Power Availability
Hello guys! Here I am, with an unexpected poll! I need your help: As you know by now if you've read my last couple of posts, I'm working on a small, mystery project that I'll be revealing soon. For now though all you need to know is that one of its features is the ability to find and use spell-like abilities. These are categorized into 4 different types, and my initial idea was to allow players to collect all the "spells" they want, and have them as permanent parts of their repertoire. But now I'm thinking that it might be more fun to limit this, to let's say 2 "spells" per category. This means active "spells" though, the ones you can cast at will (as long as you have "mana" for it, of course). So you would maybe know 30 "spells", but only be able to use 8 at a time. It's kind of like spell slots I suppose, but without limiting how many times you can cast each one of them. The core mechanic of finding and learning new "spells" would be unchanged, you'd just have to choose beforehand which ones will be available for you for the day.
So what's more fun and better for the game, to have unlimited access to all your "spells", or to be forced to kind of create a build and choose which ones from your repertoire will be available to you until your next rest?

I like limitations, but not the way it was described with up to eight spells out of the ones you know, in that case rather unlimited. Preferably there should be a limitation how many spells you can learn to begin with.
Since they're technically not spells, it doesn't make sense, lore-wise to limit how many you can learn. What I want is to give players tons of options, and then it's up to them to decide what to do with them. By putting limits I hope to remove decision paralysis during combat, for example. You can always just rest and swap your active ones for others in your repertoire, so it shouldn't be that restrictive. Really appreciate the feedback!
Depends on the game world and setting if you ask me. High fantasy setting I say go for all the spells you want, if we're talking a more low fantasy setting then limiting can be helpful. For what its worth I prefer games that limit, typically
It's kind of in between, I suppose... High fantasy due to the characters' abilities, but the worldbuilding is kind of low fantasy.
