setting is twisted enough to give them the chance of believing those aren't their actual memories, but the question remains: would you be comfortable playing a character that was once a terrible human being, even if they no longer are and have no memory of what they did?
The idea of sin (not the Christian idea of sin, but a more elemental one), guilt, and redemption is at the core of Under Ashen Skies. Granted, it plays mostly as a dungeon crawler, but the background story and discovering who you were/are are the foundation of the game.

"Sin" is defined as "missing the mark." For example, "He who has sinned falls short of the glory of God", is a metaphorical shot at the target falling short. So these are some rough characters who don't measure up to society's expectations. Maybe the expectations themselves should be questioned. But also, they are pieces of shit.
Yeah that's the line of thinking I want people to have while playing. And of course, kill monsters and get cool loot, haha
