Q&A 28: A few short questions

John Smith asks:
"Just something I'm curious about: In a previous Q&A you mentioned that you had the opportunity to work on a few video games but it didn't fit into your schedule at the time. Are you at liberty to say what any of those games were?"

John, I am sorry to say that i can't remember what they were. They were narrative indie games from European studios. The people involved wanted my storytelling skills, and seemed very nice. Alas, I already have a full-time job working on my own stuff, so as much as I'd like to play in someone else's sandbox, it's not a very good idea in terms of my general wellbeing.

Pierpaolo Di Camillo wants to know:
"Any hope of seeing the Solvers-Steeple crossover someday? The thought of poor, older Mrs. Clovis in prison waiting for someone to discharge her makes me very sad."

I have some notes for this story already. There were plans for more issues of Steeple before the OGN series was cancelled at Dark Horse. But I hope to at least do this one. I was going through the later Steeple stories recently after a long time not thinking about those characters, and felt very positive about the work I did. It seems obvious to me, and I suspect you too, that only Lottie can unpick the disasters that came in Steeple #20. Though this time I think Glenn and Claire should help too. So I will probably have a go at writing this at some point in the autumn.

Alex Finch asks:
"Is there a mainstream US comics character that you'd like to write, and if so, what story would you like to tell?"

I think I did it with my X-Men story, and my Giant Days x Batman comic. The pleasure's more in writing and drawing those characters to fit my rules of what a comic should be, than satisfying the mainstream US comics industry, which is quite out of step with my reading taste and storytelling style. The pleasure I got out of drawing Wolverine and Kitty Pryde, over and over again, was not small. I thought a few years ago that I could do a good Spitfire & The Troubleshooters. That's a comic no one really cares about. But only for my own amusement, not for Marvel. Though when they were interested in me working for them, that's a title I asked about. The other thing I think I could turn up and just do is Superman. Which takes me onto the last of the short questions...

-----

KECG asks:
"Do you think the writers of the new Superman movie were referencing Bad Machinery when Lois referred to Mr Terrific's t-balls as 'circles'?"

I assume you are making a reference here to the cricket match in Giant Days #50 (below). I like to think that this could indeed be history's most oblique reference; I mean, it's not out of the realms of possibility. Calling any sports ball "the circle" is one of my more gnomic (and long-standing) bon mots. I don't think I stole it from anyone else.

Thank you for these questions! More answers... soon.

Susan may be channeling German coaching legend Sepp Herberger, who once explained football thus: "Das Runde muss in das Eckige", which roughly translates to "the round thing must go into the boxy thing", or "the circle must go in the rectangle".

I am well-chuffed at the news that a new Steeple story /may/ be in the offing.

Steeple has an incredibly strong core cast, I’m looking forward to the chance at more of them.

Thanks for the answer. I would love to see Claire and Glenn's reaction at the peculiar characters of Steeple. And knowing more of Mrs. Clovis' mysterious past, of course.

More Steeple is quite exciting. Hopefully the crossover idea gels when you get into developing it more, but either way I'm glad you're feeling good about the work you did with that series.

I would love to see a Solvers/Steeple crossover, I thoroughly enjoy(ed) both. Charlotte & Rev Penrose is the mystery solving duo of the future

I agree, Rosanna. But I'm very nervous about exposing poor Glenn to Billie and Maggie, let alone Brian and Magus Tom.

I thought your/Susan's explanation of cricket was excellent.

I believe that she settled the question of what cricket is about for at least the next twenty years.
